Ok, list the books, movies and TV series you believe are the closest to EVE's stories, but more so its style and atmosphere...

Ian Bank's books are pretty close, though personally I hate 'em. ---
So, what was that you fed me? Battery acid, mostly. That must be why I feel charged up! Ho ho! Actually, you'll just die. ...oh. |

The new series of battlestar galactica(2003) - real good.
The Nights Dawn trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton. Real good books.

The Gap Series by Stephen Donaldson - has alot of the same ingredients - pirates, miners, police, politics & implants. Only the aliens are truely alien in the Gap series unlike the Jove who have just played a little too long with their DNA.

yeah i wish battleship fights would look like battlestar galatica instead of 30s episodes in which fights are decided :(

Edited by: Gunstar Zero on 29/06/2005 21:26:04 Night's Dawn would appear to be a big inspiration.
Reality Dysfunction was published in 1996, apparently the same year Eve was conceived.
Hellmar *SO* came in to work one day after reading it and said "Hang on Lads, I've got a great idea" in an Icelandic Charlie Crocker type style.

Oveur, I believe, mentioned Immortel the other day as movie most like EVE, hold the egyptian pantheon.
Otherwise Wing Commander would be something if you can see past the acting and stick to watching the scenography.

I would highy recommed Firefly (you can read about it HERE) (and the upcoming film version of it, Serenity) You can pick up the series DVD boxset fairly cheap at Amazon.
Also, 'Space Above and Beyond' was very good while it lasted.

'Pitch Black' movie sci-fi horror continues the tradition of 'Alien'.Not similar to gameplay but the story well and trully could be placed in the EvE universe.

From a role play feel i agree that Firefly would be a good comparison. The moment i started reading about the different ships, the offensive and electronic weaponry and the fighting styles I immediatly thought of the David Webber books set in the Honor Harrington Universe.

Personally I do not like FireFly - though its the same spec team as BSG. The story in FireFly is to thin aka. a hill billy Han Solo.

Personally I think the "Honor Harrington" series of books by David Weber is extremely close to this kind of space fiction.
Also William Dietz "Legion of the Damned" series is very close as well.
If I think of any more I'll post 'em.

Weber writes decent starship ****.
In particular his collaborations with Steve White are the closest to Eve battles Ive read. These would be Insurrection, Crusade, In Death Ground and The Shiva Option.
The Honor books are ok*, but because of how the drive physics work in that series, the battles are quite a bit different. Cool missile battles though.

* Ok for starship ****. Not great fiction. Iain Banks is better fiction.

Have to say the Banks books do smack a lot of EVE's universe. Especially his latest offering 'The Algebraist' it includes jump gates and a final revelation that might be good to include in EVE, but I wont say what it is here due to some poor soul may be reading the book and it would spoil it
