...and yes with optional PvP? If my friends and I want to have a go at that?
I mean I know everyone is quick to reply to threads about PvE with the word "carebear" because they have a limited vocabulary of insults and they think it is some ultimate slam.
Well here's the deal. I'm an adult. I work to pay bills. While I know many other adults play this game, I'm just not the one that has hours on end to play. I don't actually find it fun for some kid to then destroy my hours of time that I've invested.... Because I'm not playing the game to gamble my time. It's FAR too valuable. -- edit: gamble sure with NPCs but not gamble with kiddies where I will have zero chance and at times I'm not even looking to engage in PvP.
The problem is people don't understand that time is money.... And people like different things and it's ok.
Is there anything to do in this game PvE wise that would allow me to have fun with a few friends for a few hours a week at most and work my way up to getting some decent equipment and ships and have fun?
I don't need to go into 0.0. I don't need to get capital ships and POS' and whatever else. Not unless it's against the computer... Even still, I know it requires gas to power those POS' and time... I'm just looking for a quiet game with some friends. I know that didn't exactly exist 7 years ago when I played EVE before...But I'm hoping CCP learned how to cater to a broader player base in those past 7 years. I know I've grown myself and learned a lot in 7 years...Like not to sink all my time and waste my life playing games. However, a few hours here and there is actually fun.
I'm interested in most everything except mining. I think it's absolutely appalling that people sit in front of asteroids for hours on ending mining.... That's worse than wasting your life screwing around on Facebook.
So please... Please someone super awesome out there tell me that there's something fun to do for grandpa. =) |

It's totally possibly to play Eve on a casual basis without getting ganked all the time, I've been playing for the better part of 4 years and have rarely been forced into ship PvP I didn't want by other players (touches wood, strokes lucky rabbits foot and all the other superstitious nonsense).
The key is situational awareness and knowing about the mechanics others will use to try and force the issue. For example if you're hunting NPCs and someone loots a wreck belonging to you, which flags them as suspect, you have a couple of choices. You can ignore them, you can blow up the wrecks as they get close to them, you can abandon all the wrecks or you can shoot them, only one of these choices will always cause accidental explosions. Knowledge is power in this game and trust is the rarest currency of all.
The only ship PvP that you can never avoid is a suicide gank, but you can certainly mitigate the chances of it happening to you by not fitting overly expensive and shiny modules, not autopiloting a hauler full of goodies, not autopiloting your pod and not being AFK.
If you and your friends want to indulge in some fun, casual and cheap PvP I recommend Red vs Blue. They allow you to hop in and out of corp at will, the ships they use are mostly disposable and podding other RvB members is forbidden.
Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times, it's a goonspiracy. |

I've been playing for about 5 months (this wasn't my first account) and from what I've learned and experienced, this this is spot on advice. Make sure that shooting you isn't profitable and you can play at your pace in your style. It's sandbox and there is plenty of sand, be it for castles or whatever you enjoy.

Awesome. Thanks! That said, is there any way for my friends and I to run any sort of "dungeons" ?? I like this scanning stuff... Can we find challenging sites to run in high sec space for the 3 of us? Make enough loot to upgrade stuff, get new ships, etc. ? Without getting too bored? Again I just remember this game being all about mining and PvP (7 years ago).
I played briefly back then and decided to give the game another shot. I was just so turned off by sitting around mining for hours on end because that's what the corp we were in required. Felt like slave labor ha.

Exploration: 30 min - 1 hr / day (more if you want). Undock, launch a few probes, find an exploration site, have fun for half hour or so killing pirate NPCs, hacking containers, salvaging, etc. Income 200k ISK to 100 mil depending on luck.
Missions: Talk to agent, get a mission, do it (30 min - 1.5 hrs). Repeat if you have more time. Income can top out at 15-20 mil/hr.
Trade: Check the markets, use some spreadsheets, figure out what might be profitable to buy now sell later or buy at a mission hub, transport, and sell at a trade hub. You'd be spending a few minutes to a couple hours setting up and managing market orders, and/or transporting goods.
PVP: Get in ship, fly into lowsec, find some people to fight. The search can take some time, the fight a couple minutes.
Faction Warfare PVP: Get in ship, find a FW fleet, roam around for a bit killing enemies and taking over FW plexes for great LP and glory.
The things that take time in this game are: cat herding (if you're a corp CEO and need to babysit a bunch of newbies / people, it takes time and effort), and large scale PVP (typically, alliances have to fight other alliances, and the fights often happen between time zones, which means you get pinged at 4 am to help defend a critical base or fleet). |

Yes. This. Can I do it in high sec space? Can people come in and kill you? Or are you relatively safe?
I'm not so concerned about loot thieves, I mean that's kinda the deal in many games...That kinda missing out on something because I wasn't fast enough situation is ok... But the whole getting blown up and having to spend the next week mining asteroids part is pretty much the set backs that turn me off when I have limited time. |

Yes exploration can be done in highsec, the worst you'll probably get is loot thieves, unless you're silly enough to be flying a blinged out ship.

Also look into Incursions. There's a lot more pve oriented content since you last played and it is much more casual friendly.
However to address your first question - There is still no sort of pvp=off button. You can surely minimize your risk of being killed but that risk is always present in EVE. |

You should be able to make enough doing whatever that if someone blows you up you shrug, say "Darn!" and buy yourself a new ship. your exposure to danger is the same as your exposure to isk - an hour of flying around earning isk is an hour of flying around with the chance of being shot. Keep the isk intake faster than the rate of loss. This is the same if you play for 30 minutes once a week as it is if you play 80 hours a week. "Is it safe?" isn't the question to ask. You need to pay attention to "Is it more profitable after counting whatever losses I might have?" In that terms, i'd say lowsec is safer in a number of cases. |

In high-sec space, the decision to blow you up is made based on the cost of your ship / cargo vs. the cost of the attacker's ship.
Most combat ships have enough armor that it requires a much more expensive ship to one-shot kill you before Concord police comes to kill the attacker, so it's not worth it unless you're carrying hundreds of million ISK in loot.
High-sec exploration sites can be done in a cruiser. Vexor or Caracal, for example. Some sites only allow frigates, and so you need a combat frigate too, like an Incursus or Merlin or whatever you choose. And very very rarely you may need a battlecruiser (Drake, Hyperion, whatever).
In any case the cost of these ships is 500k, 8 million, and 50 million in increasing order, and so it's not worth attacking you when you fly them. Unless you outfit your ship with super-rare (and expensive) 500 mil - 5 billion ISK officer modules. In which case you'll be attacked, for the chance that they drop as loot when your ship blows up. |

Okay here is my reply:
1.) Yes. It is perfectly fine to play EVE casually, actually the skill training method is a good advantage in that it also trains while not logged in. So grinding to out class someone isn't possible.
Just keep in mind, the more time you do invest in EVE the more you get out of it. If you only have 5 minutes and want PvP, that will be hard to supply. But it is still possible.
2.) Keep in mind in EVE there is no PvP-free space. As soon as you undock people can (and will at one point in your EVE life) shoot you. They will be punished but some don't really care about the punishment. So a 100% PvP Free thing doesn't exist in EVE other then not logging in at all.
3.) Your options as I see them from your OP:
* Mission running (fairly safe from PvP unless you fly a top of the line "Let's put all officer mods on my ship" Tengu). * Incursions (fleet style PvE events. But they may require a fair bit of time. Haven't tried them out myself so can't really say anything specific about them)I. * Exploration (combat sites, RADAR sites, etc. - fight NPC, hack container, pray for nice juicy drop and cash it in).

Thanks everyone, this has all been EXCELLENT information. I just remember years ago mining for hours on end to recover what you lost being the only option aside from some boring agent missions (which did not seem to pay out as well as this last lvl 1 mission I just did where I found over a million in salvage)...I did run agent missions and actually got good at it. Got some blueprints (never used them). Sadly I gave away my character to a friend (who apparently sold it -- I do know at the time I quit it was worth about $300 so that was nice of him) ... But that's ok. I have some friends playing with me now and I wouldn't want the spread in skill points.
Can you do anything of these exploration sites in a frigate by the way? |

Yes, you can probe down sites in high-sec. The real question is if you can find one that hasn't been picked apart. Parts of high-sec are very congested (especially around trade hubs) and you are in competition against many other players doing the same exact thing. If you find quiet, "backwater" systems that are out of the way then you may have an easier time finding sites to run. However the trade-off you make is that getting ships, mods, and supplies just as hard.
As far as safety goes; provided that you don't do something stupid, you are relatively safe.
And you should have SOME concern for "loot thieves." If someone loots (not salvages, that's different) from a wreck you have created then you are allowed to engage and kill the offender (they will turn red). If you do so then the looter can engage back in self defense. Often, PvPers try to get relatively young and/or ignorant players to do exactly this so they can kill people. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

You can't AVOID having it happen. You don't have to let it succeed. One can experience a suicide gank, be left in the middle of the warpout to get clear of the ganker, looking at a somewhat scratched set of shields, and go "Huh. Someone is replacing a gank ship." They still have "experienced a suicide gank". On second thought, you can avoid it by flying in lowsec I suppose. |

Why are you even playing this game?
I'm 38
I work full time
I play Eve casually at the weekends and occasionally during the week for a couple of hours
I started playing this game because it is a challenge
I PvP because this is a PvP game which is WHY I chose to play it

If you desire a game where you can do PvE while at the same time you have to be on your guard cause the E can turn into a P within a second. Stop looking, welcome to EVE.
That said, high-sec is quite "safe" if you follow the basic rules that won't make you a target to others. I tried to do that, but those Red-Fed scumbags keep killing me either way. |

A lot of us in SC are older with kids, wives, husbands etc. Many of us play part time only due to work and before mentioned family.
That said, yes you can play this game casually, PVE or PVP. I think that is what is actually attracting a lot of us more mature players to the game, I dont have to set aside X amount of hours to do an instance/raid/group sex.. whatever! You can log in, play a few minutes, log out again and your character is still progressing.
Of course, the more you play... the more you get out of it.
Can you avoid some young punk (or some of us older punks) from totally ruining your day? Well... yes and no.. You can make yourself a very unattractive target to make the risk as small as possible but you can never remove it.
That said, I used to just carebear in empire for years without really ever getting into any pvp or being harassed by some punk ^^ Really the whole, EVE is super dangerous and you will get ganked is really exaggerated. Can it happen? Yes sure, but if you are smart you can make that risk a LOT smaller.
Don't fly a super pimped ship around in a busy system and dont mouth off in local when someone ninjas your mission.
And should you get ganked, dont start screaming and yelling about it. Don't call them pathethic little scum with needle small.. you know whats etc.. well unless it is one of my friends in SC. We so enjoy a good tearfilled gank ^^
All kidding aside, be sensible and eve will be quite rewarding if you wish to just be in peace. Act like a hormonal teenager who thinks he can take on the whole biker bar by walking in and calling them all names..
well dont be surprised when you get the same treatment you would if you wore girlscout outfit and walked into said biker bar and called their mothers names.. the poolcue will be inserted where you dont want it.

i never said compete with more experienced people. i wouldn't expect to. i just meant if i worked up to it.
the problem i had with eve in the past was YOU HAD NO CHOICE. you either PvP'd or you didn't play eve.
look, there's been a lot of helpful comments here and I've given some things a shot and I like it so far. the game has certainly evolved in the past 5-7 years. there's a lot more to do and it's becoming a much more rounded game. before it was very narrow. yes, many ships and items and complexities...but very narrow in play. now it's not and i was just trying to see people's thoughts on that.... with as little flak and trolling as possible. |

7. Trolling is prohibited. Trolling is the word used to describe a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting the players. Posts of this nature are disruptive and do not contribute to the sense of community we want for our forums.

The answers to many new players' questions may be found in the Eve Knowledge Base and we encourage our players to seek information there before posing questions on the boards.
20. Post constructively. Negative feedback can be very useful, provided that it is presented in a civil, factual manner. Tell us what you don't like and why and how you feel it could be improved. Posts that are not constructive, insulting or rude may be deleted, no matter how valid the ideas behind them may be.

Even if you don't interact with anyone or associate yourself with anyone other than your own buddies... you are in constant competition with other people (as I stated in my last post) who are often more experienced. Every probable site you find is one your rivals didn't. Every rat you kill is one your competitors didn't. Every site you hack/analyze/loot is one that your adversaries can no longer do.
And while you may not risk losing your ships and equipment buying and selling things on the market, your wallet could easily disappear due to other people's actions.
So while you seek to basically "keep to yourself" just remember that the game and the players may not cater to this. And this is an intentional part of the game. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Log in, do stuff, log out. Drag loot and salvage to a local trade hub once a week, and sell to standing buy orders.
Will you get ganked in highsec? Maybe, possibly, eventually. |

Well sure that makes sense. That's to be expected. Don't get me wrong, I like that there's other people around... I like that you can "miss out" on opportunities. That's all fair and fine and the chance factor comes in, etc. It's CRITICAL for the economy as well. Which is part of what makes this a really good and attractive game full of surprises.
However, what I was more concerned with and was trying to figure out - was if someone was going to essentially "game" the game and gank me (without me having any chance at all) wasting my hours, or quite realistically, months of time. That's just something, at my point in life, I am not interested in. That's a huge turn off because I'm paying money for the game. I'm not paying money to simply lose it all randomly.
There's a huge difference in the risk I WILLINGLY or knowingly take vs. the ones completely out of my control that are not by design.
Just last night, my friend was picking up supplies in a .5 system (he had no choice for the purchase and I assume the gankers knew this) and got shot the second he left the station. I assume people were sitting far enough away from the turrets and were essentially going for an instant kill type situation...They only got through his shields and didn't even scratch the armor...But still. THAT, for all intents and purposes, is the type of thing that shouldn't really exist given how the game is designed. It was an exploit or cheap trick. It's no different than that (old) video of some people fighting (and winning) CONCORD in highsec. Clearly one is not supposed to be able to do that. The game developers did not intend for that and I believe it was fixed. However, they can't adjust the game mechanics to fix all of the "exploits" because it would then ruin other parts of the game.
...And that's the problem and challenge for CCP. I understand it's a quite complex situation, but they make you invisible when you first jump into a system before you move...They should make you invulnerable for a few seconds when exiting a station in highsec (unable to target/shoot during that time too). There's creative solutions out there...And I'm trying to ascertain if they've done anything in the past 7 years to expand upon the game or if its the same old go to 0.0 and lose hours of your life type game ... Because that's your only option. Then go mine.
Now, how about this situation. Imagine that was me leaving the station and my client froze (which it randomly does on OS X). Would it have warped me away? Would I have survived? I'm not sure...But I can tell you this, if that were to eventually become a common scenario...I'd never play this game. CCP would lose money and what would the human players gain? Nothing. Popping new players gives them nothing of value (my friend was in an empty tech1 destroyer).
Anyway.... It seems like that's not the typical case (based on helpful insight here as well as my 3 days of playing). So that's terrific news!
If I was unclear, just don't think that I don't WANT to be affected by other people in the game... I just don't want to be unfairly affected by people before I've had a chance (or if it's impossible for me to have a chance). That's another severe issue for any MMO developer - they need to ensure that new players aren't harassed out of the game immediately or turned off because that means they lose money and players. Though there's a balance...And while "grandma" may have been attracted to WoW, I wouldn't necessarily expect the same audience to be attracted to EVE. Which is just fine. |

Well, the easiest way to deal with this is to fly cheap, and not give a damn about whether it gets blown up. There's plenty you can do with cheap ships that will "pay off" the ship in a short period of time.
There are also strategies for dealing with station-camps. Use an instant-undock bookmark in the brief period of invulnerability. Tank your ship. Buy the goods from a different station and haul them. Use an independent hauler. Use a hauling alt. Turn down courier missions to high-risk systems. Use the in-game map and dotlan to identify high-risk systems.
Or just don't care because your odds of getting suicide-ganked in any given session are low, and you can make up those losses later in the session.
For what it's worth, Eve seems to be pretty good about saving my ship when the client crashes. |

First part:
Are you sure it was a 0.5 and not a 0.4 system.
If it was a 0.5, that's high-sec and the assaulting persons would be killed by CONCORD unless your friend was a legal target to them.
If it was a 0.4, that's low-sec and tanking station guns IS an ALLOWED game mechanic. Tanking station guns and faction police IS allowed. Tanking / outrunning CONCORD is NOT allowed and considered an exploit (and thus you are able to petition it if you see it).
The 2nd part:
Actually, if you undock you ARE invulnerable for 60 seconds as long as:
You don't move (align to something, double click in space). You don't activate any of your modules.
Given that a session change timer now a days is 10 seconds...
As soon as you undock hit Ctrl-Space, this stops your ship but doesn't lift the undock invulnerabilty. After 10 seconds you cleared the session timer, this means that you can re-dock if you are still close enought to the station (if you hit Ctrl-space and the station isn't a "kick-out" station, this should be the case) As the invulnerability timer is 60 seconds, as soon as your session timer is cleared, you still have 50 seconds (make it 40 just to be sure) to look at your situation and make a decision. Another big part of not getting blown up in Eve is not giving people a REASON to blow you up.
The three reasons to blow someone up are: 1. Profit, i.e. they have loot you want or a ship that will look good in a killmail, or they're a competitor of you or your corp 2. Tears, i.e. they take the game FAR too seriously and when you blow them up their reaction is entertaining. 3. Ire, i.e. they've annoyed you or you're taking revenge on them for some social or in-game slight
Now, the reason I point this out is that you came out the gate, in a game you haven't played yet, with a long, kinda whiny post about how everyone on the forums is a name-calling douche that just doesn't get you, and anyone that blows you up is a "kid" that just doesn't have the maturity to deal with real adults.
If you carry that kind of **** into your in-game behavior, you're both going to annoy people (#3) and you're already producing tears before you even started flying (#2). So... if you want to not get jumped in missions and so on you may want to tone that down. Consider being polite and not saying anything if you have the urge to denigrate 3/4 of the game's population, even. |

You know damn right well EvE allows all of the things you don't want "at this point in your life"...whatever that means. You're doomed and EvE isn't going to change because you got old and soft. |

They do. You're invulnerable for 30 seconds after undocking (or is it 60, can't remember) or until you take some action. It's so that the client has time to load grid.
Quote:Now, how about this situation. Imagine that was me leaving the station and my client froze (which it randomly does on OS X). Would it have warped me away? Would I have survived?
Froze or crashed? If you disconnected, then your ship warps away and disappears in about 30 sec.
I get short freezes too, high latency internet connection, and it just means I have no control for a few secs. Would be really bad in the middle of a lowsec fight, but pottering around in highsec, unless I'm carrying stupid amounts of cargo, have a suspect or criminal flag or am at war, unlikely anything will happen in the middle of a few second freeze. Unlikely, not impossible.

That can definitely happen in Eve. If it does, in most cases it'll be your fault, you agressed a mission flipper, stole from a can, went to lowsec, didn't watch for suicide gankers in cases where you're a target or went to lowsec. Harassing new players in the starter systems is forbidden, anywhere else, you're just another player and who's to tell whether you're a new player or an old player with a new character.
One of the premises behind Eve is that anyone anytime can completely ruin another person's day. To be honest, if that's a complete no-no to you, maybe reconsider playing, because sooner or later it'll happen to you. |

I mostly play on the weekends if I have time. I'm lucky to have found a corp that understands my RL workload and is willing to keep me around. I contribute to fleet fights when I can. Sometimes I bring a T1 cruiser logistics (they're ALWAYS in demand for fleets) and sometimes I bring a combat ship of some kind or another. Sometimes I don't log in for several weeks, depending on RL.
Your best bet is to find a corp that doesn't kick people for inactivity if they know about your circumstances ahead of time. Not necessarily a pirate corp, but find a corp that lives in lowsec. You get that right mix of PvE and PvP activities. Trolling is like art. Anyone can finger paint, but it takes true talent to create a masterpiece. |

Not only is it possible to play casually, it is quite easy to.
Form a small corp of just you, or you and a couple friends. I've never been war decced in a small corp that was not actively recruiting. I've never had my PVE ship suicide ganked, but I've also avoided fitting it with lots of valuable items that may drop to gankers.
If someone probes you out and starts salvaging/looting your wrecks, just ignore them.
If you get a war dec, just drop to NPC corp. You get 3 toons per account, so can hold your corp open with an alt.
