When medical necessity meets religious edict, there's usually* a quiet discussion in the back halls amongst the Holy, and a workaround or rationalization is found.
*Christian Scientists being a notable exception. Even some of the Jehovah's Witnesses have made some compromises in regards to blood transfusions.

I don't think it's productive to really 'go where this is going', and it's neither funny nor 'cute'.
Find me the stem cell references and bans in the Bible or Quran. America is the only country to go from barbarism to decadence (and back to barbarism - KI) without civilization in between. - Oscar Wilde - 1870's |

I can't give you a ban on stem cells in the bible or Qur'an but I can provide you with prohibition of pork in Judaism and Islam, which is obviously what he was referring to.

Depending on the source of the stem cells, or maybe even disregarding the source, the Jehova's Witnesses are going to have some problems with this - their ban on 'consumption of blood' is Biblically-based and widely held, although some segments of the Jehovah's community have found rationalizations of interpretations that will allow some types of blood transfusion. You can expect this technology to hit similar roadblocks and questions within that community.
That being the case, it is not unreasonable to presume or anticipate that some of the more strictly-interpretive groups within Judaism and Islam will also have issues with this technology. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

This is less of a blood issue and more of a organ transplant issue, which JW's have always held as an individual choice. Vote for Malcanis for CSM8

1. Get ultra-high-DPI inkjet printer. 2. Modify colour inkjet cartridges to work with organic materials.
3. Grow extracellular matrix component soups (EMCS). 4. Load ECMSs and water-soluble support substrate into cartridge. 5. Get hi-res scans of typical organ scaffolds. 6. Print a copy of that organ scaffold ! 7. Rinse out support material.
8. Harvest target patient stem cell 9. Grow stem cell soup (SCS). 10. Set in nutrientrich stem cell soup and wait for it to become a functional organ.
11. PROFIT !!! And also, potentially endless body youth.
:)
1 and 2 have been done, but probably not at a high enough resolution (but that can be improved on). 3 through 7 could be expensive at first, but can you say mass production and economies of scale ? Step 5 might be a bit tricky. 8 through 10 is what those guys in the OP's article are doing. Step 11 is what we want, right ? http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/User:Akita_T T2 BPO poll: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=114789 Buying this: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=147098 |

Actually, many billions have been thrown at spinal cord injuries. It's just an extremely difficult problem to solve. Biology is... resistant to your normal physics-based research methods. There is no standard 'human.' There is no standard model which accurately represents a sufficiently large percentage of the population, either. Living biology has a very rude habit of being individual, and it can't be forced into a nice neat boax - It's always breaking out and doing weird ****.
Including, sometines, helpfully weird ****, like what stem cells do. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.
