With the eve server being down 12hrs are we getting a free day?
Only reason i ask is best part of all day will be taken up and mostlikely the server will be unstable in the evening what with people downloading the patch etc.

I'd consider the day's loss as "paying" for the expansion of the game. Even if everything goes horribly wrong and the server's down for 3 days, 3 days subs is still a lot cheaper than the boxed expansion pack other MMO's would have turned this into.

I would just like to point out that the expansion is not free CCP are in business to make profit if only to invest it in another great game.
I am willing to accept the lengthy down time for new content though. I will not complain if its down for more than 12hrs as this is an acceptable amout of time for a patch with this amount of content.

there is only 1 reason CCP have to give a extra day.. that's if there for some unknown reason that the clusters where unable to be activated for the following day or even 2-3 days.. for a prewarned patch day CCP dont have to give a extra day.. we just have to prepair it with long skill trainings (that i am always happy to know that they continue to train even with Patch day )

Every other one makes an expansion and then lets you buy that expansion while still paying the monthly fee.
so yes this expansion is free.
Btw if you don't like it just quit, EvE will be better off without you anyway

I believe this is based on how rich a company is, or maybe how "respectful". Blizzard released many many patches with lots of content (Battle Grounds, Honor System...honor my ass, more skills, tweaks, blah) and when down time did occur they gave everyone a free day. I got a total of 5 days free already off them while playing WoW. I don't think we should except the same from CCP though it's not like they have 2 million subscribers giving them endless piles of money to burn.
I don't realy care, it just prevents me from being a carebear for another day =P And as for the dumb fools who are saying "they could release everything as expansions" no they can't. It's not feasble and it's stupid. Many people would infact leave the game (hell I would) and if the exapnsions came out as CDs instead of online orders they would be wasting even MORE money not to mention the fact that these boards will then be filled with "OMFGBBQ WTF WTF I HAVE TO PAY FOR CONTENT?!" topics. Now shut up, both sides are right in this topic but using the idea of they could make us pay is really frickin' stupid.

Sorry, there has been a slight mistake, everyone but Avon is entitled to their opinion. 
Anyways, while CCP has sometimes reimbursed for server problems, they won't for patches. And I agree with a lot of people here, they could just do like other games and make one expansion every 6 months with some free small fixes in between, or they can do it like they do today. And I admit, I've quit playing several games when I saw that their plan was to spit out a expansion every X months.

Dude they could just add new content into new sections of the galaxy that are open only for people who pay extra. Other MMO's are doing it I dont see why CCP couldn't do it.
For example they could have implemented the entire EXODUS patch into a part of spce only accesible to people who buy teh expansion. But they didnt. They are handing out free expansions and I for one won't be grumbling about my lost 12 hrs.

For the record im happy theres a new patch but i dont really regard it as "free" since i pay a subscription, again some "other" games do which i cant say i agree with which is why i play eve .

Almost all MMORPG's, when they release a new expansion like this - they will have 12-24 hours of downtime, and will charge $30 or so for it.
And people complain that we only have to put up with 12 hours of downtime, because they aren't happy about losing something they paid about $0.3 for.
Pretty pathetic imo, but still.

No, you are correct, nothing is free. Your subscription does pay for the patches, expansions etc.
When people say it's a free patch/expansion they mean you don't have to pay extra for it.

If you think:
UO has had at least 5 expansions, each costing roughly half of the original game, in addition to any monthly fee. If you think then, that anyone still running the original version, cannot access 4/5's of the game now without having spent upwards of ú100 extra. I think now, they even stop earlier, unexpanded, versions of the client connecting at all to the game.
Guild Wars, I know is 'free', but I am damn sure I read somewhere in the small print that they still reserve the right to charge for future expansion.
I am in the dark about other MMOG's, such as EQ, WoW, and MXO.
So yeah, CCP charging effectively 17p's worth of downtime for new content works out quite well indeed. And if you think you are paying for this through your subscription, you are probably right. But bear in mind that that fee is on-par with other MMOG's, and that you are getting a whole bunch of bugfixes included.

If we where to make a poll on how many subscribers are happy with the idea of a free expansion for the price of 12h dt i think u would be in the minority that didnt want it so.....
Myself im happy to sacrifice way more then 12h of game time for a free expansion, keep up the good work CCP and hope u will have a problem free deployment.

Yes, you are a dumb fork seeing as how you think I'm a dead amoeba with an IQ that is non-existant in terms of living organisms (zero) the IQ of a dead organism cannot be measured because...well..they're dead =P
Maybe, just maybe, I'm actually the great amoeba man with fingers typing this message right now making a gooey filled mess on my keyboard.
And yes, I do represent the majority of the player base. Whenever my friends quit something, eventually I quit as well, and vise versa. This is simply because we're all casual players not willing to spend A. a million hours to reach half of a level cap B. $900 to be able to play with other players in certain areas.
