A short video from CCP that talks about how this came to be: In Development: EVE Online: Retribution 1.1
Nice little feature. Doesn't seem like a huge dev effort was taken away from other things to do it... Adds to overall game. Like it. I'm listening to-áBj+¦rk, playing EVE, eating fishsticks, and I'm cold....this is immersion gaming. |

"where do we roam today? lets see... *spins the camera* that star over there!" Reminded of Star Trek, something like "Second star on the left and keep on till morning", that would be pretty cool. Arguments on time spend aside it its still a really nice thing to add and makes the EvE universe seem even bigger, regardless of the three days spent If you can do what John DaiSho mentioned in three days too I would consider them well spent Second star to the right and streight on till morning was peter pan, not star trek. I was close "Second star to the right and straight on 'til morning. " http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102975/quotesAlthough im sure we're both correct. Yes, the quote was originally from Peter Pan. Kirk used it at the end of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. In addition to many lines from Shakespeare, famous lines seemed to be a running gag in that movie, most of them intentionally attributed to the wrong source. "You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon." - Gorkon "Perhaps you have heard Russian epic of Cinderella? If shoe fits, wear it! " - Chekov "An ancestor of mine maintained that when you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." - Spock "There is an old Vulcan proverb: only Nixon could go to China" - Spock "Guess who's coming to dinner. " - Chekov Anyway, this has been your daily dose of useless trivia. Enjoy!

With the effort it takes to assign stars on each wallpaper for every system in Eve, one must wonder how much dev time went into this... Stars representing actual points on the star map and in space has been in place for quite some time, you just had no way to visualize it before. Adding the lines was a fairly trivial thing (not to take away from the dev that did the work). You mean when the wallpapers got changed? That "some time" isn't much time. And all it means is wasted manhours a few months back, as opposed to last month.
Because the nebulae and starfields were such a terrible change. I mean they look so bad I mean a game doesn't need to be pretty or have an immersion factor at all. |

1) It's not a random pattern. 2) if you want mrer waypoints in your optimization, solve this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_salesman_problem (hint: it's so computationally difficult to do waypoint optimization that they need to limit it so that your computer doesn't explode, and knowing the EVE community they would blame CCP for such an event) |

I second the notion that the route should start from the relevant stargate in the system.
EDIT: And for the record, I love this change. Sense of scope has drastically changed for the better. |

What you do is you create a compromise - a hybrid of two algorithms. First do you sort the waypoints by nearest distance to each other. This can be done with hundreds of waypoints and gives a near optimal solution, which is already helpful. Then can you optimize the first 10-11 waypoints perfectly.
Right now will it not do anything when you have more than 10-11 waypoints and are forced to trim the number down. I often have to go through 20-30 stations to pick up assets from trades. I would be happy if I could just get a near perfect solution for my routes. Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling. |

A couple days in now and one thing is bugging me about the lines.... there should be a line from the first star out to the gate you need to fly out to, otherwise it seems disjointed. Even if that line disappears when you land on grid to the gate you need to take, I think it needs to be there. Without it, it is like starting a book at chapter 2. I mine in EVE because I'm too drunk to fish in WoW.-á |

Edit: For specifics, I was watching for it while doing delve <--> jita runs on alts, most of the systems I saw didn't line up, but I guess it was only a cursory glance before I was like, "Welp, they don't line up."
But as I'm flying now in minmatar space it seems to be lining up every time. Hello again, friends. |

Kinda liked it the first day, after that i was just indifferent about it. Didn't know you could turn it off, not gonna do that but, it's good to have options. Looks like devs put "almost no time" in it to implement, so it doesn't hurt to have, but it's no big deal either. |

March rabbit wrote:i guess you have never looked at guns on your ship too? they (3D models) are useless too I have, but one needs to zoom in very close to actually notice them. I am then always surprised when I read in the patch notes about some weapon not sitting right or intersecting with a ship's hull. This must be really important to some. The 3D models in the info to the guns are also pretty and yet useless. When was the last time you have looked at those?
What I do like and find useful are the engine trails, because they give me information about where a ship is, into which direction it is moving and how fast.
The zic-zac lines in space remind me more of a horoscope than of anything else. The idea of star gates was never one that had any particular 3D direction. One simply jumps from one place to another. This could be jumps across the entire universe and back for all I care. It has just nothing to do with a continuous trajectory in the sense of Newton's Laws, but I see it as a "quantum travel" and so the lines are purely imaginative. Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling. |
