Which artificial actors do peeps fancy as Hollywood's best? Which of the myriad mechanical marvels have dominated the screen and our minds? From the big budget to the made for TV, which robots, androids, cyborgs, computer AIs, weird alien things, blobs of goo and otherwise non-human characters do people think had a big impact, and why?

Best robot: Marvin the Paranoid Android.
Best computer: HAL 9000.
Incidentally, if you replace each of the letters in HAL with the next letter in the alphabet, you come up with an interesting result.

Holly from Red Dwarf is one. Marvin is pretty good, though I liked him better in the book.
I like the Marvin from the BBC version of Hitchhiker's--even though it was cheesy, he was FUNNY.
And its not hollywood, but IMO the tachikoma robots are the best robots ever . -- The best description of alliances, ever:

Most annoying in my book goes to the little robot in 'The Black Hole' with a texas (or someting similar) accent, his name was Tex or Bob or something like that.
Another big one is the computer Colossus in the movie 'Colossus - The Forbin Project', a new-built super computer in usa contacts a similar computer in Russia and they together start taking over the world. If nothing else it must have given inspiration to Skynet in the Terminator-movies.

One of the greatest scenes ever in GITS:SAC is where Batou comes into the room with the tachikomas, after they had been having somewhat of a philosophical discussion about things. Batou previously had been trying to convince the Major that the tachikomas were just fine, and that she shouldn't have them decomissioned. One tachikoma then walks up to him and gives him this interesting monologue about the essence of God and zero. Batou then gets this priceless "HUH?!" look on his face, and comments "Maybe you guys really ARE weird." -- Dark Shikari: POS Consultant!

Hah, that one is great too .
I love how GITS:SAC takes so many referances from movies and such. The entire story of the tachikomas is based off of Flowers for Algernon, and the major plot is partially (and quite obviously) based off of "The Catcher in the Rye." Great book, by the way. -- Dark Shikari: POS Consultant!
