Which artificial actors do peeps fancy as Hollywood's best? Which of the myriad mechanical marvels have dominated the screen and our minds? From the big budget to the made for TV, which robots, androids, cyborgs, computer AIs, weird alien things, blobs of goo and otherwise non-human characters do people think had a big impact, and why?

Best robot: Marvin the Paranoid Android.
Best computer: HAL 9000.
Incidentally, if you replace each of the letters in HAL with the next letter in the alphabet, you come up with an interesting result.

Holly from Red Dwarf is one. Marvin is pretty good, though I liked him better in the book.
I like the Marvin from the BBC version of Hitchhiker's--even though it was cheesy, he was FUNNY.
And its not hollywood, but IMO the tachikoma robots are the best robots ever . -- The best description of alliances, ever:

So many robots... HK 47, Holly from Red Dwarf, that gigolo robot from AI...
I think the one that wins would be Titanus, though. I know absolutely nothing about him/it, but the NAME man, the NAME! ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |

Most annoying in my book goes to the little robot in 'The Black Hole' with a texas (or someting similar) accent, his name was Tex or Bob or something like that.
Another big one is the computer Colossus in the movie 'Colossus - The Forbin Project', a new-built super computer in usa contacts a similar computer in Russia and they together start taking over the world. If nothing else it must have given inspiration to Skynet in the Terminator-movies.

the cylons from the original battlestar galactica series.
they are fast, mean, smart, and successful killing machines, and have a huge variety of ship maneuvers they can perform. also they do in no way resemble tin cans.
