Only 17,000 players logged in right now. When I logged in 30mins ago there were only 8,000. These are really low numbers. Looking at DOTLAN for my local area shows extremely low numbers for traffic and gate activations region wide. Forget about getting a fight, it's an event when I even lay eyes on a potential target.
What gives? Is EVE really dead this time? |

uumm okay it is monday, means most people probably at work , like me or in school except for down under and the americas ( they still have to wake up)
as far i know it isn't even a special day, no catholic holyday, no national day anywhere

Funnily enough, Mondays commonly compete with Saturdays for having the second highest peak users in the week (Sundays being the winner by a large margin unless something special happens).

I think the login time in the OP coincided with what was supposed to be the middle of the extended downtime today for disk array maintenance (that was cancelled). So the numbers for today probably aren't too shocking. Peak numbers still seem a lot lower than before.
edit: nm, misread extended was supposed to end a few minutes before OP's post, so yeah just after downtime. |

Lol! you post not long after the servers come up after downtime on a monday shortly after an extended downtime assuming low number = game dead? un-bloody-believable, paranoia at it's worst. |

Apart from what everyone else has just pointed out, there are people who are taking a break from Eve to meddle with games like Skyrim, Battlefield 3 and a few other big titles just launched. In about weeks' time, when people are bored of playing those games, sanity will prvail and they will return to Eve. Skyrim is single player only. Imagine the fun with that........

I myself set up my skills and then decided to take a break for Skyrim, I imagine that many others are doing the same.
Skyrim is a pretty big deal and I am sure that we will see the players come back in time, perhaps when that new game feeling wears off.

Indeed, current EVE numbers will be low for probably the next 3-4 weeks. Then numbers will slowly grow until the for-sure release date of the expansion, which will probably see a huge resurgence in numbers. |

Personally, I am only playing Dark Souls and will be playing Skyrim after, but yes, there are a ton of 'blockbuster' hits out. Not to mention the forthcoming Assassin's Creed III and Skyward Sword.
It would be interesting to know how many and which of these Capsuleers mostly play, if any. I always had the feeling that most that played EVE were not into recycled formulaic FPSs.

Well there was an emergency, but CCP managed just in time to rush in the Flatline Intervention Specialists (better known as FiS) which has now breathed new life into the game. 
Nex (Cash Shop)-á/ Aurum - removing sand from the sandbox since Incarna.
Currently the only use for aurum is to buy virtual items in the in-game store, but Cockerill expects to expand its uses in the future. |

First off...when the OP started this thread it was a Thursday...not exactly a peak day for EvE. Secondly...Skyrim. Yes...Skyrim came out Friday and all weekend my thought process was...**** EvE, Skyrim. Secondly. Battlefield 3. For the past 2 weeks prior to Skyrim it's been nothing but BF3 for me. Lastly...Star Wars beta keys went out to a lot of people over the weekend. Next weekend its an open beta.
My point is...a lot of big name games came out this month. This is why EvE is in a slump in terms of log in's. Happens every year around this time. Nothing unusual. Personally I take a break from EvE for about a month a year while I catch up on other games. Keeps me from burning out entirely. I always come back...everybody always comes back to EvE.
