I read the Art of War, and in it he described a type of terrain he referred to as ... um, entangled? I think it was. It looked interesting. It's an area from which it is very beneficial to attack from, but it cannot be retreated back to.
Here's the idea in eve terms. A region of space which you cannot warp into, only to the edge of. Your speed inside this area would be greatly reduced. However, you *can* warp out of it. While you are in this area, no other person can see you (preferably in local as well). You can't be scanned, you can't be probed, nothing. However, you could scan and probe from the inside. Perhaps you could get a big bonus to probe times when you're inside also, to make it worthwhile.
This would mean that you could set up in a system which you expect your enemies to move through. Go to this area and push your way in. Then you wait. Once the enemy enters the system, they can't see you, but you can see them. Once you're ready, you warp to them and attack. Once you attack, though, you can't get back into that area in a reasonable time because you can't warp into it. This could be very bad, since the enemy may know about the area and be expecting such an attack. If you misjudge, you could be very dead. If you don't, you could take them totally by suprise and defeat a more powerful force.
The area itself can only be found by probes which will detect an anomoly of some type. If you warp to this anomoly, you get stopped 50km from it. From 20km to the interior of the anomoly, you'll show up on the overview as a warp target (but people will still be stopped at 20km from the anomoly). This border zone would also work as deadspace, plus a 50% speed penalty. Once you're inside the anomoly, you're no longer a warp target and you won't show up on scanners, probes or in local (that last would be nice). ---
