I've been part of EVE for years now and given the recent E-UNI publicity I felt compelled to propose this idea I've had. CCP like it or not has a reputation of being "disconnected" from its player base. This isn't how I personally feel but this seems to be the general view. From everyone I've spoken to in and out of EVE it seems to be a general consensus that players want to feel like they have an impact in the EVE universe, to be heard. Well I think I have an idea to help everyone feel more a part of EVE.
So I present a simple proposal to not only benefit the players,CSM, and game but also to be able to put the right spin on public relations which seem to have gotten...messy lately.
CCP takes a small (maybe 5% of dev resources) team. This team comes up with a list of 5-ish ideas that they think they can improve the game with such as: new drone module, Pos work, t2 orca, whatever. They let the community vote (lets say under a week to vote since you cant delay development too long, most skill queues require some sort of weekly login and CCP can advertise that the date is fixed. If you don't vote you don't get a say.) every account gets one vote just like CSM and at the end the new dev team works on the elected idea.
Then the team is completely transparent with the community (lets say a blog a month/2 to month to keep devs from having to review professional posts every day) to keep on how and what is happening receiving feedback mainly from the CSM at this point who are involved slightly more than usual to help achieve a balanced product. This follows from inception to execution with CCP reaping some pretty good benefits.
Benefits: Players feel their choice helped mold the EVE legend. Everyone feels they were heard and can be involved. CCP has an absolute lock on PR to the community. EVE heads in the way (at least a little) that the players want. CCP now has a pretty good marketing campaign.
Not Benefits: This could consume too many resources I'm not sure how much the voting etc would take to set up and execute. (Maybe CSM votes if its too much hassle) Due to such a small team it may take awhile to produce a product. EVE players like to abuse things.
Thats all I can think of feel free to provide feedback, or pros/cons, or "go die in a fire" posts.

Where did you get this idea? A CCP major characteristic is just their strict symbiosis with their playerbase and his ability to talk and listen. Other companies would pay anything for this.

CCP listens more to their playerbase than any other company. heck, mot other games dotn even HAVE a features/ideas section of the board, much less a CSM or actual devs posting in the forums.
heck, ive played some american/korean mmo's where placing an idea in the ONLY forums they ahve is locked by a GM with responses like "the forums are not meant for proposals/petitions" or soemtimes even a blatant "X games does not, nor fo we look for, player input during the design process, we woudl appreciate it if in the future you avoided unneccesary threads on these topics".
compared to companies like those, CCP is practically taking us out for drinks and enjoying a laugh at the pub with us. |

Isn't the core of this idea one of the roles of the CSM? They drafted a document a while before their last summit, submitted it to the community, took on feedback and presented it to CCP. CCP said they took it to heart.
CCP said they were putting POSs on the back burner due to it "not affecting enough of the player base". The CSM gathered support from the community and CCP have explained their previous statement and have pit POSs back on the agenda.
Your idea, while being the very model of a communist fair system, is already in effect through the democratic CSM. MODULAR DRONES

Unless you make voting mandatory at login screen (unable to login without voting), you'll end up with a list of game-breaking proposals designed solely to benefit some particular null powerblock. Thank god CCP doesn't give a damn about CSM. Standings Improvement Service https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=19454 |

since t20 you will not get overt dev-player connection. That running gag still gets brung up since BoB died... I was in bob Part II....(IT)...and some goonie in local wrote full essays in local chat on this crap one night. some people in this game got long memories. And they jsut don't let crap go.
Any dev-player connection, its now covert and its probably in game already. Insert goon-devs joke here. But to be fair. they aren't the only ones with a dev alting it up if so. |

This seems to be the mentality of a highsec player. Having spent serious amounts of time in all aspects of EVE, I cannot relate to the OP. I think CCP does an excellent job of listening to its player base. If anything it's the driving reason why CCP is so successful in a market(MMOs) that is declining. The focus on retaining players rather than pandering to an unsteady income source such as casual gamers. |
