How can this possibly be? I don't understand how you can play a game and not visit, post and talk on the forums. Are people just too lazy to care or do they just not know about them? It just baffles me. http://aclamthatrants.blogspot.com/ Read up on my adventures. |

I've done my time as a forum admin. The usual heuristic for a web site with forums is that for every person on the forum, there are 100 readers. The latter number varies quite a bit, actually. I've just heard 100 more often than the others.
So yes, this is almost always true, and it has been for about as long as there have been forums on the web. |

For every person like you, there are a few dozen who can't understand how busy people with jobs and families have time to play games and post on the forums. Then there area dozen who came to EVE through an external community, so the EVE forums have nothing for them that their external community doesn't already provide GÇö this includes small gaming clans as well as the obvious Something Awful and Reddit communities.
And I apologise for bringing a sensible opinion to the EVE forums.

Yeah... As said, usually less than 10% of forum readers ever significantly post. And those who bother to browse forums much are a minority as well. Over my time in MMO's, it turns out that researching or studying up on or really trying all that hard is a relatively hardcore, thin-air level of play. Lots of people kinda just coast along and just go with what is right in front of them without thinking too much. .... Frankly there is a reason WoW is so popular. |

The saying comes from a time when people were using bone needles; it probably should be upgraded.
As to the OP there are a lot of people that just come to forums to get some quick info and don't participate in the BS that usually takes place in most General Discussions. |

FTFY. These days I'd expect that most people will search YouTube for help or education before they'd look for pages of words.

I love forums, it's a very diverse community, and I usually get a smile or two out of reading topics, which makes it worth it to me.
Mind you it took me a few years of gaming to find and start regularly using game forums. Starting with questions and then moving further afield into broader discussions.
I imagine that timewise and gamewise it may not appeal to all. If you have kids and a regular teamspeak team, forums might be too much.
Then again it could be some people don't like peeking behind the curtain, they want to log in and be surprised by new updates or have to find things out themselves.
I think of forums as a vital part of any online game. But we are fairly new at it.
The point about only a small group uses the forums is interesting, I know it tempts game companies into thinking "small expendable minority, who don't act as they talk."
Gamers game, they play the existing rules. Which I think explains discrepancies between game action and forum words.
We still don't know much about social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Game Forums, personally I put the Game Forums ahead of Facebook and Twitter with respect to their respective games.

I know it's hard to believe, but for VAST majority of games (including MMOs), most players never even visit the forums unless they encounter a problem, which is usually not even gameplay-related.
Take me, for example. I never post anything on the forums of non-MMO games. Ever. I get the game, I play it for a while, and then quit it when I get bored with it. It's that simple. MMOs tend to be a larger time investment, so I post from time to time. But even so, there's been plenty of MMOs that I deemed beyond recovery and didn't really bother to comment on at all - abject failures that would never amount to anything, like Tera Online, for example.
Which is why I feel developers ought to pay attention to people who take the time and make the effort to communicate their views to the dev team. The big difference between your average forum poster and just some guy who plays the game and never even visits the forum is that with the former, you know where you stand as a developer. The latter simply drop out without a word, and you never find out what it was that made them quit. Sure, some MMOs have a little window on cancellation page asking why, but those are usually limited to 100 words or less and let's face it, almost nobody fills those out anyhow.
And which is also why it bothers me when people on the forum get labeled as the "vocal minority". Are they a vocal minority? Yeah, they are. But the only difference between them and the silent majority is that when silent majority leaves, they do so silently and you never get to find out why, you can only guess. Makes it damn difficult to improve your product in the right direction. |
