Is it just me or does anyone else have the fear of ctding during an engagement. It has happened to me several times and as well to some of my enemies. I really think something needs to be done about this because this is the worse it has ever been.
Do something ccp you are ruining pvp

I'm interested to know if you've tried to use the Logserver program, as talked about in the sticky at the top of 'known issues & workarounds' here ?
I've been playing EVE lots since the patch, and not a single crash.
A friend had a similar problem too, and had even reinstalled eve, but it turned out that there were files left over from a previous install that hadn't been uninstalled. Deleted that folder and reinstalled EVE again, and it's been fine for him.

How do you arrive at the conclusions in teh title purely based on an encrease in CTD's on your particular system ?
The patch is ridiculous because you CTD more then before ? It is ruining PvP ?
Funny, I noticed nothing of the kind. I guess that makes this patch as a whole the best thing since the big bang, and makes Eve PvP the best experience a human can have right ?

Maybe it would be time for the classic: 'install your latest graphic card drivers'.
And are other games working for more than 20 min on your computers? maybe you got a memory problem or something. |

no i do not have any problems with my mem sticks. i checked that also.
and yes i have worked with putting computers together and service them for over 10years. so you can take that "change your graphics driver " and you know what to do with it. same goes for "clear the cache" comment. fact of the matter is that eve is very buggy and wont run perfectly on all PC's. but after each patch there is a reshuffeling in my driver versions to find the most stable combination for eve on my machine.
funny thing is that i can run eve in linux more stable then in windows yet i dont have the same graphics performance. still working on improving that abit.

Not sure: but from what i ehard he gets a crippling graphical problem in that he cant see much/do much and only relogging fixes it. Have never experienced it myself, but it happened to him about 5 times in an hour 2 or 3 days ago. ------------------

Hey, no need for personnal attack, I'm just trying to help here. First I state the obvious (without any superior meaning to it) then we pass to the other level. If you are not crashing in any other game, could be the client sure, could be your connection (some people simply cannot make it work reliable thru wireless router in home no matter how hard they try), there is also the general lag factor. If it happen only in fight, I would assume that's the thing.
When everything start to fly at the same time, the client still need to have all that information UP TO DATE.
(BTW: I'm writing in hope to help everyone that might experience constant droppout, or I would simply write you and eve-mail don't you think?)
So anyway, I experienced dropout lately because I was downloading something at the same time, and windows beeing what it is, (sharing is not that great) maybe the download was taking a little too much bandwith but anyway, dropping and dropping. Stopped download, I was ok. I'm not saying you are downloading, just saying it's something that might affect some people. Maybe the client is less tolerant now to 'loss of contact' with the cluster than before and so thoses with broadband don't see the problem.
How should I know, but surely if you are not trolling, you should accept some reply that are not to the point for you.
BTW: I would never state the clear your cache argument since it never did anything for more than ONE YEAR. Except the folder MachoNet that had some outdate highway and/or market info after the last patch.
Anybody that have problem need to blame himself FIRST. Then realise he is surrounded by other peoples that are humans just like him. |

I rarely CTDed before the Cold War patch.
Now I do often to the point of unplayability. I have nice GM replies which inform me that I should theoretically be experiencing no lag, and that they have no advice for me.
I have no memory issues, no graphics card issues, and no other instability of any kind.

Guess they changed something that my ISP/PC likes and others don't.

I dont like windowed, and I usually do start TS first. But if you forget and need TS open, you might as well hope alt+tab works because either way you need to restart EVE.
I have never once had a problem with alt-tab before the cold war patch.

I am running multiple windowed accounts from a single computer and have not had any problems.
I did flush the cache after I installed the patch. I deleted everything in the cache folder EXCEPT prefs.ini and the settings folder.
If you have not flushed, give it a try.
Good luck with it. I had CTD problems after the Exodus patch for about two weeks. Almost drove me bonkers.

And yet again, does running 'logserver' give any indication to the problem? It's a lot more helpful then you think - especially when you can post a bugreport with a log attached.
Put it this way, a lot more people play EVE then use these forums. That said, if there was a major problem with stability, there would be thousands of people on here complaining about it, and there simply aren't.
I'm not saying you don't have a problem, and I appreciate how frustrating it can be, but it works for the majority, so you have to give CCP the most help you can to track down why it doesn't work for you.
That means using the tools available like logserver and submitting bug-reports - not just posting that it doesn't work.
For posting purposes, I've found the last 2-5 lines of text in the logserver report to be the most usefull, in explaining a crash, as it often contains the error message. You can find a guide to using logserver, here.

The game crashed 3 times for me today and it's been like this since the patch.....Used to do it pre patch as well, but not nearly this much and yes the game has been reinstalled several times, updated graphics drivers, updated motherboard drivers, latest motherboard bios, since in this case, the game not only quits quits to the desktop, but a few seconds later even crashes the whole system and i have to restart....
Problem does not happen with any other game or application at all btw....

Sorry for saying this, but i believe that the truth of the matter is that the beta test was supposed to be over 2 years ago,at least as far as the game not crashing your whole system...Bugs as anoying as they are,are one thing and ultimately get fixed sooner or later, what's happening here is quite another...
Matter of fact,i even if i ran the logserver,i'm not even sure it would work, since this isn't a server disconnect problem or even a CTD,it's an honest to god system wide shutdown that happends in a split second with the screen going blank but the tower is still running for some reason, and also get a repeating sound at times,i also have to restore the active desktop(win 2000)when the system does restart because it gets disabled when the system crashes...
4th crash just happended a few minutes ago btw...

Originally by: Deja Thoris Well I CTD about once every 3 months.

In my case,Eve has always crashed in the last 2 years i've been playing it,be it due to server disconnects, node deaths, network problems,Lag issues, stuck systems, you name it,but the issue was only very occasional most of the time, perhaps once every 2 weeks on average and in even in those, they only resulted in CTD's,not what i described in my last post...
The latest problems however started with the original exodus patch back in november last year, and even then, only occasionally, about once every 2~3 weeks, and no amount of windows 2000 reinstalls, video card driver updates, chipset driver updates, motherboard bios updates, windows updates or game re-installs ever fixed it,and i've learned to live with it as long as it didn't happen more than once in those 2~3 weeks, that is until the latest patch and system wide windows crashes, while only playing EVE,happen daily, which is curious as other applications and games, including much more demanding ones like Half life 2,battlefield 2 among others, play absolutely rock solid no matter what...

Now that is just funny.
There is two guy having big problem with stability, they will unleash on everybody trying to help them and call for acts of god. Now when someone who can really help them post and try something, they accuse him of "openly hostile and insulting interactions"!
Wow simply guys, you are a piece of art. I think you should realise that with attitude like that, you will NEVER get any help in games or in real life. Do you think someone owe you something or what?
Fire away if you want, I'm fire-proof!! lol
Can't wait to see what you will reply!
My faith in free-speech is going slimer each day I spend in the eve-online forum.
Theses guys are not even paid to help you...
No wonder only the stronger devs are the only one that continue to post in the forum, or maybe they are the ones that lost at the short straw. |

Alright, here's the deal. Every single person who is getting regular CTDs, do exactly what I say. Uninstall eve. Delete the Eve directory manually and empty the recycle bin - just get the hell rid of it. Install the latest full version of eve.
Unless you've tried that, you have no right complaining that there's no fix for it because so far I've seen loads of people with CTD issues and such since the patch and this fixed them. I even heard of people not able to log into the game, not able to buy specific things from the market and such. This fixed ALL of their problems and Eve went back to behaving the way it did before they patched. Try it.

Edited by: Rod Blaine on 18/07/2005 02:58:31 The few times I do CTD thats literally the same error I get Infused.
I've tried anything that has to do with any sounds produced by my PC at any time. It accomplished nothing. Checked all drivers, mobo ones, BIOS, memory, whatever...
That error first ocurred with the last major pre-cold war exodus patch. Before that I could run two or three accounts till kingdom come, since then one will crash every so often, and on rare occasions I get full system reboots when just running one client, quoting me the very same error btw.
Somehow that comment about Eve beta being 2 years ago and it being sad that people have gotten so used to ctd's and lag that its been accepted rings true to me...
then again, ive learned to live with it too. _______________________________________________

Well, it's saying that it wanted an integer (1,2,3) and got a float instead (1.2 , 1.3, 3.565767 or maybe more 0.000000E-23 kind of number) so anyway, it warn there might be a problem there.
Then it know that the hex or oct function with theses bad a number are going to result in something very bad, then using theses value, it try to do something sound related and it fail.
Now only a dev would know what's the code at all theses lines...
I'm not sure you doing anything with your sound is going to change anything. Maybe you have a bad sound file, does it happen only when you do something in particular? Like firing a gun or someone around you use a mineral scanner or something that do a particular sound? |

It's a measure of the lack of confidence that people have in the game that they get CTDs like this and accept it as the norm.
ISD have been far from hostile or insulting, you're just being a sulky brat. Since you can't be bothered to help the devs track down why eve doesn't work on your system looks like you're gonna have to live with regular ctds.

Anyway, I have found more CTD issues since patch so I can understand where you are all coming from. My particular problem has been isolated to my wireless network bridge. Basically my all-in-one Netgear Wireless Access Point / Router / 4port hub / firewall etc connects to a wireless card in one of my PC's, which is then bridged to the other machines in my study via a switch.
I found that, even with streaming media going on one PC without a hassle, i experience crashes in both my Eve accounts.
The solution - get rid of wireless and run a net cable accross the loungeroom floor - no CTD's as yet since doing so.
Buggery wireless.

I had that problem. Check how hot your graphics card's getting, and make sure the fan's spinning properly and the heatsink's not full of crap. Eve seems to really enjoy melting graphics cards, moreso than any other game I've came across ;) -- OTO are selling Impel and Bustard transport ships. I never had a single CTD before the patch. Since the patch, I've CTD'd twice within about 10 seconds of warping into deadspace... just long enough to annoy the hell out of whatever is in there with me.
Coming back worrying whether you've still got a ship or not is irritating.
At this stage it's not happened often enough for me to be worried about it to any great extent, but having read some of the accounts in here I'm a bit concerned.
Still... I have a reasonable amount of faith in CCP. They've got a good game here, and I'm pretty sure that they'll get on top of whatever's causing any given problem as soon as they can.

The FMod line comes from (generally) not having sound enabled, It always fill my logs up :)
I have to say though that Nyphur has hit the nail on the head in my opinion. As I said I've had no problems since the patch, but I did have to reinstall completely, and I made a point of deleting the old folder before I started.
I realise this is an emotional subject for a lot of people, but I'm trying to keep this thread positive - lay of the negativity please.

I dont like windowed, and I usually do start TS first. But if you forget and need TS open, you might as well hope alt+tab works because either way you need to restart EVE.
I have never once had a problem with alt-tab before the cold war patch.
Yeah, alt+tab is asking for trouble. The way to do it is press alt+enter to go back to window mode. It might look a bit messed up but you can do a normal minimise this way. Do your stuff, open TS, forum *****, whatever, then go back to EVE press alt+enter and off you go.

Yes, more recent graphics cards run very hot indeed, and the airflow of most cases is designed to cool the CPU, and not graphics cards. I have a NVidia 6600GT - the cooling on these cards is woeful. I now run Eve in windowed mode with the temperature monitor in the background. I have unchecked the 'load station environment' option in Eve's general options, because I found that sitting in the station actually generated more heat than flying around in space. I also take the side of my case off and use a desktop fan to help with cooling on warm days.
Once my card reaches about 80 deg C, I sometimes notice some graphical glitches appearing - which is a warning sign. Not always however. The end result, if I don't minimise Eve, or take some other action to cool the graphics card, is that I will either get a full lock-up (have to do a power cycle to reboot) or the machine will reboot itself (no blue screen, there must be some motherboard safety cutout or something).
This is completely separate to the 'connection to server lost' error that I occasionally experience. Some people get it more often than others. Local internet connection remains fine, but somewhere along the line, something has broken the connection to Eve. Very frustrating and difficult to pin down. By the time you've done a tracert to try and find the possible cause, whatever caused it has probably sorted itself out.
The lost connection error is really bad when the client doesn't realise that it isn't connected to the server anymore. Your ship appears to carry on fighting, and it takes you a little while to notice. Even if you personally aren't affected by these sorts of errors, it's just as bad when your corpmates are. Having to reinvite people to gangs every few minutes, or worse, having the gang leader lose their connection. People not shooting in fights because they've lost their connection: their ship sitting there fat, dumb, and happy, while the rest of you fight a losing battle. Even having your enemy lose their connection during a fight is bad especially in a close fought battle - it undermines your sense of achievement when you kill them if they spent the last minute of the fight looking at their desktop.

I have to launch a special temperature monitoring program and set my fan to max rpms if I want to play Eve. Otherwise after about 30 minutes my comp overheats and shutsdown. No other game taxes my comp so heavily, other games rely more on gfx card whereas Eve really gives the CPU a workout. Maybe some other people are having similar problems? And if I run 2 accounts since the patch my comp overheats even with the extra rpms (this might be coz of summer tho).

Checked all that and it's fine, not to mention the fact that the video card is about 2 months old(ATI X850 XT PE),the problem still happened with the 2 previous cards as well, and in between those 3 cards there have been at least 20 driver updates...
Only thing that makes me believe this is graphics related,is the on the few times the system didn't get totally hosed,ATI drivers have a VPU recover utility that on occasions manages to unfreeze the game and then sends the info back to ATI thru Email....
Another thing i do notice is despite all the cards(ATI 9700 pro,X800 PRO,X 850XT),and those odd 20 driver updates within the last 2 years,at first having an Intel based system, then last year, switching to AMD,is that i still get weird texture flashes on aproach to stations, ever since Eve was released...

Have you considered your Net connection?
I used to have regular CTD's - In my case they were connection lost CTD's and would take me back to the login window. Not a traditional CTD where the software totally closes.
Although my net connection was still alive for some reason EVE decided it lost connection and would restart etc.
Upgrading the firmware on my router solved my problem.
