they look the same because they are generated from the same engine and process.
but i think people spend more time than is commonly thought making their avatar.
i also think that people then rarely revisit to adjust, because of internet spaceship time>eyebrow needs to be higher time.

I know a few people and their alts made just in this fashion. theyre all nearly alike or very similar
On that note i honestly think it comes down to personal taste as there's so much variety in avatars i can see some from different people looking alike though they are clearly separate people (well unless you have a split personality disorder... ) |

well generally ,for people who actively participate in discussions online in the forum apparently has an inclination to be more sociable and have a strong sense of individuality among them. So far, from the avartars of the people who are replying to this thread , I don't really see that much repetitions. HOWEVER , for miners , that is an entirely difference situation. Carebear alts are often only used as an isk bank , with no real emotional attachment or sentiment towards those toons beyond iskies iskies iskes . Its natural to see them look quite... Mine is simplistic because the engine for it is so damn demanding. It takes far less computer power to fly my ship into combat then it does for me to change my avatar's face or walk her around the captain's quarters. I can't do it without horrible lag.
Being that flying a spaceship is more important than me sitting through an hour of struggling with an inefficient face customizer, I chose to go simple. Titania Hrothgar |

I think you are probably right.
To many players it doesn't matter that much, but I think a lot of us realize that anything can happen in EvE and how your avatar looks may one day be much more important to us.
I didn't design Ranger 1 to be radically different from everyone else, I designed him to fit my image of what Ranger 1 should look like. Blunt and too the point, a somewhat military demeanor that simply doesn't have time or need for dishonesty.
He doesn't look (nor is played) remotely like any of my other characters. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

I find the hairstyles a bit disappointing compared to most of the other options. I wish that hair length would work on a slider much like most of the other values. Despite the options presented people tend to gravitate towards a few styles with some almost never chosen. The other disappointment is in the earring department which has so many options that are almost identical. I however think that the "sculpting" engine is fantastic.
As for facial designs, my characters from different bloodlines do tend to look like each other more so than others of the same race. Eye placement, nose width and length, cheek fullness, mouth size, ear size, brow prominence, jawline prominence, are factors in the players control. I have a few of these traits tweaked to one extreme (like super deep set eyes, or max nose length and overall delicate bone structure) across my characters. This is even before makeup, tattoos and scars are applied. This results in an image that is super customized to my slightly odd aesthetics which do stray from the "model norm." |

Because they lack any sense of individuality. It's all part of the garden variety "power gamer" psych profile. Helpless & weak in real life = obsessed with power & e-peen waving online. So naturally they all go for the maximum tough-guy image, get themselves a mohawk, slap on some cop shades, and the drown themselves in their own virtual machismo.

TBH I had this question bugging me.
Inagine a newb who creates their first toon. What does he have? A lot of scars, markings, some hairstyles, a bit of clothes and ability to sculpt facial traits (and well, body). A lot of this stuff doesn't offer much possible combination, given that some features are quite unpopular.
What should make character different is facial traits, but it takes time and dedication to sculpt a face. So why bother when CCP made quite a good premades? After all, there's a huge unexplored New Eden awaiting you... Well, actually the way you "shoot" your avatar afterwards also helps with making your toon distinguishable, you can do so much with that (not to say that instrument is bad, it's just limited by design).
I can't say that I don't care about avatars, but I pretty much felt into this trap. Oh well, screw that, I like mine.
Though some people really put an effort into their avatars. I must confess that I have a small collection of the most memorable ones I've seen on these boards. Keep up great job!

ok total, I have about 13?, maybe 14 avatars, none of them look alike, nor have I ever seen one elsewhere that made me say "damn, is that me?"
With the race based feature-set a person is likely to attain a similar look to someone else if doing nothing more that just using the random generation feature until they see one they like, or can live with.
Some folks (myself included) find the controls to customize a facial expression don't give me the result I'm looking for and generally make me end up looking like some weird partially aborted freak, or some mangled asylum escapee, so i use random until I reach and acceptable face and build upon that.
I'm sure that I'll find (at some point) an avatar that looks similar to this one, but i hope that doesn't happen for a while. Don't mistake fact for arrogance, supposition for fact, or disagreement for dismissal. Perception is unique in that it can be shared or be singular. Run with the pack if you wish, but think for yourself. A sandwich can be a great motivator. |

I find the possibilites of emotional expression to be rather huge and fulfilling. There's a lot of work to be put into the details ... just as to be expected, regarding facial expression.
Regarding your face i must say that you have a rather distinct one. Nice work. I think i actually know a person IRL that reminds me of you. Inappropriate signature removed. Spitfire |

Lazy! You are calling me lazy? You don't know how much effort it took to make the most archetypal looking Caldari officer. From start I had to restrict myself to only change Aging (to look more wise), scarring (to look older), Hair (nothing wrong with bald people, right?), Clothes (a giving), Lights (so you could se the EFFORT I put into this character).
You don't know how much effort it took to press "Next", "Next", "Next", "Next", "Take picture", "Finalize". |

Why? avatar is nothing more then a avatar it have no use in eve "yet". So people stick with the basic style. And its fine for me i just colour the hair make it little older but thats it. Take less then 10 min work on this one. If the made a avatar game inside eve perhaps i change it but for now its good. |

Actually I think the avatar modeler is pretty good, especially considering that we play a game that puts the focus not on our avatar but on the ships we fly. And this thread gives some good (and in part good looking ) examples of different faces. However, I also think that it could be better and hope that someday the modeler gets updated with more options.
Eyes, nose and lips are key defining facial features that are set by race and bloodline (among other less obvious things). It would be nice to have at least 3 different sets each for every bloodline or to have more and broader options to alter the facial features in general. And while weGÇÖre at it, I would like to have morphing sliders for all facial features (maybe at the left side of the screen) so that I could do incremental changes using numbers.
Hairstyle, beard and (for some maybe surprisingly) eyebrows also have a large impact on how we look like. When I started EVE and created my avatar, I was surprised that there werenGÇÖt a lot more options. The limitations in hairstyles and beards are probably one of the main reasons why many avatars look similar even despite having different origins. Among all the possible changes this should be very high if not on top of the list.
More patterns for eyeshadow and if possible metallic colors for eyeshadow and makeup in general, more (good looking) tattoos, tattoos on body parts other than the face, more clothing (including footwear, glasses and gadgets) and maybe hats and jewelry would be icing on the cake.
