This thread pointed out the possible extinction of indy-based NPC traders caused by freighters and billions in trade capital. The proposed solution was to lock freighters out of empire space.
Knowing what I think I could do with a freighter and a billion trade capital, I think the original post has a point. I don't like the solution of locking freighters out of empire space though.
Here are some other possible solutions.
(1) Lock freighters out of empire. Seems unnatural.
(2) Massively increase the available trade so that a few freighters can't eat it all. Unfortunately this might lead to inflation on a horrific scale.
(3) Don't let anyone in a NPC company fly a freighter. Ex-independant traders band together in freighter companies. This is bad because traders generally want to trade, not fly escort all the time. On the other hand, the trade wars could be fun. And some freighter losses would offset inflation.
(4) Introduce a set of 'time critical' trade goods (eg perishable food, VIP passengers) that need to be hauled within an hour over about 10 jumps. And nerf instas. Unfortunately this might be a lot of development work. Or maybe not, just increase the amount of agent missions that do this already (maybe add a class of agent that specialises in this).
Flame away.

Agreed

Nah, have the freighter pilot floy to each station to fill 0.05% of their hold, solnds like fun ... NOT

What have you been smoking ? The level of co-ordination between these people has been "limited" to say the least (good job it's not me being wrecked at the gate), and you are talking about forming a corp ?

They are there are agent missions, but yes, some items require a "decay time", as well as some types of cargo required a special container to transport then (see radioactive materials).

It surprises me that an industrialist REALLY wants this.

Depends on what NPC corporation you talk to, you might be hauling all day for a lvl 4 agent, just so you get your next "important storyline mission" that gives you your next +5 preception implant to sell . . . . . -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Freighters will NOT break the NPC trade good economy. Why you ask? Well, the only time a freighter would be worth it is if the freighter could be nearly filled.
So lets say you're hauling Good X 10 jumps, buying at 2000, selling at 2500. Good X is 1m3.
You buy 5000 Good X. Price rises to 2100.
You buy 5000 Good X. Price rises to 2200.
You buy 5000 Good X. Price rises to 2300.
At this point, the price stabilizes. You buy the rest, like 900k, at 2300.
Now, you go to the buyer.
You sell 5000 Good X. Price falls to 2400.
You sell 5000 Good X. Price falls to 2300.
You sell 5000 Good X. Price falls to 2200.
At this point the price stabilizes, and you can sell the rest of your goods.
Net result: Loss.
Note that if, for example, you were only hauling 15km3 worth, you would have made money. --

Filling a freighter hold with NPC goods should be a matter of time and (a bucket load of) money.
I'm assuming that any freighter NPC trade monopolisation will occur through narrow-margin, long term buy and sell orders with seriously huge capital (which, I am told, is lying around out there), not attempting to fill a freighter at a single station.
I suspect no-one has done it on a large scale because it would tie up ungodly amounts of capital, it would be a logistical nightmare organising the haulage, and most of the profit would go in haulage. Now, if freighters simplify the haulage and make haulage 20 times cheaper ...

somehow I think none of the mentioned solutions really solves the problems at hand. But an interesting thought occurs: The difference between a maxed Indy (~20k m3) and a maxed freighter (~1mio m3 i think) is simply too big. What most traders actually want (as we've heard in many other threads) is a ship with something around 75k - 100k m3 (I wouldn't mind seeing such a ship myself). Then one could also (possibly) lock Freighters out of >0.5 systems. Does this sound completely senseless or.....what do you guys think? |

We'll need to let the damn ships on the forums soon, so we can store all these duplicate threads tbh. ______________________________________________

How about indy traders switch to trading in tech 2 products that will have much larger regional disparities due to NWO.

moving tech 2 items from empire to low sec with a 30-50% mark up is profitable but high risk.
Personally as long as a good remains profitable ill trade it - my aim is to simply boost volumes within the game world to encourage CCP to pay more attention to NPC goods trading.
It seems if enough players do something then CCP look at it. If we want a greater role for NPC trading goods more of us need to engage in low profit but high volume trades.
This is somethign that needs to be looked at bt wont be in any great detail until we step up the volumes. So feel free to trade youre fav high volume empire based trade routes ie holoreels, polytextiles, quafe, carbon etc.

If everyone could get a freighter then changes are needed. Since freighters are out of the reach of almost everyone AND since they take soooo long to make I hardly seem them as being commonplace for people to use them as trade runs. ═════════════════ ½½½ I R Fabricator! +++ ═══════_ |

I wish you luck, but the vision pushed by CCP is of a player driven economy, and would expect to see NPC trading forming less of an opportunity. Every patch has new items, but only a very few end up in the hands of NPC producers.

Edited by: Feta Solamnia on 13/07/2005 13:28:52 you probably mena "Freighters and independent NPC TRADERS".
I see no damn reason for npc trading to exist. Sure, back in the early days of eve where the population was 1k yes, you had to artificially create market opportunities. But with the current market and playerbase there exists no such thing.
Say no to the brainless npc trading! It's all that real trading is not
With that said, why the hell would I want freighters out of the empire? Moving bs to to popular stations with astronomical factory prices is a whole new trading segment waiting to be filled.
EDIT: Also, npc trading ****es me off for the following reason:
