How about, when you get drones to attack/mine, a little icon appears next to their target in the same way as a mining laser appears next to an asteroid icon or weapon next to a hostile target?
Lets you know that drones are actually doing something rather then sitting around

Agree, good idea ........ There is a fine line between gate camping and just standing by a gate, looking like an idiot... |

Uh, in case you hadnt noticed, their icons ARE different from pirate icons. Rats are + and drones are X. It ain't over till the fat lady falls on ya!

Some kind of drone activity indication would be tops.. I can run 8 of the lil' devils, and how many times have I sent them off in all directions or found 3 just sit there picking at their toes... too many. They need some kind of lock on icon like weapons get on locked target icons across the top of the screen.. That way I can see which drones are attacking which ship/rock/sitting there playing cards.

My personal idea, drone groups.
Junk the whole drone bay like cargo bay, no need for such big icons on drones. Make drone bay more like bookmarks. And allow creation of 'folders' for them, set a drone 'class' for each folder on creation, that way only that type of drone can be put in that group, which means right click options on the folder work like multi selecting all the drones under it.
Each folder then gets an icon with a number in it, unless you can (gasp, god forbid) choose your own icon (say from the damage type icons or a generic asteroid pic). And this gets displayed next the the target on a drone group basis.
This would allow easy drone management in all aspects (assuming the same happens in drone control window, expandable header sections with no of drones alive in group in brackets after the name). Plus you can have say, 4 EMP damage drones and 4 Explosive drones working in groups, so you easily work on the shields of one ship with a set before setting the hull killers on it and moving the EMP drones on to the next ship with shields left.
If they felt it necessary they could even make it into a skill, say.. hmmmm. "Drone Management" perhaps. Allows 1 drone group per skill level. ========================================== "Among the many mysteries of the universe the one which I ponder most often is this... Which would be worse? Peanut flavoured monkeys, or monkey flavoured peanuts?" - X
One day I might put something interesting in here. I wouldn't hold your breath. |

hmm... nice idea with the skills... I think it would be easier, what with the number of things ccp is adding here, to not switch over teh drone intreface to a new kinda of window, but ismply improve the groupings such that you don't have to have them open all the time. (i.e. allow control of them outside the bay.)
Besides, ccp get points for making the drone bay interface consistent with the cargo, et.al. interfaces. This kind of thing helps learning curves (as large as they are now....)

The 'Invert Selection' option can be very useful for managing two groups of drones. Any more than two activities, though and it obviously stops being so useful.
