I am currently debating the idea of purchasing Guild Wars for the PC. I have heard from some friends that it is actually worth the purchase. However, I'm still stuck and want more varied opinions :)
Anyone played it before? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- God is always on the side with the best artillery. |

Its cheap considering that you dont have to pay any fees after the initial purchase: its actually quite fun once you getby the levelling ------------------

I have a necromancer/elementalist but I'm having trouble with her I'm guessing that wasn't such a great combo? Or I just suck
(eh, to be on topic - online play is free which is a huge plus point, but it doesn't strictly speaking feel like an MMO, because most gameplay is restricted to either soloing or playing in a small group. You can meet ppl in towns, but there are a lot of regions the population are split into and they're mostly doing there own thing. Graphics are pretty. Oh yeah, you can doodle on the mini map )

The game is alot of fun and definately worth paying for, because of the lack of a monthly fee. I play the game alot with my corpmates when we are bored, and we all specialize in different professions to make our group more effective. I'm currently a level 14 Elementalist/Monk (a very popular combo), concentrating on Air/Water magic, for example.
I don't even really like "fantasy" games and I've found this game quite fun. The graphics are also quite good for an RPG, especially at 1280x960 with 4x AA

basically it;s a souped up version of Diablo II, with team play, a great pvp arena, and no monthly fee. Been playing a Warrior/Ranger and can solo a fair bit, but the rewards are much better when you gang up with other people (not npc's). Definately worth the price as there is no ongoing fees. -----------

I'm a Warrior/Monk, and finished the singleplayer experience.
It's a very very good game, but I also found it a bit short: if your in for the story/missions that is. Two weeks of play time and then you seen it all (visited all villages/completed all missions) .
Personally I didn't tried the PVP part that much, so can't comment on that |

Well I thought it was a waste of my fiances money. She bought it and was hyped about it. She was getting into it being the graphics do kick major ass just like eve's. It's just the fact that it's not really a MMO. You only interact with players when you enter a town. When you go out hunting it's totaly private. Which I guess is cool if you want to play against the PC and lone? The guild portion of the code is really pointless. It autoguilds all your alts to the same guild and it doesn't really mean much. I still havn't seen anyone post in my guild but there is like mad members. On top of that, they got there own cloaks with guild symbol on it that I can't ******* remove off my necromancer. Damn the world!
I played it for a couple of weeks and got bored. It's just quest after quest after quest to level you easy. They give all classes there own healing spells no matter what class you are. Talk about wanting to make sure all the losers dont die. Obviously speedy leveling, good sceeniery but boring as hell. I havn't touched the pvp portion, by the looks of the un-complex skill system. I rather not. So in my opinion and fiances. It's a waste of money. Go play Dark age of Camelot or Everquest. Get more out of it. Plus trade ...

aye i think its a pretty decent game. I play it as a kind of distraction when im a bit bored or burnt out on EVE. Have a lvl 20 w/n thats been through the game. Now training up a monk to see what its like. PVP looks fun. Only dabbled a little but its quite tactical and the battles can last for hours if the players are well matched in strategy and tactics.

Well worth getting, if you consider that even if you treat it as a purely single-player sorta game, you'll get about 30-50 hours out of it easily, which is the same or more than many offline PC titles, for the same cost. If you add to that the fact you can continue playing it with other characters, can join with other players, making it much more social and interactive, and have a pretty good PvP system, it's well worth it.
The PvE part is divided into storyline missions, and sub-quests in explorable areas. The missions are usually about an hour long, and difficulty progresses with your average character. All are designed for the max players in terms of difficulty, but I've managed a few with NPC henchman, though I prefer to just use henchman for explorable areas. They're AI has good and bad points. Great for combat, but useless for either sneaking or luring monsters.
The PvP is split into 4 *modes*. There's team competitions of 4v4, 8v8 and 8v8 Guilds only (ladder matches). There's also a random team thing where you enter alone and get put on a random team for 4v4, which is fun for some quick competition, but being random means you can occasionally get rubbish or amazing players, and very poor or brilliant team combinations.
The fact it's the price of a single player game but has a lot of multiplayer potential, with lots of things to suit different play styles and no monthly fees makes it a good investment. There's many updates to fix bugs, balancing and content which stream as you log in/play making it all but invisible. My favourite feature of the game, is the team play in PvE & PvP. With the balance between classes, and the almost infinite variations of professions and skills, each person on a team has a role to play, and it makes games that much more fun and exciting when you're a part of a team. In Eve many players solo play much of the time, as I have been for a long time, and it can get boring.
Unlike other MMOs, instanced missions/explorable areas cut down on spawn camping (also the social part but can't have it all) which is great, and loot is divided fairly amongst all party members, a pet peeve of mine in most online games where the first to get to something gets it all. Main greivances are when leaving and returning to explorable areas, and having to hack n slash through all the same monsters you spent ages killing before. Some areas just don't permit you to avoid a fight, and it can get tiresome. Also, there's no market like in Eve, which you apreciate so much more for the lack of it elsewhere. Finding great items and having lots of money means almost nothing, cos it's so difficult to sell anything (have to stand around spamming in trade channel is the best it gets), and buy anything of interest.
But summary, get it, there's no monthly fees, so once you've got it, you can choose to play as often or as little as you want, whenever you like. You can play how you want, with whom you choose and make of it what you will. Saves me from Eve burnout at any rate :)

Edited by: Seiryu on 25/06/2005 00:25:14 Necro/ranger is cool because you can work entirely at range and let the others be meet shields. In PvP the skill plauge sending is awesome against warriors because it turns their skills against them, and add poisoned arrows and life siphon.... ----True bravery is not lacking fear, but confronting it.----

I have an Ele/Monk @ 20, Necro/Ranger @ 16 and Mesmer/Warrior @ 17. I must say the first is a great combination of damage dealing and healing power. The second is trememndous fun with ranged attacks, a high lvl pet and hordes of mid-lvl minions doing my bidding! The last is quite a weird combination I mainly played to unlock skills for PvP, but is rapidly turning out to be a lot of fun, though in hindsight, I wouldn't play the combination again if I had know how hard it would be! |

I'd say Ranger/War is the best melee character in the game right now. Expertise for the win.. i'm stomping cookie cutter W/Mo's with mine.
Most fun element of the game to me is the endless character build options.
