i don't know if this has been said yet, but what about mine application in 0.0?
make them like bubbles, area of effect and all that. speaking as an ex-merc, i never found myself camping a gate for too long, or if i did it was with instalockers and gankers. same goes with stations, they either got by with insta's or instant warpers (eg.shuttles) which the mines wouldnt have time to affect anyway before they warped. pretty impractical if you ask me. also, if you use large mines by a station, wouldnt the explosion hit the station and concordokken your minelayer?
when i think of minefields, i see thousands of mines libarally spread over space, set with a proximity fuse to blow the hell out of whatever got too close. this also wouldnt work in empire, as random people would get exploded. but for alliances it would be the perfect defence. mines visible to only their alliance members/allies, while their enemies blundered into them. placing them around stations, with lanes through again visible to alliance members only. the opportunities are endless.
2 new shipclasses would be needed for this, mine layer and mine clearer. the mine layer would launch the mines in a pattern, which can only be deployed in 0.0 (the pattern would need to be deployed for the mines to activate). various patterns such as close, widespread, circle, square, and whatnot would be available, with small, medium and large mines available to put into the patterns. once anchored (which would take time so the minelayer can move away from the mines) the drones would becomae active and ready to go boom.
for mine clearing, a minesweeper-stylee ship would be needed. cruiser in size, it would have the special ability of detecting mines within Xkm, with X increasing so much per skill level. then the sweeper could use guns to blow it up. it would have to be weak so a quick frigate squad can ruin the attackers idea's by destroying the sweeper, tactics would be required to defend the sweeper while he works. another idea would to stop random people laying mines at belts would be a module that detects mines straight ahead and destroys them, so if you move slowly you can clear a path for your ship. the cap requirements would have to be pretty high so you cannot tank and do this (good for gankers, balances it).
as for skill requirements, the actual laying skill would need high requirements, just enough to make them viable for alliances. with every level you train the minelaying skill you gain an extra pattern, such as line, round, loose, close and mesh or something. skills would be available to increase damage output and whatnot.
skills for sweeping mines would be mediovre for the module, high for the ship.
not sure whatyou guys think, but running this through my head the possbilities seem endless.
