IMHO, a tank is not something you want to be able to run forever. What would be the purpose of that? You guys fight in neverending battles?
If you are stupid enough to fit a tank in pvp. Atleast look at burst repair and make sure the cycle is not too great. And for that Shield boosters are much superior. I always laff at the uber armour tanks who fail to go a cycle before the poor sod is down scratching his head.
In short. I disagree with you eddz mate in so many ways you old fart. So I'll stop hijacking yer thread now mate ;)

No, I havent, and I'm sure it owns, but thats a dominix, its got more med/lows than any other ship besides the scorp. The thing is, you need to fit an oversized booster before you exceed the amount of boost per second that armor tanks get (well you can fit an amp but we all know that they are a waste of slot on anything besides a Raven). I'd be all for increasing the amount of shield a shield booster boosts if the cap use was increased a bit too, so fitting a same-size booster is finally not crap vs a same size armor repairer. That way we'd get some difference between them, shield would be better for short term and armor for long term. Right now armor is better for both if you know what you are doing, this isnt taking into account the lack of damage mods though.
Also the cap relay nerf is stupid. It only really affects npcing though.

You simply DO not know what your talking about. I can't put it any plainer than that.
A dual rep Mega, with 6 blasters, will take down a 6 Siege and XL booster Raven. No problems what so ever.
You Cannot break my tank I will smash yours.
My shield tanked Tempest would break your tank beofre you could break mine

Tanking is useful for small scale still

I feel like shield tanking is great these days. But about 7 months back when everybody used armor tank it kinda sucked. Now when a battle is solely about dishing out max dmg in as short time as possible i feel that shield tanking is great. Ive gone like 15times solo up vs a geddon in my raven and only lost 2 times . 5pdu's t2+ xl sb t2+ amp+ 4 hards+ 2 hvy nos 4tw. (tackler sold seperatly ). While hp/cap is worse than armor tanking the hp/sec is greater. A t2 xl sb t2 takes 20% less cap than xl c5l. It boosts more but over a longer period of time , for the same cap. That + 10% (new ,great, skill at 5) = 30% less cap than a few weeks ago.

I disagree. A shield tanked tempest with full gyro IIs will beat a armor tanked tempest. A shield tanked vaga with full gyro IIs will beat an armor tanked vaga.
But I do agree with the same-sze arguement. Also, theres a huge imbalance in fitting reqs on plates compared to extenders, dont know if youve looked at that.

ôI don't know how you could ever say that because with 4 PDU IIs in lows and maxed shield skills, I get a passive recharge of 7/s in average. That's way not enought to help at all.ö I bet you like most people are working out the passive recharge wrong. Are you doing shield cap / shield recharge = xxx? If you are thats wrong.
Most ravens with PDU T2 modules have a good 20 to 30 passive recharge to add ontop of the shield booster. 20 solo 30 with gang skills.

yea lets all fill our lows with cap flux coils.
PVPing > Activate XL Booster > ERROR: Cap Booster I Requires 400 Cap to Activate.
Actually, flux coils have a definate usage for a shield tank. Just as 8 stabs have a use for getting your Apoc through a frigate fleet, Bold, unless you log first.
Back in the ancient days of the crumbling Xetic nation I used to run a Raven for hunting Angels down there. 2 PDU IIs, 1 Cap Flux (named) kept my cap up quite nicely so long as I paid attention to my booster. I used 2 boost amps in mid to balance out the huge cap hit per cycle with the shields replaced.
Shield boosting has that major flaw: insane cap hit, forcing a pilot to pay close attention to their cap in a fight, whereas most armour tankers just turn on the repairer(s) and ride out the fight without a second glance. Even Amarr, using cap hungry lasers, can pretty much ignore their repper.
Generally I use smaller armour repairers T2 rather than typical for the ship size (small for cruiser, 2x medium for BS), and except for situations of complete and utter blobbage those suffice nicely.

ôActually, flux coils have a definate usage for a shield tank.ö Now they donÆt, assuming you mean cap flux modules donÆt you end up with less total cap and less cap regen after fitting a flux. Look at you ship specs with no modules then fit 2 or 3 flux modules and watch the cap regen and total cap drop to below the level of having no modules fitted.
With flux modules being worse ten having no module then fitting cap relays or PDS modules are better then flux.
I have yet to find a case where flux modules where usefull.

Of course I do, cause similar to cap recharge the shield/recharge * 3 is only reached at around 30-40%. getting a hard hit means falling below and being above means as well having lots less. And personally I prefer having shields up all the time instead of keeping them at 30-40% (u never not what jumps in next and also it drops the morale of the attacker :))

Not that much imho. Some for baiting yes, some for buying time to get out. But it's more worthwile to go all out on damage. Anyone not going all out on damage is most of the time betraying his partners for his own survival. imho

ItÆs only the lower 10% and upper 90% value that are slow. My main point was the reason shields have less resistance then amour is due to the regen and 30 extra regen on top of a booster can be enough to keep you alive.
1 hard hit does not have a large impact on shield regen. I did extensive testing. Shields spend a lot more time at or near peak recharge them most people realise. But anyway I will try not to post much more about passive regen in this thread. I just wanted to say it sort of makes up for the 10% less resistance over amour tanking. _________________________________________________ Nominate famous people in Eve who had an impact on you. |

A point was made about wanting to maintain a shield tank at maximum, to break your enemies morale, and cause you don't know what's going to jump you next.... If your not willing to ride the low road and let your natural regen work for you then you really can't say your shield tanking to the potential. Like pottsey pointed out, that extra bit of natural regen DOES make a difference, not huge, but every bit counts.
