The use of scan probes are, probes that scan.

No, but really, scan probes are really wierd. To be most effective, you must make a triangle with the scan probes, when you launch a probe it will have a circle around in on the scanner, showing how far it can scan.

Now, For maximum effectiveness, the scan probes need to all be touching in the triangle, and overlapping in the middle. Also, there is a 1au buffer all around them.

Now for the tricky part, It has to be on that same plane (1au up and down as well). Which is extremely tricky in a system that is not all on the same plane. Especially considering that we have a 2-d ******* scanner in 3-d ******* space.

Or you can do it the ghetto way, get 1.5 mil km away from them, drop 3 scan probes, scan.
