I can't quite grasp why CCP's art team would take the Dominix model (oldest warship in circulation, and arguably one of the ugliest battleships in the game), the Opux Luxury Yacht (a ship that embodies prancing and pampering), and the Brutix (quite possibly the worst BC) and combine these three blobular hulls to create the Gallente Dreadnaught.
Sorry. That thing doesn't inspire fear. It inspires feelings of shame, and loathing for its obese curvature. It makes me want to go Grouper fishing just to murder something in nature with that level of uglyness.
If it were up to me, which it painfully isn't, I'd have the Gallente Dread model base itself off the sleeker designs of the Megathron, or Thorax. Maybe even something super-funky like a Tristan, because this lump-o-crap design is really starting to annoy. Why does this make perfect sense? Megathron and Thorax are kings of damage for their class, and to make its most devastating cousin look like something more suited to act as a carrier? Huk. :/
PS: I know about the lack of textures. Don't care. _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. "Can I be a consultant for EVE II?" - WhiteDwarf |

Yes, less Dominix more Megathron, please!
Just imagine what'd happen if you made a cross between Megathron and Gallente Shuttle! Scratch that, just blow the Gallente Shuttle up to 300 times size and change it's texture and you'll have a beautiful assault ship. Tech 2 Gallente Shuttle 4tw! --

I hate to agree but...
I do, After seeing the amarr one (which looks like it has a witches nose), I think the Minmatar Dread looks the coolest from the three I've seen (havent seen caldari yet) but the Gallente looks like a huge ugly blob.
over the last 2 years, I've grown to appreciate the Dominix, but both the Destroyer and Battlecruiser dont follow Gallente Fashion, and now, neither does the Dreadnaught.
Gallente design is sleek... sexy, smooth and symetrical, the most symetrical ships of all of the 4 main races (amarr a close second) the Destroyer is a single wing, the Brutix is an ugly frumpy looking ship, the Freighter is an american refridgerator, and now the dreadnaught looks like an over-weight bulk
Please oh please Mr Art Department, please give us gallente our sleek and sexy designs back

Edited by: Linavin on 25/06/2005 00:16:27 Edited by: Linavin on 25/06/2005 00:15:25 I personally had a laughing fit when I saw the screens. I agree that the gallent capital ships should stick to the sleek designs similar to the thorax, mega, and incusus and less the bloby like the dominix. Something slighly more similar in style to the gallente Titan
But overall for the dreds, I actually like the Minnie one the best so far.

It could be a lot better. They should add projections like the megathron has on its twin hulls in strategic locations to make it look sharp and intimidating.

I am hopelessly in love with the minnie one. It has, arguably, the greatest name of any ship in the game (Naglfar in nordic mythology. In short, it's the ship that will herald Ragnar÷k), and the fact that it looks so damn sinister make it just.. loveable.
I'm also not sure what is more scary, the ship that heralds certain impending doom or a ship that packs 4000ish millimeter howitzers.

I actually like the Amaar dread and the mimmi as well. But the G dread ::shudder:: horrible. True we've not seen the correct textures, but those textures will not change the shape, and the shape is bad. A spaceship banana split with guns, delicious! Reminds me of that rump ugly ship the Celestis. That ship looks like a someone was drunk and fiddling with clay while starring at a fruit bowl.
As for freighters, I actually do like the G one... kinda. Resembles a trendy flying office block or 50's era refrigerator but hardly sticks to standard G design conventions. Admittedly the G one has a charm about it, however; G ships are not sooo flying brick-ish. They should be long, sleek, and slightly non-symetical. And if not long, then thin and vertical like the vexor. Hell, even our industrials follow this design principal.
The Amarr and Caldari frieghters look very nice though and truth be told the freighters all (save the mimmi dread which looks great!) look to be better dread candidates than the dreads themselves. The only one that's a real toss-up is the Amarr ship dread and freighter as both look fantastic. I'd actually be happier if the G dreadie looked like the freighter more, at least it has a nostalgic style as opposed to the Dread's ice cream sunday theme. And if it were fitted with big turrents it would far better carry the image of a station killer than the current love boat tourist ship that is at large.
If the current design stays, ah well so be it. I'll accept it, but please I beg of you, do a far better job on the G carrier. We rule the land of drones. It is a dark and dangerous place so please give us a ship that reflects the true nature of that. Something textures depiciting open bay doors protected by glowing energy fields (thouroughly star warsy) and a wider, longer, slightly off center, and more G look. This is also your chance to make-up for that asthetic abomination, the Domi.
The Domi could've looked so much better, the back end is quite pleasing, but the brain tumor front.... what went wrong there? So much promise, but alas I still wan t one of the big brutes to support my drone fetish. Anyway, please don't give us a similar style in the carrier.

Actually, it makes perfect sense that the Dreadnought looks alot like the Dominix, they are of the same era (Caldari-Gallente War). Just take a look at the vessels described as "old" in the list of Gallente ships. The Velator and Dominix have brown colors and... molded shapes. The Dreadnought and the Titan are both old ships, they should not have the "new" sleek and shiny design that modern Gallente vessels have.
I can't wait to see proper texturing for this thing, the model is quite interesting and consistent with EVE history.

yup.
it goes past fugly and into kitch and then into so-fugly-its-cool and then wraps round back to fugly (but in a spiral) and keeps wrapping around and spiralling towards the dark centre, the abyss that stares back, the "ayyeeeee" fuglyness of having your cat drop a*****roach on your lap. and other mind-scarringly fugly things.
It is the one ship that i wont mind seeing ganked to death by ebil pieawts.
it'll probably win lots of battles simply because it will cause uncontrollable retching to most other pilots when you warp in -------------

I actually like the Amarr one, and the Minnie one. I refuse to pass judgement on a ship that isn't finished.
I would very much enjoy to see the people that are complaining so much about how they are "pig ugly" to offer a better alternative.
The Revelation is very pleasing to the eye, the Naglfar is somewhat reminiscent of the Pride of Hiigara, and while there may be the possibility that it could've been skinned better I love the general shape/style of it.

One of the things that attracts me to eve is the beautiful ship designs, teh fact that every faction has distinct design features both in colour tones and in shapes used.
Amarr - sleek, aerodynamic and shell-like in form, golden tones all round stunners usually >>>>> Amarr dreadnought, has a Quiff and is proportionally not in synch with the other ship classes.
Gallente - organic shapes, sleek is still the name of the game, but less so, the front of the ship is usually very distiguishable from the rear end, green organic tones >>>>> Gallente Dreadnought, amourphous blob with no clear lines ..
Minmatar - cluttered shapes, dark rusty tones, usually the least sleek ship designs but still imposing and have a sinister/imposing design criteria >>> Minmatar Dreadnought is aligned to the vertical axis, why? no other ship in the game has that characteristic, its proportions do not fit with any other minmatar ship .....
I guess I feel strongly about this.. im sorry.... I just love the ship designs in EVE they are the best designs I have seen in any game. I just see the latest designs for the dreadnoughts as a departure from that.....

Actually I'd say that each race has more than one distinctive look, I'll use Gallente as an example here since that is what the topic is about. There are three main types in my mind, and then cross variations for some ships.
1: sleek, agressive lines: Thorax, Megathron, Incursus.
2: retro, vintage lines: Exequeror, Freighter(love it)
3: bulky, are those lines?: Imicus, Dominix
There is more to it in the design philosophy obviously, I've never thought about it too much tbh. Vexor, Celestis, Brutix are crossovers in design in my mind. The Tristan and Maulus have some classic Gallente design traits (the tri-linear viewport, and the sweet protrusions of armor and engines), but don't fall into another category really.
Personally, for a dreadnought, I'd want to see either the sleek design ideal, or go all out with the Gallente traits seen in the Tristan and Maulus.... yes, I know there is a big size difference

I say again, it would be inconsistant if the ship had a MODERN GALLENTE design. It is an old warhorse, from the same era as the Dominix. The Thorax and most other ships are Post-war designs = not a likely candidate unless the Gallente dreadnaught was suddenly constructed just like that in very few years.
Personally, I think it looks mightly cool, it will be kickass if it has the same color scheme as the Dominix and Velator.
