Space is a big place, and you are all being caged into one area, your basically owned by other players, fun huh?
So why not all club together and take out these people who prevent us from travelling safely?
Are we going to be chicken through the whole entire game or can we not work as a huge force to destroy these people?
I thought there was going to be some uprising, and I hope there will yet to be one.

Have to admit, im absolutely astonished that players in this game, instead of whining on the messageboards, haven't had the wit to organise a huge alliance and go and kick some pirate ass.
Sure, they'll say that the pirates always jump through the gates when attacked, but then why not camp the destination gate(s) as well? Its not hard to organise. Easier to moan I suppose. And some people seem to prefer doing that than playing the game.

No one seems ready, and by the time they are, the opposing forces will be to powerful, may as well quit the game as there will be nothing to do anymore. At least if we fought back we could knock them down a peg or too, leave them to mature, IMO its game over as the enemy would be too formidable.

People are always attacking the pirates, RUS, Talon, amongst others. Those kind of attacks generally result in large losses for the attackers, and pirates such as m0o are able to quickly replace destroyed battleships.

Pirates are top of the food chain, and it's not hard to see why.
What attributes, skills and modules do you need to become a pirate ? Basically those tuned to combat only. Additionally the training and money only needs to be spent in one direction. Piracy is the best career if you want to rapidly fine tune your applicable skills and equipment.
Someone in a profession other than piracy has attributes and skills geared elsewhere, and their training and money is divided, combat is a secondary option, so they will always be at a disadvantage to a pirate, their only choice is evasion or escort.
Corporations need to be pretty big to afford dedicated combat pilots, those needed to escort, defend or counter-attack the pirates. At this stage in the game most big corporations are going for the "holy grail" of battleship manufacture, they'd prefer pirates to be kept to one side.
In fact you could suggest pirates are their first customers ;)
Give EVE some time to settle, soon you'll see proper bounty hunters and dedicated mercenary pilots who can afford the better equipment on a par with pirates. Hopefully there will be some way of raising SR (other than pirate hunting) but confine within high security empire space where the pirates cannot get to it, so eventually SR has a useful meaning.
I fully expect piracy to be a viable option in the game, look at the expanse of the NPC Pirate Corporations, they have their own empires !

yo gang dude, dont be silly you know fine well if 200 players come piling through your gate and into your home system you would die badly.
You know that if most people clubbed together in this game to destroy you, you would be out numbered. |

Piracy is needed in this game, but so is revolt :] I just find it hard to believe no one can influence a lot of players in corps and not in corps to go and wipe them out.
Its almost as if theres something else, backhanders and such that prevent this.

Sorry Xzarax but i am confused. Who is caged exactly, and where?
So far i have not set out for a destination i could not easily reach. When the time comes for me to reach further i expect a challenge. I do not plan to shoot little npc pirates for the rest of my life. When my skills equal theirs i look forward to a meeting, until then i have enough to do.
The problem is not the strength of the pirates, it is the failure of others to recognise and accept their own weaknesses.
Time is on your side as well as theirs. |

You actually wonder why no one can organize a large consortium of corporations to lay waste to the pirates in deep space? The simple answer is that everyone is safe from 'em at this point unless they travel 0.0 sectors. Everyone fussed and complained about the pirates and CCP took action. Now a portion of you are STILL fussing and complaining about not being able to travel safely in 0.0 space.
Seriously folks -- you've pushed the pirate corporations into a corner out in deep space. Not that I'm a fan of pirates, but what do you expect 'em to do? Roll out the carpet for a gaggle of starry eyed noobs intent on strip mining every fargin' belt out there? LOL!

people need mega and zyd, basically, and they are not prepared to buy it when they can mine it themselves. only thing stopping them is pirates. which IMO should be wiped out by an alliance of players and/or corps. Hence caged in empire space.
Pirates choose to operate where they do, they are not forced to operate anyhwere. Maybe fighting back in force would inject a little fun into the game?
I know I cant do it solo and I know I cant rely on anyone else as it seems to me, pirates have got bottle, the rest are pussies, simple as that. |

xzarax - the only people that really need mega and zyd are the ship builders. A few traders may dabble in it, but not much else. There is nothing that people want (other than cruisers/BS's) that requires meg/zyd.
This means that it's really not worth the effort. Why take a load of risks, and spend a lot of time, to get 2 million isk of mega, when you can make more money trading?
if enough people seriously need mega, they will get it, have no fear.
The masses will start to catch up with the pirates soon, in regards to skills. eg. it takes me a week to learn gunnery 5. In this time someone else could have got to gunnery 4 and controlled burst 3, and maybe a couple of other lvl2-3 skills.
They won't be able to get ahead of a dedicated pirate, but the gap will visibly shrink.
This whole universe is like a ticking bomb right now. Once all the parts are ready, it will be ON, as they say. .

There are two good point mentioned in here, first is the ganging together and hunting the pirates. This is a totally viable option and even thought the Moo and other will be able to replace ships easily it can only last so long if the hunt is relentless and backed by some rich corps. The second is that time is what is needed, if the game is give a chance to get established so corps become familiar with eac hother and information starts to flow between them then hunting pirates will not be so much of a drain.
On a personal not I have much respect for pirates PKers and the people out there who are willing to hunt them. Without these people the game would become Transport tycoon in space. I feel more unrestricted PvP would be cool and motivate people to protect themselves and others. -----------------------------

So, back to the thread...
It's not that a bunch of people can't organize a huge fleet to go take out some pirates, but instead how to actually hurt the pirates once you've gotten there. There are some hard problems to solve:
1) There exists an invulnerability time where you can't lock or be locked after coming out of warp or after jumping.
2) Pirates are inevitably camping gates, and are typically within the 12km "jump sphere".
3) "Destination Gates" don't exist. Are you sure you're actually playing this game? The gates dump you out either:
(i) the last station you visited in the system (ii) another gate (iii) a planet or moon (iv) one of 3-4 random "dead space" locations
Ok, so you organize your giant fleet, but you have to get them:
(i) into the system (ii) into the system that the pirates will jump into, specifically the "dead space" points, which incidentally, can only be reached through the gate that the pirates are camping.
So what do you do? Parade past the pirates hoping that they won't notice and give you lots of time to set up your ambush? Riiight. And even if you do manage to set up the ambush, the invulnerability time on jump will give them plenty of time to recognize that they are being hunted and warp warp warp until they get to a safe anonymous moon. Then they'll just log off till you and your fleet get bored and leave.
How will you be able to organize a large fleet after that incrediably boring encounter? You won't because people don't want to waste so much time with so little reward.
On the other hand, pirates have it easy. They can work alone. They only need to train combat skills, and maybe an indy skill (to pick up loot). They can "set up shop" at whatever gate they fancy. Though, some gates are better than others:
(i) warp drops most players far from the gate (ii) only one primary approach vector (iii) far from any nearby warpable "gathering point"
A good example of this type of gate is the p3en-e gate in Obe.
Once a pirate has picked the gate of his or her choice it's time sit back and pod some slow industrials, loot them, and get rich! From time to time "do-gooders" will come chase you away from the gate, but you can calculate the risk using these two simple rules:
(i) don't camp a gate in anything less than a cruiser. (ii) be prepared to jump away if anything tougher than an indy shows up and targets you.
By following these rules, you can be sure to rob all the indys that come across your path, engage in some completely risk-free combat, and generally have a good 'ole time at the expense of everyone around you. Did I miss anything?

These vulnerable indies you speak of, would it not be wise to hire a couple of escorts to protect them throught the jump gates? Or a corp set up shop in the system before the gate and post adverts seling private protection? I am sure both of these could be of use to both protector and protected. Yeah the indy may have to fork out a few hundred k of isk but to come back safely would be worth it. Plus more fun than just mining veld in a 1.0 system. -----------------------------

It would be ideal if there was some kind of trusted council where corp CEO's can meet to discuss such matters.
someone email me if there is one I can take part in.

2) Pirates are inevitably camping gates, and are typically within the 12km "jump sphere".
Why do people have a "problem" with this ? This _is_ what piracy is, waiting for a target and jumping on it.
Pirate, Brigand, Highwayman, whatever, this _is_ how they operate, otherwise tell me how they do it ?
The traditional way of combatting piracy in the real world is one or more of:
(a) raise the level of law enforcement. (b) scout out the highway. (c) take an escort.
You can still camp gates in 0.1 thru 0.4 space, you just need to be careful who you shoot at and what your SR drops to.

The game mechanics make it impossible to force someone to fight if they really don't want to. You can try to pin a player down, but a smart player will always have an escape route. All they need to do is pop into a station and go to bed for the night. Or, pop into another character in a dif station and go about their business.
If people were forced to travel more often, it would become much easier to go after them. Heck, I can play EVE for a week and never leave a station if I am buying and/or selling equipment. I just get on the market channel and make money by talking to people. That guarantees me 100% safety.

Hey Xane, no need to get defensive, no one has a problem with 'pirates' camping gates, the poster was just stating a fact. Gate camping is relatively safe since you can always jump to a randomized location in the next system.
The game needs to have a way of tracking a player that warped or jumped away, and a way to warp to that player once his/her location was established. With these capabilities it would actually be feasible to organize a hunting party: ideally two fleets, one in the system being camped, one in the system where the camped gate leads. The rest is mechanics and luck.
