EVE isn't just too complicated and turning away newbs, it's getting too complicated and turning away old/vet casual players, too. Some of the advanced skills need to only require L4 instead of L5. It's frustrating, and doesn't make sense at all to spend 5-10 days training up a rank1-2 skill to L5, JUST so I can turn around and have to train only 20 minutes to L1 of a skill that builds off of or requires that first one. We should be able to train up the advanced skill starting at L4, then finish off L5 later on when we decide we actually care about that last little 5% that is usually quite worthless (except it's required to get something else).
They way T2 frigs and T2 cruisers were introduced was a mistake, imo. T2 and the "advanced" ship skills are like choosing to specialise in something, so... if a player wants to specialise in frigates, then they should pick out the advanced frigate skill to build off of L4 of the basic racial skill, and specialize. Then the T2 "interceptor skill" and "assault frigate" skill, cov ops, build off that, as specializations.
If a player wants to specialize in cruisers, they should be able to first get the advanced cruiser skill, and then the "Heavy Assault Cruiser" skill to fly T2 cruisers, as their specialty. There's no reason why a T2 cruiser specialist should have to or want to also be forced to specialize first in T2 frigates all the way to L5 before they can turn around and train up a few minutes for L1 of their REAL desired specialty in cruisers.
Frigs & cruisers are completely different, and at the T2 or specialisation level with the advanced skills, they should be completely different. The T2 frigate specialist might just want to have fun in frigs, and have no desire at all to start in on the HAC skill after they reach assault frig L5... well ok, yes, there's nothing forcing them to do this, but certainly the other way around as mentioned above is very annoying & unecessary.
With changing requirements around to have more L4 and less L5, this allows a broader range of old & new players to jump into new or current skills sooner, at similar rates... then later on they all plateau out a bit and the older vet players can go the extra mile & train up L5/L5... while new players back out after L2 or L3 to continue to diversify & train up other needed skills... OR make a choice early on to specialize.
At first, accellerated training for the first month sounds great, to help newbs get started, but this would have to be restricted on a "per account" basis, not per character. Also, this will lead to a lot of "character farming" or whatever one might call it - where people start a new account for 30 days, train it like mad in some speciality, then sell it off for a small fortune. Rinse, repeat. Bad.
Plus, how would the newb of just 31 days of age feel right after this feature would come out, to soon fall behind younger players with twice as many skill points? A bit like crap, that's how.
