Yes I wholeheartedly agree with you. Due to RL constraints, the duration of an EvE session for me is usually limited to ~2-3 hours.
Enough to do boring agent missions, but its not possible to engage in good PvP in this framework. Especially as PvP in 0.0 is often made up out of very long waiting downtime.
This game urgently needs sthg like Guildwars' Arenas and Guild battles for the casual players, who make up a substantial part of the Eve player base.
Such arenas would also allow newer players to test their fighting skills against other players of similar strength.
I regularly log on to SiSi's fight club where I can have some sort of substitute for that, but of course its far from perfect. Automated macht-making, some sort of reward ( but then of course also with some sort of risk, i.e. really losing ships), and a hall of fame are needed here.
Of course real 0.0 wars should still be the king, and true rewards should be reaped there and only there. But some sort of quick combat for the majority would help greatly reduce boredom both for veteran players with little time on their hands and especially for new players, who can not yet risk losing their stuff.
one of the great things about eve is that the playerbase can arrange all of those things within the current game mechanics.
speak nicely to an alliance, and promise them a share of the profits, and they might let you use a secure system in their space for the fights. each 'arena' would be a safespot in the system.
set up a corp to take entrance fees, sort out matchmaking, etc.
the BIG lottery often gets a few sponsors. theres no reason you cant either. add the income from them to the entrance fees and youve got your reward (minus commission).
thats a basic outline, within the game mechanics, no dev work required. getting an alliance to agree to it, and actually making it work will be very challenging, but not impossible if you put enough effort into it. ----------------------------------------------
