Interesting for those who aren't afk while autopiloting.
I believe it's CCPs intention to make the universe seem real and more than just a pretty background picture.
It still doesn't help in the slightest in regards to navigation. Trolling is like art. Anyone can finger paint, but it takes true talent to create a masterpiece. |

Yup, certainly highlights the fact that many of the stars you're looking at out there are actually places you can go!

I thought you were talking about seeing the route in the map and was very confused as to why someone would think people haven't noticed it.
I was wrong DUST514 isn't on PC because CCP wants 2 different communities influencing each other, not people tabbing out to give themselves Orbital Strikes. (Also they don't want to cannibalise their existing playerbase) |

But that's probably not the answer you were looking for: no, the current Tranquility client doesn't have the funky menu for route manipulation, nor the trail of light through the stars. Day 0 advice for new players: Day 0 Advice for New Players |

It was shortly after they made the instant zoom out maps, while fun it became too much overhead I think having the 'map' constantly loaded at all times.

Just re-installed SISI on my PC to check this feature out and... confirmed... it is absolutely awesome! A few comments and observations:
- The displayed route runs from the next system on your route, to about the 9th or 10th system on your route, after which it becomes too difficult to see.
- It would be nice if the route started at the centre of the outgate in your own system
- It immediately makes you want to reach out and right click on one of the points so you can edit your route without going to the map screen.
- It'd be awesome if you could highlight a solar system, constellation or region in space with a special navigation overlay or something.
In other words... this is an amazing feature because it really opens a lot of doors to new ways to get immersion from the game, people will DEFINITELY be wanting more of this eye candy to make them feel like they're really in a galaxy and not just some random textured skybox. Kick Heim... MATE |

The slightly brighter stars in the background correspond to other stars in the region, I believe, but the fainter ones are static background objects.

Awesome. But it lacks system names. I think stars on route must be clickable and must show their names under mouse cursor.
To extend and make it really-really awesome, I suggest making 3-dimensional spherical star map. Current 3d starmap is just awful. Observer (i.e. camera) should be in the center of spherical sky - as it is for real sky map (see Celestia). OpenSUSE 12.2, wine 1.5 |

I'm complaining that this PARTICULAR visual polish has no functional use. It's not same as improving missile effects, turret effects, the way nebula are viewed.
I'm complaning that I'd rather see functional things getting coded as apposed to useless little visual features that have zero impact on the game as a whole.

It's funny you mention the nebula, because the background is one of those things which too is visual fluff and has little if any functional use from an in-game standpoint.
It's all about creating depth of feel, making the stars on the horizon actually appear to have meaning and context. You can actually see where you're going, rather than the dots in the sky just being some random part of a bitmap skybox.
Ship trails are another thing along the same lines, functionally they have very very little purpose, but they improve the feel of the game. The same could be said of all the visuals in game, we are after all simply dealing with spherical bounding boxes, right?
It's just a matter of depth and context.
It's also the kinda thing that a dev would probably knock-up over a lunch break. |

Like over 9000!
This is a cool little feature extending from the anchored context menu under the current location. This is a nice continuation to the visual and usability overhaul the game has needed for quite a while. Far from useless, it will reduce confusion for new players, while giving a bit of shiny to long-time players.
Further, it works better with a player's spatial relations, something the current map just doesn't do.
Now if we can just banish the five deep roll-over info pop-ups in the star map with something a bit more deliberate... (I'm talking about browsing station services in a particular star system, for example.) |

very cool feature. given that the star field is "real", it would be interesting to have features related to that for fleet combat. imagine that you could drop a probe on certain star systems, and then "see" reds (or pirate targets) popping into and out of monitored systems just by looking around. or a fleet commander with the right skills/ship setup could use fleet mate scouts in the same way, and get the intel on rough number of enemy/friendly troop movements by just panning the screen around. right click in space to set destination for the system where your scout just picked up a hotdrop.
an option to perma-show the local constellation links would give you an instant "feel" for where you are on the map. Add in friendly jump bridge connections and you could have more informed and mobile pvp. nothing that cant be done already via regular chat channels/voice comms, only WAY faster and not as subject to accents :)
i picture it as something tony stark would design into his HUD. |

I am glad you like it. To those who don't see the point: I guess I should have done something else in my spare time :) Burn so hard all you people who cried out saying CCP wasted time on this. |

awesome project, please bribe your team owner/boss/whatever that you can expand on it in your work time, there is a lot of potential for additional map functionality that could be tied into that overlay and be presented in a much (much !!) better way than they currently are We are recruiting german-speaking PVP players, contact me :)

Screw the haters. Little things like this that make the game more immersive and that fact that you guys put so much time into the player base and game are reasons why I love being part of it.

It looks "pretty" but I'm having a hard time understanding the point of spending time to code that as appposed to any number of things that would actually be usefull in EVE.
Or is this where we are in EVE's life? Getting excited over stuff that has zero useful fucntionality in the game. Your argument is invalid It is because all the POSsys you ever built are UGLY. You will have to improve a lot young man before we can talk about POS revamp...

Everyone jumped on me for being critical.
Guys, THIS is what I would expect to happen when I see stuff like this. It's one thing when it's something a dev undertakes because they love their game and are willing to do things on THEIR time.
I don't see a point in CCP saying "you guys do this, instead of doing this stuff over here that we always complain about not have time, resources, ability to do."
As a subscribing player I feel I have every right to express my opinion over what CCP allocates resources to.
I apologize if I wasn't very clear originaly. I didn't mean any disrespect to CCP Mannapi; he did a fantastic job, it looks good.
Goodness, you'd think I was critisizing the players. |

This idea is incredible.
It may not seem like much; after all, many others have pointed to the fact that it's a small, "nonfunctional" addition to the game.
Well, technically they are right in their own way, but I like to think about how all of these little things come together to make a world of difference, ESPECIALLY brilliant ideas like this one.
I love seeing stuff like this put into games, and I absolutely ADORE the fact that this was mainly done as a "pet project in spare time." It's the little things like that that keep me playing EVE Online. (also most notably the passion shown by the devs)
Kudos to a great idea, keep up the good work CCP.
(by the way I also love the new expansion ) |

What an unpleasant comment. I think that this feature is amazing - and I think it IS the sort of thing that CCP should be doing. The fact you only now approve of this because you found out CCP Mannapi did this in his free time - but wouldn't have approved of it if it was a CCP directive to produce this content is weird. It's either good content or bad content. And it is amazingly good content. |

The nebula with little stars is, but there are those "cross lens flare stars" that are brighter, and I think they are actually in the place of the "true" stars on the starmap. I think there is independent mechanism for showing those "true" stars. Inside mining barge, true story |

This is so awesome, CCP please spent next year on polishing autopilot and add more shiny thing, because we need this, also ignore totaly tech moons, pos, broken sov etc, who care about them, make stars more shiny.
Ps. Would be cool to get somthing like paint in game so we can draw lanes and links betwen stars and draw new awesome zodiac. EvE isn't game, its style of living. |
