I received the following mail last night whilst mining in Minmatar space:
Quote:Press Release - Goonswarm Ice Interdiction Operation From: Victor Dathar Sent: 2011.10.10 21:20 To: .... Dear Capsuleer, As you may or may not be aware Goonswarm have been running an operation to protect the flow of Ice products in New Eden. at this time our attention is on Gallente Ice Fields. Starting Saturday 15th October 2011 this will be moved to Minimatar Ice Fields. It has been noted that you are mining in this region of space and so are being contacted in advance to join our Certified Miners Scheme. If you wish to continue to mine ice you must register and pay for a license to do so. Visit http://goonfleet.net/miners/ for instructions on how to add your self to the roster for your own protection. All fees must be sent to whom contacted you for our records or it is hihgly likely your application will be rejected. We do not want any innocent blood to be spilt do we? Personally, as a casual capsuleer I don't have the money to pay Goonswarm, but look forward to increasing ice prices.

Hmn interesting, i have a huge stockpile of all types of ice, my miner been stockpiling them day in day out for the last 6 years. I may just flood the market with cheap ice when the time comes, or maybe someone who doesn't want it to hit the market might make me an offer  |

Since this is posted in General you obviously haven't been to C&P and realize the awesome rep Goons have.
Remember this one simple rule: If the word "goon" is in the communication, corporation, name, description, url, website, or anything else you can imagine....it is a scam.
Though it is nice to see a new variant of the recuritment scam, this time only the fear of possible gank gets the newb to pay up. I'm sure they'll reimburse your fee too when accidently ganked in the excitement of it all and your ship will remain in the icefield when all other miners are destroyed. But what a great intel gathering service they created. Get the miners to voluntarily list their mining main and all the supporting alts at a one stop shop so they can us locator agents and quickly dispatch their suicide fleets. The only flaw with your argument is you can't equip a mackinaw with enough of a tank to withstand drone battleship rats. Meaning you can't bot ice mining in the drone regions.
This leaves you with a few options:
1) Manually mine the ice
2) Bot mine ice with hulks (which can tank)
3) Bot min with manual "guards" clearing the belt.
Either is a suboptimal solution. Ice would have to rise greater in value than the ABC asteroids to justify moving hulks to ice and that won't happen until oxygen isotopes gets in the 2500 range or so.

If prices rise enough to justify it, DRF will run macro fleets with a single drake that either holds aggro or clears spawn. Or a single hulk mining ice at 60% efficiency, these things are not difficult to work out. |
