Grand Theft Auto is always in the news. Its just some angry mothers looking to blame games instead of themselves for raising their children wrong.
I remember playing Mortal Kombat when i was about 7 or 8 and I turned out fine... FINISH HIM!!!

The media will always complain, I remember a full front page story in a paper when Cannon Fodder was released.
One point in the article they said GTA started the drive and shoot genre? Chase HQ started the drive and shoot genre. GTA started the 3D-drive-and-shoot-get-out-the-car-and-pwn genre.
I think Db preacher has connections in rockstar, so he's a better source to confirm stuff than the bbc (who have a habit of blowing things out of proportion, no pun intended).

Seriously though I think it's best put as it was by "bitkari" on the Eurogamer.net comments about this news article.

I can't comment on current lawsuits against R* apart from restating the official comment which was:
"We also feel confident that the investigation will uphold the original rating of the game, as the work of the mod community is beyond the scope of either publishers or the ESRB."

I think the're being most upset about the part that you're actually expected to pleasure the girl first and foremost, and if you fail then you're penalized... :s

Sad that sex is considered worse than violence. I bet the people who would complain over that still think babies come from the stork.
To paraphrase Larry Flint, if you think it is obscene, don't blame (Larry Flint), blame the creator.
Also, isn't the ESRB a voluntary organization and not actually required by law to comply with? -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

It says GTA KICK STARTED the genre, i.e. gave it a boost/increased demand for this type.

Parents, especially American parents, seem to constantly be looking everywhere but at themselves when it comes to reasons why their kids grow up to be fat ignorant wife-beaters.

Well, maybe not, but it just enhanced my point that people blame everything but themselves these days.
Having said that, we all blame other people for our own mistakes from time to time

Whatever the media might say, as a fairly avid game's player, considering the number of NPCs killed on a daily basis in all games combined, I think alone I've personally probably managed to depopulate a very good portion of an NPC stellar system, if not the better part of a planet. They've been run over, shot, blown up, pushed, poked, prodded, beaten with a 2 foot rubber adult play-toy (San Andreas, I was curious), strangled, stabbed, squashed and otherwise been snuffed out by other dastardly means. If Eve players consider how many combined Guristas, Serpentis, Angel, etc podless pilots are killed daily, it makes you wonder just how good the Guristas pay package is.
Seriously though, controversial games, song lyrics and movies will always make headlines. The media thrive on controversy and bad news, and causing panic, scare-mongering and what not is perfect for selling papers...that's not cynical, that's marketing in a free-press. I think anyone who plays games is usually fairly clued in, though it's not entirely unbelievable that some players might not know where the line is between a game and real life. The boundaries have blurred a lot in recent years, though that's still no excuse for game related stabbings and what not.
Still, under the circumstances, that article is pretty hypocritical, or at least written with a double standard. If a parent is happy for their children to play games with restricted content, I can't honestly believe an "implied" sex scene would raise more eyebrows than gratuitous, explicit violence. I say bring on the gratuitous, explicit sex...ummm....I mean err...*looks for his delete key*

funny thing is, the parents who complain are the ones who care about their children in other ways too. the kids who get bad influences from games and tv are come from parents who absolutely don't care about them.
additionally there are a lot of games that got much more violence but they simply suck. gta sa is made quite good though and quite much the only thing that keeps me away from eve atm. --

Haha, I have this mod. I got it bundled with another one that opens the entire map at the start. :\
I've never used it though.. you can only do it after a "date with your girlfriend" and well.. I always blow the chicks head off before we even get started...
It's funny though, cause they haven mentioned, yet, that all you have to do is download a TXD tool, and a basic photoshop-ish program and you can replace all the pedestrians with naked, anatomically correct, freaks.

I would let my kid play GTA only because the simple fact that I would take the 10 minutes out of my life to teach him that what happens in the game is NOT REAL AND YOU SHOULDN'T DO IT! There will ALWAYS be bad apples and its sad that the overwhelming minority screws it up for all of us here in the states. I swear people write laws these days as an adhoc replacement for common-freakin-sense.
If your kid asks you why you can shoot prostitutes in the head in GTA as opposed to shooting them in real life you can give them two simple answers. 1.) 99% of the time your gun won't have a silencer and people will hear you and you will go to jail and become some big guys fiancee and 2.)Most prostitutes have VD soooooo its a bad idea to sleep with them anyways.
Do it however you but christ people just need to teach their kids commonsense and right from wrong.

... uhmm.. what about the 3.) you have no ****in' right to ruin someone's life if they don't try to mess with you first? Because if the "common sense" we're supposed to teach kids is, it's ok to shoot people as you please as long as no one catches you then... ugh :/

Quote: Do it however [you want] but christ people just need to teach their kids commonsense and right from wrong.
That seems to be a concept that many parents struggle with. It's not their job, it's the teachers' job. It's not their fault, it's society's fault. They have rights, you know, they demand that no one dares infringe their rights, but when it comes to the responsibilities that come with those rights, they will have no idea what they are.
This whole "it's not my fault, it's society's/my kids' teachers'/my parents cos they didn't love me enough boo hoo/the government's fault" attitude seems to be endemic in Western society. It's then reinforced by ambulance-chasing lawyers, insurance companies, the Health and Safety Executive, and every other organisation you can think of trying to wrap us up in cotton wool and protect us from everything that can go wrong in our lives.
Looking for someone to blame when your kids turn out to be antisocial retards in and out of prison most of their lives? Well, rather than pointing to a videogame, try taking a look at yourself for a change.

Applauds. Bang on with the rights Vs responsibilities thing. Amazing just how quickly a society will become reliant on the state if allowed to.
Please note the nanny state doesn't really seek to protect it's people. It just another form of social control. If you remove people's responsibility for their own actions you ultimately remove control over those actions from them.

While true you dont have to have your game rated by the ESRB, most retail centers refuse to carry unrated games. No walmart = severe drop in sales. More so, if game companies consistantly undermined the voluntary ESRB rating system, that simply encourages american lawmakers to create a new, required, much worse rating system.

Stuff like this appears "in the news" from time to time, but it always passes, never to be mentioned again.
The funny thing is, the gaming industry will continue to flourish for the simple reason that its moralistic opponents have a shorter attention span than we do.
How deliciously apt.
