Hello there
I'm fairly new to the game and am currently sticking with a standard Bantam miner. However, i have now accumulated some funds and would like to invest into something bigger. The 1st thought was to work towards an Industrial ship, till I found out they cannot carry mining drones.
So, which vessel would you recommend as an upgrade in mining? I already thought about getting a Merlin too, to clear the asteroid fields first before clearing the asteroids with my miner.
In addition to a ship, i need to upgrade to a better mining laser (better than the Mark 1), as it really takes a lot of time. Which ones are suitable and does anyone have for sale?
Thx for the replies Kalyessa

Better off training Minmitar Frigate, and then purchasing a Probe. This is an excellent mining frigate.

I used the bantam for a long time, then I bought an amarr punisher since it looks cool and have 3 turrets (and enough powergrid /cpu to add 3 guns / miners)

Depends on what u want to do with it. All around Ive found the Probe to be an excellent choice. In fact Im mining with it right now. Add a small armor repairor and u can sit with them pirates around u in 0.8 systems no prob. I got 2 arrogators shooting at me as we speak and even though my shields r gone they cant touch my armor as it repairs itself by the time they destroy it. Even Imputors cant penetrate my sheilds if I just sit here mining. Also u can carry 3 normal mining drones or 1 harvestor and 1 reg drone in drone bay with 2 lasers and 2 cargo expanders. I can get 811 omber in one load only takes 6 mins with 2 lasers faster with the drones. Get a badger ASAP though as then u sit and mine with the Probe and store in cargo container till u have a load for the badger then come pick it up instead of makine 10 trips with the Probe.
But if uve saved a massive amount of ISKs then get a Moa with 4 lasers and sum drones!! Thas my next big rig!!

for mineing? abandon thy caldari roots :P
if you're planning on upping drone skill, Galante ships are they way to go. the Vexor and Thorax are the two best mineing crusers in the game, period. no drones? a Omen is the next step, good cargo, etcetcetc...and it's amarr. as for frigites, train min frig 2 and buy a probe, or gal frig 2 and get a imicus. the Caldari suck at mineing, frankly

The Thorax is truely awesome. I am currently using 1 CU Vapor and 4 Miner 1 along with 4 Harvester and 4 Wasp for protection. When I go into high security space I switch the Wasp's for 4 more Harvesters.
Did I tell you I can slay an asteroid really fast?

Bantam isn't a BAD miner - not the best ( Probe and Imicus pretty much share that honor ) - when it comes to frigates but Bantam isn't shabby.
Caldari however are not the best miners, but do have some funky ships for combat etc. Not to mention a sweet pair of indutrials ( not the biggest but IMO the best for weaving through roid fields ) in the badgers.
So IMO you've got two choices.
1) stick to caldari, buy a badger and mine into a can with the bantam then pick up the ore with the industrial. Then save up and buy an osprey. I never had an osprey but I did have the Amarr equivelent and even though it's not as good as the Gallente Exqueor it's not bad - especially as the osprey has a pair of ML's for self defence and 400 drone bay which is ok too.
2) reset to Gallente who are the best mining race by far. Saves buying the frigate skills and I'm assuming you havn't trained much.
3) Use an alt ( as Gallente) for mininig then setup this char as a fighter.

I think the guys post was "whats the best CALADARI ship for mining"
What about the osprey??, not too expensive.its got 3 mining lasers and 4 mining drones!!. and you can take some combat ones just in case.
I would say thats the best mining caladari ship.
Iv got moas, and to be honest, i would rather use the osprey for mining.

Deffinatly the Osprey crusier is the best Caldari miner. Fit it with miners and drones and a sheild booster and u can ignore the pirates. DO not use missiles in high sec space, as the splash damage from the missile can get u killed by CONCORD.
If u like drones though get Gallente ships, they are a must for drone users, the Thorax will happily carry 10 harvestors and 4 heavy combat drones.

Personaly I replaced my Osprey with a moa and have never been happier. I run 4 mining lasers and either combat drones for protection, or improved mining drones and a small emp smartbomb for protection. only problem with the imp. mining drone senario is that your cargo fills so fast you have to constantly watch it in order to keep from filling up and deactivating miners/drones!
Sometimes to win, you have to fight just as mean and dirty as the other guy. Nobody will beat you challenging you to the field of honor for pistols at dawn. They have to slit your throat while you lay in bed, just like you'd do them. - Jash Illian |

If you really want to mine, you have only one choice:
Start training Gallente frig to 4 and Gallente cruiser to at least 1. It won't take that long to do, and Gallente frig is only 40k, and cruiser 500. You can make that much in 30 minutes with a Thorax (Gallente Cruiser 3), and maybe 40 minutes with an Exequeror (Cruiser 1).
The Exeq is dirt-cheap, and is a better miner than any Caldari ship. As many turret slots as a Moa, but with far more drone space. ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |

The Vexor is a awesome ship with 4 miner 1 laser going at once and four cargo expanders you can hold up to 800 cap in them plus having 7 harvester mining drones going and 3 wasp drones protecting me. If I go to a lower level zone I bring along my Wasps combat drones 5 of them will do and 5 harvester drones. I team mine with my corp. and it takes us a few minutes to wipe out an asteroid. While I'm mining they are transporting the minerals to base.
Peace

Edited by: dalman on 24/07/2003 21:49:02 Face it, Caldari sucks.
I'm not mining very much. NPC-fighting is a bigger income.
When I'm mining, I use my Moa with 4 CU-Vapors and 2 Harvester drones.
In high-sec(0.6-1.0) I'm mining on my own with only one hornet drone for protection...
And outside empire space I'm always with corp-members, so usually someone brings an Amarr BS with some Large Beams to take care of pirates.
Since the Moa can take a lot more hits from NPCs, I would aabsolutely say it's better than an Osprey. And while mining-drone-skill is broken, no drone can mine more than 1 unit/minute of Crokite/Bistot. So drones really don't make up for less turrets.
*edit* More for n00bs: Well, I was mining like crazy in the beginning. Heh, I didn't use a gun before I had my Osprey!!! (except tutorial) My roadmap: rookie-->Bantam-->Probe(minmatar lvl 2)-->Osprey-->Blackbird-->Moa-->Badger I joined a corp right after I had bought my Blackbird. So I had no need for a Badger. However, since my corp was almost only amarr, I couldn't fly their indies. So I got myself a Badger.

Yes you can fly any ship in the game with the skill pack and some training time.
I am Caldari and I can fly any cruiser in the game. I can also fly a wide array of Indurstial ships and 2 diffrent types of battleships (Amar, Caldari).
It takes time. Just learn to keep your training going 24 / 7

There are many good mining ships in the game. Each with their particuliar strengths and weaknesses. Gallante probably have some of the best ship well suited for mining. In keeping with the original post. I think the Osprey is the best all around Caldari ship for mining. 3 turrets to fit mining lasers, room left over for a missle defense launcher. Decent drone bay of 400. Has the best size cargo bay of the Caldari cruisers at 450. It is also reasonably priced. With a good set up, you can mine effectively in most systems. You can mine and haul it it. Or better yet, mine in it an haul in an indy. Deside what you want to do and accomplish, now and in the future. Choose your ships from there. I rarely fly my Osprey anymore, but it did the job i needed it to do. It did it very well.
