Could someone explain the point of this?
It looks "pretty" but I'm having a hard time understanding the point of spending time to code that as appposed to any number of things that would actually be usefull in EVE.
Or is this where we are in EVE's life? Getting excited over stuff that has zero useful fucntionality in the game. |

You're complaining about a bit of visual polish on a 3D game which could be functionally represented by a spreadsheet?
You're trolling. |

I'm complaining that this PARTICULAR visual polish has no functional use. It's not same as improving missile effects, turret effects, the way nebula are viewed.
I'm complaning that I'd rather see functional things getting coded as apposed to useless little visual features that have zero impact on the game as a whole.

It's funny you mention the nebula, because the background is one of those things which too is visual fluff and has little if any functional use from an in-game standpoint.
It's all about creating depth of feel, making the stars on the horizon actually appear to have meaning and context. You can actually see where you're going, rather than the dots in the sky just being some random part of a bitmap skybox.
Ship trails are another thing along the same lines, functionally they have very very little purpose, but they improve the feel of the game. The same could be said of all the visuals in game, we are after all simply dealing with spherical bounding boxes, right?
It's just a matter of depth and context.
It's also the kinda thing that a dev would probably knock-up over a lunch break. |

Like over 9000!
This is a cool little feature extending from the anchored context menu under the current location. This is a nice continuation to the visual and usability overhaul the game has needed for quite a while. Far from useless, it will reduce confusion for new players, while giving a bit of shiny to long-time players.
Further, it works better with a player's spatial relations, something the current map just doesn't do.
Now if we can just banish the five deep roll-over info pop-ups in the star map with something a bit more deliberate... (I'm talking about browsing station services in a particular star system, for example.) |

This I really like, it'll add nicely to the game's immersion.
Now I'm wondering if this isn't a little baby step towards a new navigation interface, one that would be fun to use with a touch screen - select star on screen, select Navigate To. |

very cool feature. given that the star field is "real", it would be interesting to have features related to that for fleet combat. imagine that you could drop a probe on certain star systems, and then "see" reds (or pirate targets) popping into and out of monitored systems just by looking around. or a fleet commander with the right skills/ship setup could use fleet mate scouts in the same way, and get the intel on rough number of enemy/friendly troop movements by just panning the screen around. right click in space to set destination for the system where your scout just picked up a hotdrop.
an option to perma-show the local constellation links would give you an instant "feel" for where you are on the map. Add in friendly jump bridge connections and you could have more informed and mobile pvp. nothing that cant be done already via regular chat channels/voice comms, only WAY faster and not as subject to accents :)
i picture it as something tony stark would design into his HUD. |

The nebulae are an existing part of the "world". It's our trees if you will. Updating them makes perfect sense.
I've never seen anyone ask for this. I've never seen CCP talk about doing this.
And I personally do not see how this makes space more "immersive". No one ever said, give us lines in space that connnect stars so that I can feel more immersed.
It's not that big a deal to me to be honest. IF CCP is saying this is something that took one guy like an hour or two to code in his spare time. But if this is something someone spent a week working on, I'm sorry, but that's rediculous.
CCP said modular PoS's turned out to be "to hard", station exploration got shelved, and for all we know WiS is never going to happen.
But thank god we got lines in space.

Hi there,
I first got the idea for this when I was orienting the star gates to point to the actual stars, a long time ago. This was a pet project that I did in a few evenings in my spare time. My hope was to bring more depth to the background and a sense of direction when traveling long distances.
I am glad you like it. To those who don't see the point: I guess I should have done something else in my spare time :) CCP Mannapi - EVE Graphics Programmer - Team TriLambda |
