I will admit, math is not my bag.

I'm having trouble understanding and comparing the different tracking speeds. I assume faster tracking speed is good; but I have no sense of an average, or really know where to begin the comparison.

Can someone help me out with this stuff?

Tracking speeds are measured in radians per second, so higher speeds are better.

1 radian = 360/2*PI = 57.29 degrees.
As most turrets seem to have tracking speeds below 0.1 rad/s (or 5.7 deg/s) we can see that they move damned slow.

There is a good post somewhere on tracking speeds and optimal ranges for tracking but i cannot remember where it is.

All you really need to try and do though is get Tracking Speed, Range and Damage mods as high as possible and get RoF as low as possible.

Good Hunting :)

the farther away a target is the easier it will be to track because the gun has to move smaller ammounts to keep up. this is why you should use the lowest damage ammo in your long range weapons.

so does that mean that low damage ammo will usually get wrecking hits, when combined with high tracking speed (from mods)?

Wrecking hits are a fixed percentage, 1%.

While I can't actually say if using the lowest damage ammo is a good idea for long range guns, the idea there is that you make up for the loss in damage per hit by getting more hits.

There is a turret calculator in the "Player Guides" section on the left and at the end of it you can fill in your weapon info and it will provide a graph showing what range you'll score the most hits at.

Someone, I think it was farjung, had a post where he tested it. And it was more than 1%, however, when the target he started testing it against was moving, the amount of wrecking hits droped. Let me see if I can find it...

It's essentially based off the circumference of an arc of a circle formula.

Tracking speed = Transversal / distance

So, take the target's transversal speed (you can enable it in the overview), divide by the distance it is from you and compare to your weapon's tracking speed.
If the number you get is lower, then you can hit it. If the number you get is higher, then it's travelling too fast.

For PVE, you can make some assumptions: most rats don't go above 400m/s transversal, so if you divide 400 by your tracking speed, you'll get the minimum range (in metres) that you can hit any rat.

There's an additional calculation for signature radius versus signature resolution, but I can't remember what it is (I know it's not as simple as the missile version, which is why I can't remember it...).

I noticed there's another column now - Angular Velocity which shows the speed in something that looks suspiciously like radians. Am I wrong in saying that just having that column on in teh overview will be better than having to work out the distance you need to be at all the time?

I did the math and found that the turrets on the Iowa class track better then Minmater projectile BS turrets. About on par with 425 cruiser turrets.
