I am looking for some input in to Research & Manufacturing. I've mainly been doing mission running, PI, mining and being a salvage slave for my master, but I am looking for a new semi-passive challenge.
I've read all the guides I can get my hands on, but it is still a bit of a jungle for me.
As for resources I have the ISK (and standing) to anchor a POS in high sec as well as access to raw materials through mining, mission loot and salvage.
I just don't know where to start.
Here's my plan:
1. Should I focus on BPC for my own manufacturing? If I do this, will I have spare research capacity at a small POS? 2. If I have spare slots, is Invention a good way to go or should I use them for BPC trading (long term research)? 3. Should I skip manuacturing all together and just copy/invent?
My goal is to have a decent income, at least to cover for POS expenses, while not having to be overly active.
Grateful for any constructive feedback :)
1. I don't fully understand what you're asking in the first part. Are you asking should you manufacture from your own BPO'/sBPC's? If that's what you're asking, it depends on what you're wanting to make. If you start with virgin BPO's, researching ME/PE on anything cruiser+ for ship hulls with even good ME researching skills will take you months to have your BPO's at competitive levels. Is it worth the time investment? Sure -- you'll be able to control your own flow. Otherwise, you'll always find amazingly researched BPC's at major trade hubs. It's just a question of time and how expensive the BPC's might run you that will inevitably cut in your margin. Moreover, bear in mind that BPO's can get very expensive -- so include that with your decision-making calculus.
2. You can make money either way. The best answer I can give you is do your research. Some T2 ships/modules cost more to make than sell (just like many t1 ships). On the other hand, you can find some good margins. They key thing you need to focus on for this question is realize this: it takes a lot more investment of time/resources to invent than to simply research me/pe and make copies. For invention, you need 3 specific skills to invent as well as datacores. Moreover, those 3 skills are heavily specialized and will only apply to certain commodities. Even more to consider, if you're wanting to invent t2 ships you're really going to need those skills to at least level 4 which will take you a month or so of training. And, finally, invention is completely chance-based. There is never a guarantee you'll ever invent anything. Sure, you can manipulate the invention environment, but it may not cost-efficient.
To highlight copying, if you're just starting out, it's never a bad idea to throw some BPO's in the copy oven while you further decide what you want to do. You can easily sell virgin (0 me/pe) BPC's in bulk for inventors. It's not the most lucrative way of making money, but making some money is more than making no money. I always try to have everything in my POS's running 24/7 no matter what. Your POS doesn't consume more or less fuel depending on the jobs its doing -- use that to your advantage.
3. It's up to you bud! Do you want to be the full chain or just a piece of it? Being the whole chain will require more skills, time, and effort. Doing the whole chain could let you discover which part of the chain is most lucrative in case you wanted to skip the whole chain and just focus on one part. The longer the chain = the more effort you'll need for importing/exporting components.
Good luck! |
