U shure though that they are less powerfull than a 150mm rail gun? "if you wish to live wisely, ignore sayings like this one" -Annonymous

The Dual 150mm Prototype Gauss is a medium weapon and SUCKS. It's completely useless, it uses very little powergrid but it's still a waste. Get a 150mm Prototype Gauss, which is a small weapon and use anti-matter ammo in it.
It's way better than a dual 150 and probably comparable to a stock ion blaster except it uses much much less grid and has slightly better range.
I can hit for 50-60 with the 150mm prototype gauss using anti-matter ammo, with like a 9km optimal, not bad for a weapon with an under 3 second ROF. ------

Since blindly assuming that the fact that Dual 150s were better than normal 150s, I've recently swapped over.
Why?
Antimatter M damage = 12 Antimatter S damage = 6
Dual 150 Damage mod = 0.9 150 Damage mod = 2.5
(I'm just using Antimatter as an example.)
Couple those stats with a tracking speed of almost 10 times that of the Dual 150s, cheaper ammo and equivalent range and you'll see that the Dual 150s are pretty much useless in comparison. If they fired two shots each time that would be something.
I can't really understand why someone would balance it this way. Hey ho. ------------------------------------------------------------ Bulk Paint Lost In Space |

The point of the "dual" railguns is their low cap usage. The Dual 150 only uses 5 cap per shot, the frigate 150 uses 8 cap per shot. If you look at damage per cap the Dual 150 is better, the frigate 150 on the other hand does more damage faster.

I dont believe the 3 cap saved on a cruiser is that big of a deal, seeing as how dual 150's cant be mounted on frigates.

I'm not sure I understand why everyone is so down on the dual 150 rails. I do great damage with mine. It's important to use the right ammo and hit optimal range or closer. These particular railguns seem to falloff rather quickly, which may be the reason for everyone's lack of success with them.

Well, they've got the best damage/cap ratio other than maybe the dual 250mm large weapons, and they've got low fitting requirements.
While they're not the greatest weapon, they will work if you need to be really conservative with your cap, or if you're using up all your power with more important modules, and you cant sacrifice the extra to mount another 250mm gun.
You might say that 150mm gauss would be better in that circumstance, and that might be true, but the damage that a 150mm gauss does over dual 150mm gauss' is fairly marginal, and the dual 150's do it with less cap, and probably most importantly to me, they don't require another type of ammo for you to run out of. It's easy for me to mount 3x250mm's and 1x150mm dual, but not so easy for 4x250mm's on my moa, not without sacrificing stabilizers at least, and the stabilizers + the saved capacitor from not having massive cap drain from the 250mm's.
That said, I still barely touch my 150mm gauss. But it's not because it's worthless, just situational, it's the "lightest" medium weapon, just like the 75mm gatling rail, and the dual 250mm railguns. It's not going to see a lot of use from most of the population, but can be useful.

All the dual/quad versions of weapons are more or less a waste of time. Unless i've missed something blindingly obvious the smaller sized single versions of all these guns outperform them in every aspect except maybe cap and range.
The cap difference has to all intents and purposes no effect because the ships capable of mounting them have much larger cap reserves to start with.
The range differences aren't that huge (i've not checked all the weapons in question so I could be wrong in a few cases) so there is very little practical reason to mount a dual weapon.
They almost all (again not checked every single weapon so i could be wrong on certain counts, feel free to correct me) use more CPU and powergrid, have slower tracking speeds, have a slower rate of fire and do less damage per hit.
There is no conceivable reason to mount a dual/quad version of a weapon if you have the choice, of that much I am convinced. I am also convinced that they need tweaking, I don't see why any frigate mountable weapon should be better at a task than the cruiser or battleship weapon that is also designed for that task, unless its is a deliberate plan to limit the options available to the aforementioned ship classes.
Would altering the dual/quad weapons be a good idea, I don't know. It would certainly require a whole load of balancing.
The other route as I see it was one i've seen posted on the boards, my apologies to who posted it I can't remember but I like it. Limit frigates to small turrets, cruisers to medium turrets and battleships to large turrets. Maybe the weakest weapons could do with a small decrease in CPU and powergrid, an increase in tracking speed for those obviously designed to hit the faster moving targets but I think it would make some of the lower weapons worth using once more. It would hopefully promote mixed up fleets a little more, i've not flown a battleship since beta but i'm hearing alot of them just run the higher end cruiser turrets as they do a better job in many cases.
Well, theres a long ramble from me, pick it to pieces and see if theres anything worth using in it

If anyone who does not want their single 150mm railguns anymore, please contact me when I'm online, since I really like the gun, and fit them on my cruisers as secondary armament. It helps especially when you have a large surplus of small hybrid ammo to boot, or if such ammo is cheaper, and can even be obtained from loot.

For comparison: Thorium S does 4 points fire and 4 points kinetic. Thorium M does 8 points fire and 8 points kinetic.
150mm Railgun: acc: 0.03, ROF 4, damage S x 2.5, optimal 12000, falloff 6000 150mm Prototype Gauss: acc: 0.036, ROF 4, damage S x 3.0, optimal 14400, falloff 6000 Dual 150mm Railgun: acc: 0.0075, ROF 4.5, damage M x 0.9375, optimal 11000, falloff 7000 Dual 150mm Prototype Gauss acc: 0.009, ROF 4.5, damage M x 1.125, optimal 13200, falloff 7000
Two things I've noticed here, while a medium charge may do twice the damage of a small charge of the same type, this is completely lost in the damage multiplier and rate of fire. A medium sized Dual 150mm does less damage, and fires slower than a small 150mm. The frigate level gun also has slightly better range and is considerably easier on the power grid. (16 is a lot less than 80.) It looks like if you can't get the 250mm gauss, there's no point in "upgrading" to medium weapons. Is there something in the combat mechanics I just don't know about?

Well as I said in my previous thread which no one bothered answering. I think the answer is to boost the damage of dual weapons a little bit and give them superior tracking, the same as a weapon 1 size smaller. ------

DMG mod should be 1.5 on the duals (that is what reg 150s are right?) as this will make them have 2x the damage potential, which makes sense, 2x the guns, 2x the damage. Also, the tracking should be more like 1/2 or 2/3 that of a small 150, not 1/4.

I used to use a 2 250mm and 2 dual 150mm setup...I was also dissatisfied with this setup. I thought to myself...what is the only reason to have something that is not a 250mm...the answer is those fast ships that get under the falloff...too close to hit with a 250mm. Now if they are that close...they are bait for the best blaster hybrid: Anode Ion.
So, I use the 250mm's unless I have someone get to 9km or closer...then the anode starts ripping them apart...=) Ensign hyden(Mining & Transport) - Logistics Division - Hadean Drive Yards

Hyden, I totally agree.
Anode Ion/Neutron blasters are awesome.
Gotta get close but it's a lot more exciting than picking them off at 20km :)

Try looking for a Modal Neutron Particle Accelerator, they beat the Anode weapons in almost every way :-)
