Recently IGÇÖve been putting a few hours into Planetside 2, which has me wondering if similar mechanics might work for EVE. IGÇÖm particularly interested in the idea of vehicles that can accommodate more than one player. ItGÇÖs very common for modern aircraft to accommodate a multiple person crew. Maybe one person focusing on the flying and navigation, while another focuses on weapons. PS2 has a lot of vehicles like this and it makes for an interesting battle dynamic. Not only do you have to coordinate with other players trying to take over the same areas, but you also have to coordinate with your pilot so they know where to point you or which direction to move in. We already have a similar dynamic in POSGÇÖs I guess, but IGÇÖve never been in the gunnerGÇÖs seat during a battle, so IGÇÖm not sure whatGÇÖs thatGÇÖs like in EVE.
This all has me wondering if it would be viable for CCP to develop a ship that could accommodate more than one pod pilot. Would battles be any more interesting if there was one person solely focusing on flying while another was only focused on weapons and say another on EW or something else? I know lore uses the idea of pods specifically to justify only one pilot per ship, however, some ships are vastly more complex than others. This could be something restricted to certain types of ships, maybe just caps and larger or just supers. Furthermore, I think if properly done, it wouldnGÇÖt just be something you could toss an alt at unless you are very competent at multi-tasking irl. The main idea is that two (possibly more) working in concert in a single ship might be more effective/efficient than one person trying to do it all.
TLDR; Why not have ships that accommodate more than one pilot, giving specific tasks such as navigation, weapons and/or ew to each pilot?

Short answer: No.
Long answer: Multi-player vehicles provides benefits or firepower that greatly exceed that of two individual infantrymen. In Eve, a 2nd person could bring another ship that would effectively double their firepower, so in order for multi-pilot ships to work in Eve, they would have to provide over twice the benefit of two individual ships. Which would be a huge balancing issue.
In terms of lore, one of the main selling points of pod pilots is that pod pilots do away with the need for a large crew and bridge officers.
Eve is not an MMOFPS. Given how twitchy, fast and sensor overloaded that Planetside is, having multi-crew vehicles makes sense. In Eve, you don't need to worry about maneuvering around terrain, dodging fire, keeping the crosshairs on a moving target while riding in a bouncing vehicle, etc. In contrast, despite space being the ultimate 3D environment, the lack of terrain, the long distances, and the lack of directional damage in Eve mostly obviates the need to think in 3D, and you sure as heck don't need to worry about keeping a mouse centered on your target.
Multi-crew vehicles probably wouldn't reduce lag. The same messages have to be sent to all the crew in a multi-crew ship, so the reduced number of ships on the field wouldn't necessarily translate into an increase number of players on grid.
tl;dr - multi-crew ships would require a huge overhaul of Eve's game mechanics, and a lot of the MMOFPS benefits provided by multi-crew vehicles wouldn't translate to Eve without turning Eve into an MMOFPS.

Gah now you made me want to play Planetside 2 again DUST514 isn't on PC because CCP wants 2 different communities influencing each other, not people tabbing out to give themselves Orbital Strikes. (Also they don't want to cannibalise their existing playerbase) |

To be fair, multi-person ships might actually INCREASE lag, as now each client must be visually synced, isntead of just geometrically/grid synced, since the ship is one entity piloted by two. this would mean you would have to communicate with both the sevrer AND the other computer (firewall issues/etc) or communicate with the server twice. |

Would much rather have the "Brass Pole" and those cute Gallente "entertainers" in the the Captains Quarters first, please --- I spend enough time in the "Pod of Solitude" without making it more crowded when I'm making ISKies.

this would be mad fun like i could be the pilot and click "orbit at 2500" and then you could press F1 once to start the guns and if we wanted to really get into it we could have a third guy to press F2 once to start the tracking disruptor high fives all around |

Break it up like Tech 3's. Have an Engineering, Electronics, Propulsion , Offensive and Defensive role that can be manned.
Then never undock because the five of you can never coordinate your schedules. This thread has so much content it may be 'Thread of the Year' and it is only January.

It would be really awesome to introduce a new capital ship that can put manned turrets in the highslots, one guy flying the ship with like 6 guys in the turrets themselves.
I personally think it would be cool, not sure how practical it would be though... |
