Right, I'm new to this game and, while I'm alright controlling my army dude, I suck majorly at the vehicles (especially the aircraft) and I'm looking for hints and tips.
I think part of my problem is that I tend to change the forward, back, left, right buttons from WDSA to the arrow keys. This is just force of habit from playing FPS games. However, the multitude of keys needed for BF2 has made me re-think this policy.
Are the default settings good enough or can anyone offer some advice?
I dunno if you can adjust these settings with an .ini file (Punkbuster may cry) or whether it needs doing ingame menus.

Tbh i like the default settings once you've learned where everything is and kicked the comps arse a few times take it online and own...
but there s a few parts of the game really bugging me... such as max 16 players per map on solo player.. so you can't play the 32 or 64 size maps
also NO bots can be added to lan games real downer

Well, my only annoyance is how crap the accuracy of your guns are with even the slightest movement. It almost becomes a race to see who can get prone quickest.

The defaults are prolly the best to use, with a few remappings here and there for heli/planes (to the joystick of course;) At least use the defaults till you get used to WASD rather than arrows (I'm amazed that people use these to play FPS games!) The only gripe I have with the defaults was the crouch key (left ctrl) I'll get around to changing it soon(TM) tho.
As for the accuracy, try changing to single shot rather than auto, the AK kicks ass and those prone guys always die quickly.
GL and see you in the field!?

I agree defaults are best - I kept crashing aircraft at first but after a bit of persistence it pays off - the controls are great.
And if people going prone annoys you, just run them over! ------------

Well, after a couple of hours with the defaults, I'm happy.
Gonna move the Prone (Z) key though.

I use:
Talk: capslock crouch: leftshift prone: leftalt
1 finger for all of it. You don't need a button for walking, just zoom in your gun.
I also recommend mapping dash to middle mouse button. Much easier and more responsive than double-tapping, and you don't spend a valuable button near WASD.
And get a joystick for flying. It'll pay off.

Here is a little advice that I learned the hard way I found that I would get wasted easy when the other guy went prone. I would say go prone when you are in a close fight in the assault role or support role otherwise run. Makes a big difference.
sprint-ctrl crouch-shift prone-Z, secondary prone key-F I inverted my controls for planes but kept choppers at default. *I love the Chinese sniper rifle you can go prone and auto fire on close enemies..very effective.
Josh it will boil down to what you are comfortable with. What I did was started my own server put a password on it and played around with flying the aircraft for about 4 hours. I've gotten good with choppers..planes are still a pain though.

I still have a problem with the buttons and i'm constantly swapping them around, I use caps lock for prone then sometimes hit left shift and vice versa.
For push to talk assign your middle mouse scroll button, (as you would on TS) makes things a hell of a lot easier.
Aircraft are easy when you know how, but even then the second you start thinking you are top gun/airwolf you will crash and burn, and burn very much.
For the helicopter hold W to build up lift, A and D to rotate left and right, the arrow keys to swing left, right but try to swing as little as possible except to change direction fast or navigate low to the ground. Dipping (up arrow) the chopper at an angle makes it move forward, pulling back makes it go backwards or level out with no thrust which will also make you hover. Always use the virual horizon line as a guide not the actual sceanary. Nothing really is automatic when flying the chopper except for hovering, so you have to constantly adjust your thrust (S to decrease) and keep changing your leveling and angle to avoid crashing.
If a enemy jet gets on your tail, drop real low and navigate around the hills and buildings they should loose lock or the missiles hit the ground. Only release your decoys at the last moment you think you will get hit (x button).
Transport choppers are harder to control than attack choppers, they are heavier, slower and the trust is awkward. To land the chopper, press S key to reduce collective, point down and gradually lift the nose, almost glide on the ground until you are touching, hold S and lift up a little. If you are already low to the ground, level up and hold S.
Try also being the second player in a attacker helicopter to fully appreciate how best to control one. You can also use fly-by-wire air to ground missiles (right click mouse, left click to shoot) or use the chain gun in this position. Being a good gunner though depends partly on having a good pilot who knows what he's doing and can control the chopper well to find you targets.
For the Jets. W to accerelate, tap W twice for afterburner. Down/up Arrow to lift and dive, left right arrows to rotate. A and D for left and right. Its easier to learn by flying the USMC VSTOL jets before flying the other types. They have great handling and can hover.
Some MEC and Chinese jets have a second space for a player to use guided missiles, you just need a good eye and timing, the result is satisfying.

maybe im missing something, but... can you invert the mouse for vehicles aswell? :P (moving mouse up = down, down = up)
i always used inverted mouse in FPS games, so when i jump into a vehicle and it turns back to normal (up=up, down=down) it just feels majorly fked up cause i have to adjust to it

Let me guess Josh - the people who say that are the ones you kill.
I hate anti-campers. But telling you not to camp in BF2 is more than a bit silly. ------------

I like being a medic in games.... is the medic profession effective or fun in this game?
Has anyone brought you back to life with a defibrillator? Can a Medic function in the battle without getting gunned down constantly?
Thoughts please.

Use the dune buggy to get around quickly. This means you can stop next to someone and auto-heal them.

Medic is my fav class, you can really rack up the points as one too, find a good spot where all the fighting is going on and dump a few med satchels behind the guys laying covering fire, hang back and heal people who com to you, and sprint for the revives, most people die near/behind cover so its quite easy to get to them.
Medics can really hold their own in a battle too, as long as you don't do a rambo! if you take a few hits, just heal yourself. obviously behind cover tho ;)

can someone who is dead wait forever for a revive.. or is there a timer?
And if you revive them does it still count as a death on their record?

There's a timer of 15 seconds for a medic to revive you.
Not sure about deaths counting if you're revived though.

I'm using a joystick for flying (choppers and planes)
Choppers rocks. You don't make many points, specially if you are flying a transport chopper, but is the most fun I've ever had in a game (not counting EVE of course)
Now flying a chopper is much more real than in DC or in BFV, flying low actually makes a difference (I've been flying 10 ft and less of the ground most of the time) , in order to make kills with the attack choppers you have to hover and hide behind stuff (so you don't get killed) Not to mention circle an enemy flag and let the guys on the Gatlings have some fun
I even got a "Flying ability point" while flying the Black Hawk yesterday

me = medic.
I always wanted to heal people in games but most people just think I'm *** for wanting to do that.
I was prolly the only one who got excited at the thought of logistic cruisers potentially being able to heal folks in battle when they first came out :/

Edited by: Joshua Foiritain on 01/07/2005 15:55:33 I use default settings, apart from the mouse sensitivity while in airplanes, i jacked that one way high to make ebil turns.
Also, i have no problem hitting stuff while jumping up and down, people who lie down or stop moving are easy kills. Assuming of course i didnt park my car in their face first, as thats the most interesting part of the entire game
Edit: Usually im an engineer to fix up my ride from hitting people, trees, walls and other cars.
