Norway, Gallente, Mercenery.
I liked the Gallente way of life, because its the closest to how the western part of the world lives today, and i love drones 'n blasters.
I could probably have chosen minmatar too, because i love the rag-tag factions in any fictive universe. They rock.

US/UK (Dual citizen, have bits of both cultures in me)
Chose Gallente. I think they just look better. Dietis look too much like Mr. Stereotypical Superhero, and the Civire are the in-the-trenches Americans.
I think if I had to pick again, I'd still pick Gallente.
I also found out later, and enjoyed the more liberal-democratic backstory for the Gallente.

I think if there's a pattern in how people chose their first character it will be based more on personality than nationality. Most people picked their character because of the race descriptions or the "look" of the character.

I'm a Japanese culture freak, to a certain extent. It could be argued that Caldari economics is similar to Japanese economics. Coming back to my old corporation from beta, I learned that I'd have to play Caldari if I wanted to join. Also, I just like the fact that they're all militaristic and in your face.

I started an Amarr character, but back in 'the day' Caldari were touted as 'the best' for PvP (remember when you were scared of scorps?) wierd how they're the NPC kings now & niche in PvP.

I chose him because I enjoy their slave backstory and I find it the most interesting of the four playable races. If Joves were in game, I might have chosen Jove.

I chose this character because i started playing at the same time as a load of mates, and I followed the sheep, falsly believing it really mattered that much,
To be honest tho, caldari are the best looking race in eve, if you like the whole "chin" thing.

Intriguing thread.
UK, Caldari.
Mind you, I chose Caldari for two reasons:
1) I liked the description of their background for RP reasons, and
2) I saw that missiles would be very effective and give the best 'bang per buck'.
...Wish I could go back and whisper in the ear of myself a year ago!

US - Amarr, all alts/accounts are Amarr.

why? because i dislike:
greedy capitalist neo-fascist police-states. (caldari)
bloated, arrogant empires paralyzed by traditions - and slavery. (amarr)
...
and minnie cause theyre ugly. and too agressive. 
and on the other hand i find inefficent democracies of ideological individualists rather amusing.
