After installing the last patch, I had to reinstall the entire Eve client to get the patch to work. While this wasn't a huge inconvenience, it did result in all my bookmark folders being deleted, leaving all my BMs unorganised! Having learned the hard way, I would strongly recommend the following:
Invest in a number of Small Standard Containers to leave in your hanger. Name each container after each of your BM folders, and drag a copy of the BMs from your People & Places folder into the relevant can. This way, if the worst should happen, you'll still have all your BMs organised which can simply be dragged back from the cans into People & Places after you get Eve up and running again.
If any other players have any handy hints for patch time, it would be nice if you could post them here, especially for some of the newer players. Thankyou

Set a skill that will take at least 24 hours to complete up and running, maybe longer.

Instead of moving all yoru BMs to tins, you could just take the lazy way out and copy your cache folder. This way you get to keep all your settings when you reinstall as well, which is nice. --------------------------------

Or even easier go to C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache and copy the settings folder. If you have to reinstall then copy this backup of the settings folder back to the new installation.

Helpful hint: Stay off Eve on patch day if you value your ships\pods\anything you are silly enough to carry in your hold during the lag and bug hurricane. So simple even a troll could understand it.

funny you should mention it, but if you make a route from Yulai->Amarr in NWO, it will always pick a route through a 0.4, even though there's a perfectly safe route through rens. -------------

As David Goodwill and hellraiser 2 have already pointed out, copying the cache\Settings directory is always a good move, even if there isn't a patch it's a good idea to make regular backups of this directory, the "read" state of your EVE-Mails is also stored there.
If your HD has enough free space you might also consider doing a full copy of the entire EVE directory just incase you get a CRC error (or something similar) which completely messes up the game. You then have the option to copy your backup over the top of the original and start again.
I have always download the patch and install it manually, this has saved me from auto-patching problems at least twice.
And, as others have also said, don't expect it to be up on time, get a longer skill going, and learn the new mechanics before risking your most valuable ship(s).
Also, during the downtime while the patch is being applied to the server, you could always try and get onto the test server (Sisi) and test the new stuff and weapon profiles there. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Patchday is usually a day you can make alot of isk.
There are usually some new BPO's added, some new skills and so on, pick one you know everyone will want, buy 10 at base price and wait.
9 times out of 10 some too rich for their own good players buy out the whole stock and try to make their isk back from overpricing day 1.
For some reason people just HAVE to have the skills/bp's modules... day 1, they simply cant wait till day 2 and get it for the basic price :)
