First let me start by saying I played Eve long before it was a MMO. I like the idea what and its about the only space game out there. I have 3 boys and i can honestly say we have all played Star Trek MMO ( fail) , Start Wars MMO ( another fail) and currently 2 World of Warcraft accounts since the games creation. I have seen many MMO's and games come and go. I actually bought this game when it came out but never opened it up. Maybe its my fault but it never showed much in publicity . Since this past month of playing if you call it that ive lost my ships , there's basically no help and all the old timers have no use to explain anything. You have no current books in any stores and it appears to be one hell of a complex game, but impossible for new players to start , catch up, or really want to play. Im sure all the old players will complain and shoot their mouths off. However look at this from a new players perspective. If you buy a game in which theres really no way to get to any level of the older players( in which they are in a field their own doing way way more advanced stuff talking years in real life?) why would you want to play. Granted the game has evolved 10 fold just like world of warcraft ; but people can still catch up and still play with the bigger boys in the game. You have lost other servers and many players and those that do play get by without paying by killing for paid game time? To me that seems stupid. So the only players that stay playing are free players? Ive sat for literly one month skilling only to still be like nowhere near competent to play this so evolved game. Why would any new player plan on paying for years when they can't progress much? I get it for the old timers ;that being said but then again this game wasn't that evolved and players were all in the same boat when Eve first started. Now you have a huge disadvantage to new Players. I joined a corp just the other day and i mean seriously 4 of us were new to the game a few lost everything of what little bit we did have. We are learning from people ; but still many don't want to talk to you even in your own corp. You are like a pesky fly on the wall. This game is going to go down the tubes like the others if you don't change things or give newbies a buff to skill speed or a basic set of skills to start depending on what they want and a penalty to change it? Something needs to change. SO many people I've talked to ,have said buy a character its the only way. Are you kidding me ill quit before i buy a character or have to play 3 years to get up?? Now don't get me wrong its a great game , concept and the best space MMO but just like Star trek and Star wars they lost all their players because of non content . You are the complete opposite. So much content , no help, no understanding, and so far behind that you cannot play with the main group, and years behind ( literately years behind to catch up).So im asking you DEV's please fix this or it will be the end to your great MMO for any new players wanting to join. I cannot logically continuing playing a half dead game with years behind and pay to play when i could just buy any mmo and in a few months be part of the rest of the guys talking and playing. No hard feeling i love this MMO but i would have to buy an account or character to even talk and play with the group on here and no reason since this place seems dead at least anywhere i can go and play ingame.Feel Free to contact me no hard feelings or |

NO. DO NOT TAKE UP AFTER THE OP. USE GODDAMN PUNCTUATION.
This thread is awful. EVE is not WoW, nor is it Star Trek or Star Wars Online. There are fairly efficient tutorials. There are actually good training corporations for players who have a harder time understanding mechanics. Heck, there are systems setup so rookies cannot even be an active target just so these players can get a better grip on the game.
The problem is not that "EVE has too much content, not enough supports, and not enough ways to catch up to older players." The problem is that it takes a little more thinking and dedication than your average MMO and this apparently is a challenging concept to some people. I'm Denzel Washington. |

New Citizens Q & A has many older players who are willing to help out anybody with questions, there's a lot of experience and knowledge being shared in there. New players can and do catch up with older players, each class of ship has a skill cap, specialise in for example frigates or cruisers and in under a year you will have as many SP invested in that class of ship as someone who has been playing for 9 years, you'll be able to use the same modules and weapons to.

Lost other servers? Eve has always been a single server unless you count Serenity which is a requirement of the Chinese Government. The only other servers are for testing purposes and always have been to the best of my knowledge. Your lack of progress and feelings of incompetency are entirely down to you, many newbies are extremely successful in the having fun aspect of Eve. You can hop into fights on day 1, you'll die but you'll have fun doing it.

You simply picked the wrong corp, many corporations are all about helping the newbie find their feet and will go out of their way to make you feel wanted. Newbies used to get a boost to their skill training, it was removed and replaced by considerably better initial statistics.
Content wise, tbh the Dev provided content isn't that great, the best content has and always will be produced by the players, CCP admit this and see their role as caretakers, they provide the framework, we try our best to bend and break it, and they love us for it. Help is out there, you just have to ask in the right places, see my first comment.
As for buying a character? as a newbie that would be a hell of an expensive mistake, it's all well and good having a character that can fly uber pimp mobiles, but the players own skills and knowledge will keep them from exploding, as a newbie you have neither of those and you will lose pretty much everything you undock in.

Eve isn't about instant gratification, if you play Eve you're in it for the long haul. The game isn't half dead, it's about the only MMO that has increased it's subs year on year (except for the incarna mess) and is always growing. You can join in and be one of the guys from day one, most people don't mind that you're a newbie, in fact most will welcome newbies even if it's only as a meat shield, because you'll progress from meat shield to being a useful member of any corporation over time. You have to start at the bottom and work your way up, Eve doesn't give you a cookie and a silver spoon, it steals them from you and expects you to earn them back.

Expanding a bit on what Jonah said.
As he mentioned New Citizens Q & A has a lot of older players who are more then willing to answear questions if you have them, and a lot of infomation can be ready by just checking the stickied threads. Including how to find a corp, since this aspect of the game is a lot more..challanging then say WOW were you just said "raider looking for guild!" *10 invites* (well ok maybe thats a bit over the top but you get the idea). Point is, dont use the one corp you joined as a reason to claim that EVE is on the verge of failing.
Now for "books in stores" which is the other thing i wanted to mention.. If i understand this correctly your thinking the kind of books that explains the gameplay, story and so on? Im basically just guessing here because my knowledge of them stops at flipping trough one for Final Fantasy at a random store while being bored. If this is what you mean, can i ask.. why do you need it as a book? And why would you pay for it! If you take a few minutes and look around you will find so many articles and guides on how to play EVE, all for free! Many people have put hours into writing guides and articles and making videos to help younger players, or vets who are expanding into a new area. Use the information they have provided for you and instead of paying money for a book with (ohh shiny!) pictures that has nothing to do with the guide, take a moment and say thank you to them, and teach other new players what you learned.
Good luck out there, and instead of obsessing about SP and having to be "the best!" in a month, have fun with the game. You will find it becomes a lot more enjoyable when you forget how other online games work, and consider this something completely new Phoibe Enterprises official recruitment thread |

Quote:Since this past month of playing if you call it that ive lost my ships.... May I ask how you managed to do this?
If you lost your ships in PvE you either... - tried to do things that were way beyond your capacity to handle. - didn't do any research before you tried something - did something dumb - some combination of all of the above
If you lost your ships to other players you either... - didn't research the aggression rules - didn't learn from your mistakes - went to places without adequate preparation - used the wrong ships/equipment for the wrong situation -did something dumb - some combination of all of the above
Quote:there's basically no help and all the old timers have no use to explain anything Maybe you're asking the wrong people (sometimes the people who ganked you or destroyed your assets will be more helpful than someone who simply grinds to make ISK). Or your are asking the wrong way. Humor, humility, and politeness (or sometimes the opposite of this) can go a long way in making people more sympathetic to your problems. It also helps if you ask very specific questions and/or know something already and just want clarification and/or show you want to actually learn.
Quote:but impossible for new players to start , catch up, or really want to play.... (snip)... theres really no way to get to any level of the older players( in which they are in a field their own doing way way more advanced stuff talking years in real life?)
...(snip)...
but people can still catch up and still play with the bigger boys in the game.
..(snip)...
o far behind that you cannot play with the main group, and years behind ( literately years behind to catch up) If you look more closely the skill system is actually very intelligently done.
- All skills cap at level 5. No matter how many years you have played the game, you cannot exceed that limit. And lower level skills (ex. [Racial] Frigate) are very quick to train relative to more advanced skills.
- Only a limited number of skills affect any one ship, module, weapon system, and specialty at any given time. Ex1: Someone you are facing has about 20 million SP, but how much of that overall SP is actually combat related. He/she could be a HUGE industrial player with limited combat skills. Ex2: A veteran player has just trained up the skill Large Hybrid Turret to level 5. That skill in no way affects the skill Small Hybrid Turret and thus the veteran will be no better or worse than before at the frigate level.
- Getting a skill from level 4 to level 5 only adds on an extra 2% here, 5% there (exceptions apply). If you simply train up all the skills within a specialty to level 4, you will find yourself flying at about 80 to 90% of the effectiveness of a multi-year veteran with those same skills in that specific specialty at level 5.
- Getting a skill to level 5 is supposed to be a painful train. Many players (yes, even veteran ones) opt to avoid doing it and instead train up other skills to level 4 (because it's faster).
- Ships and weapons have been balanced against one another. Ex: A battleship can potentially instapop a frigate... but the frigate can fly very fast, making it difficult for the battleship's weapons to track, especially at very close range... then again, the battleship can deploy drones to deal with the frigate... and the frigate can shoot the drones down... however the battleship might have a Large Energy Neutralizer fitted to nuke the frigate's capacitor every 24 second... in which case the frigate could use a Small Nosferatu that sucks out capacitor from the battleship every 3 seconds... etc. etc.
tl;dr... - the point of the skill system is to force you to learn the game's mechanics and nuances in cheaper equipment and ships... that way when you DO gain access to more expensive equipment and ships, you know HOW to use them properly.
- more SP is not indicative of a pilot's ability. It just means that the pilot has more options in what he/she can do.
- no one ship is superior to everything in the game. Even Titans, the largest ship in the game, has its Achilles heel; smaller ships.
Quote:You have lost other servers and many players and those that do play get by without paying by killing for paid game time? There has only been one server in EVE. This is actually one of the selling points of the game; "One Universe for all to play in."
The exceptions to this would be the Test Server (which operates under very strict rules and oversight and is often wiped or altered from time to time) and the Chinese Server (which only exists because Chinese law prohibits people from connecting to servers beyond its control or ability to filter).
Quote:Ive sat for literly one month skilling only to still be like nowhere near competent to play this so evolved game. Just because you don't have the "best" skills, doesn't mean you can't do something. Go out and try an activity. You won't be the "best" ... but you'll still be able to make money and/or have some effect. It's better than sitting in station. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Three things: 1. What happened? 2. Your first mistake here was joining up with a bunch of people who knew just as much as you did. Try to find a veteran whose coattails you can ride for awhile and learn from him/her. 3. You joined one of the many "bad" corps out there. Leave it and find another. There is no shame in this and you shouldn't be loyal to people who don't and won't provide help in some fashion.
Quote:This game is going to go down the tubes like the others if you don't change things or give newbies a buff to skill speed or a basic set of skills to start depending on what they want and a penalty to change it? Three more things...
- 10 years of rising subscriptions beg to differ on your first point. - Faster training speed? I will invoke Malcanis Law: "Anything done in the name of 'helping' younger, poorer players will invariably be to the greater benefit of older, richer players." - Basic "skill sets" used to exist... then people started complaining about having all these "excess" skills that served them no purpose for what the really wanted to do and/or "dirtying up" their "perfect" skillsheet.
Quote:SO many people I've talked to ,have said buy a character its the only way. The people you talked to are idiots. Again... you don't need "advanced" skills to be competitive. EVE is more of a "process" game rather than a "get to max level and start doing stuff" game.
Quote:So much content , no help, no understanding, It's almost impossible to quantify and detail "content" that is mostly generated by the players themselves. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Here are two things in desperate need of changes:
1. Your use of languange, specifically the employment of paragraphs and punctuation. 2. Your understanding of the mechanics and history of the game.
I did not read the OP because it was unreadable, but from the other answers I have sussed out that the fundamental problem is that you don't understand how EVE works. You think it's like most other MMOs you've tried, and you're making assumption about EVE based on those other MMOs. It's a bit like assuming you know how Civ works because you've played minesweeper.
Pretty much everything you said was wrong in one way or another, and the way in which you said it was wrong as well. That's quite an accomplishment. Vote Malcanis for CSM8. |

This game is hands down the most complex and has the deepest gameplay I've ever seen out of any games for that matter.

But this is when I start to disagree with you. I've played WoW for 3 years or so (among a dozen other MMOs), I can honestly say this. You got it wrong there, you are not meant to measure enjoyment, competence and competitiveness by the amount of skill points you have, this is actually one of the strongest point in Eve's design.
In other MMOs, the longer you play, the older your character is, the harder it is for new players to beat you, in most cases, it's even strictly impossible for newer players to beat veterans. Say in WoW for instance, a level 20 warrior, no matter how good you are are in playing, there is no way possible to beat a level 80 paladin, the game doesn't allow it to happen, the devs doesn't want that to happen.
In Eve, you can beat the crap out of a guy flying a 2bil isk ship with 50mil SP (that's a ~2 years old character) with a mere 3-5mil SP char in a frigate. In Eve, weeks old characters can make far far more isk than years old characters if you know what to do. You won't see that kind of stuff in a lot of other MMOs. Eve game mechanics rewards knowledge and social interaction above any other games I've played in the last 12 years. In Eve, new players weighs the same value as veterans, mainly because the players are what's important, not the characters nor their skillpoints, this short quote that I've taken shamelessly would probably describe this better : "Every rifter counts".
Quote:I joined a corp just the other day and i mean seriously 4 of us were new to the game a few lost everything of what little bit we did have. We are learning from people ; but still many don't want to talk to you even in your own corp. You are like a pesky fly on the wall. Your problem is quite simple, you joined the wrong corp.
Quote:This game is going to go down the tubes like the others if you don't change things or give newbies a buff to skill speed or a basic set of skills to start depending on what they want and a penalty to change it? Something needs to change. The only thing that needs changing is your perspective, Eve doesn't work like other MMOs.
Quote:SO many people I've talked to ,have said buy a character its the only way. Are you kidding me ill quit before i buy a character or have to play 3 years to get up?? Those people are dumb and you shouldn't listen to them.
TL;DR version : As others have stated, you completely missed the point of how Eve works. You literally can't compare Eve with other MMOs out there, try to learn what you missed, join a corp that appreciates players more than their skillpoints. In short, figure out what Eve's all about. I did actually read the OP, painful as it was. Who the F has internet access in 2013 and doesn't know how to format a post so it's at least readable?
Anyways, I'd like to point this post out to all those "EVE WOULD GET SO MANY MORE SUBS IF" types for whom 300k+ subscriptions are not enough. This is the kind of players you'd get, people who think that "not being able to catch up" with veteran players is somehow important in EVe liike it is in other "leveling" style MMOs. Impatient people that don't like the idea that an mmo would *gasp* make you wait to fly "the good stuff" etc etc.
You "more subs" people only see the potential good that comes from what you want ("ccp would have more money to make EVE awesomer!) but never the bad (ie general MMO gamer's SUCK and would lead to the ghetto-ization of EVE with all their begging for CCP to put them on equal footing with players who have been around longer). |

Although your wall of text is a bit hard to respond to. I'd suggest joining rvb as one of the options for yourself as a newbie.
Be forewarned we are mostly a PVP corp so you will need to drop/join the alt corp to earn isk. And we will gladly explode your ships when you undock them. But it is a place where you can be effective even as a relatively new player and see a variation of ship v. ship PVP that's available in EVE.
The other options would that you might want to look at are EVE-uni and Brave newbies inc. |

I have seen many MMOs and games come and go. I actually bought this game when it came out but never opened it up. Maybe it is my fault but it never showed much publicity.
Since this past month of playing if you call it that I've lost my ships, there's basically no help and all the old timers don't explain anything. You have no current books in any stores and it appears to be one hell of a complex game, but impossible for new players to start, catch up, or really want to play. I'm sure all the old players will complain and shoot their mouths off. However look at this from a new player's perspective. So many people I've talked to, have said buy a character its the only way. Are you kidding me? I'll quit before I buy a character or have to play 3 years to get up? Now don't get me wrong its a great game concept and the best space MMO but, just like Star Trek and Star Wars they lost all their players because of non-content. You are the complete opposite, so much content, no help, no understanding, so far behind that you cannot play with the main group, and years behind ( literately years behind to catch up). So I'm asking you developers please fix this or it will be the end to your great MMO for any new players wanting to join.
I cannot logically continuing playing a half dead game with years behind and pay to play when I could just buy any MMO and in a few months be part of the rest of the guys, talking and playing. No hard feelings I love this MMO but, I would have to buy an account or character to even talk and play with the group on here. There is no reason to buy a character since this place seems dead at least anywhere I can go and play in game. Feel free to contact me no hard feelings.
Put the op into a more readable format. OP pretty much all of your problems could be fixed if you found a corp you like. This post was loving crafted by a member of the Official GoonWaffe recruitment team. |

I had to stop reading right there.
I'd never played an MMO before. I downloaded the game, ran the tutorials, asked a lot of questions in rookie chat, asked questions in the new player forum here.
It seemed every day I was turning down several invites from new player friendly player run corporations that were looking for new recruits. The corp recruitment boards are still full of corps looking to recruit and train new players. I read the internets, talked to people, payed attention.
I had no trouble picking up the game.
Heck, it is even easier now that it was when I started. Now they have ISD's, official volunteer helpers, right in the rookie chat. Now you get eve mails pointing you to all kinds of helpful info and links. Now you get pinged by a CCP employee asking you if everything is working out well for you.

OP, as many have said, it is important to find a good player corp. I agree with you about documentation, much of the Wiki is out of date and ought to be updated, but there really is a great deal of information available if you look for it.
My corp has new players and 10 year vets. Our new guys are not 'behind' because of a lack of skill points. They enjoy nearly all aspects of the game, operate in low, high, wormhole and occasionally null space. In a recent corp t1 frigate tournament, one team of new guys trounced the grizzled vets thanks to creativity and great tactics.
The point is, much of this game is what you make of it. It can be difficult and frustrating at times. And yes, the learning curve can be a bit much if you are not around helpful people, but it is a hill worth climbing.

Started a year and a half ago... now own every sub capital Pirate and navy issue ship, nearly every T1 subcapital ship, and a number of T2 frigates, have something like 14 plex stockpiled...
I did have a bit of help - I started with a 21 day trial invite, and back then if the invitee used a plex, the inviter could still collect his reward. So I had 51 days of free game time to start. I managed to grind enough missions to plex in that time, I got a bit lucky early one when some noob that scanned down a deadspace complex was asking for help in local, ended up scooping 2 c-type items for roughly 250 million ISK, and I paid the other guy a mere 65 million for his share and he was happy.
Joined a corp, corp mate gave me use of a Nightmare, got into incursions, made lots of ISK. Incursions got nerfed, I got T2 guns and involved with a better incursion community... today I made 400 million isk in 3 hours...
I've given others usage of my faction battleships... There are ways to get ahead... just try mission running at first, then get a battleship, then go to TvP, run some incursions - the premier group PvE activity in EVE - its easy to plex an account running those... from there, train your skills, upgrade your fittings, get a better ship, and join a more elite community for even more ISK.
Save up, train up, and buy yourself a carrier (which I'm about to do - to finally make the step up from battleships to capitals, even though carriers aren't much more expensive than Pirate battleships, and I have several pirate battleships) or a dreadnaught - now you're wielding one of the principle arms of nullsec and low sec aliances. Hopefully, by now, you've made some friends...
You can get ahead, you just have to do it right, and meet the right people |

I started playing at the end of November and I like Eve BECAUSE it's hard. My rule #5: Improvise, adapt and overcome. Try that. If I wanted to continue playing an instant gradification game, I'd go back to WoW, or Starcraft, or Diablo 3, or LoTR, or.... get the picture?
I tried a nullsec corp and found it not to my likeing. Now? I mine and run missions. I learn something new every log in. Sometimes I ask, sometimes the new knowledge finds me. Just yesterday I found that if I'm not careful before I shoot I can, and will, destroy the Retriever my other account is flying. Kind of sucked. But I learned from my mistake and wont do it again.
Be safe out there, Whipple

I read your post... ...really, all I can advise is a couple of things.
1) If you are going to quit so easily, then this might not be the MMO you seek. 2) You get out of it what you put into it. If you quit, the game isn't going to beg you to stay, it will quit on you. But if you dig your teeth in, you can actually be rewarded in a myriad of ways.
The choice is yours, ultimately. Might I suggest a few sites for you...

The fact is that you are approaching Eve like a themepark MMO, which never works in this sandbox environment. The truth is that a new player with 3-5 million SP can kill a player who has been playing since launch if he thinks about his attack and makes it happen. I have flown with RvB and in that the newbies kill older players regularly. You can make billions of Isk as new player by working the market if you are smart.
However in the sandbox there is something you need to realise: YOU MAKE YOURSELF LEVEL. The only thing holding you back is an idea. You say that you have no way to make yourself level to older players. In what way? How can you say that when you have no idea what skills they have trained. You might be more than a match in the area you want to beat them. I've seen 3 or 4 day old characters tackling players who started in 2003/2004 thus allowing them to be killed. I've seen swarms of noob ships take out ships worth millions of isk (goonswarm back in the day for example).
A mindset is all that is between you and 'being level.' In other words it's on you to make yourself equal.
Also just to address some things you have said that are either misinformed or just flat out ignorant: You didn't play EVE before it was an MMO, as it was always an MMO. The other games you mentioned are nothing to do with EVE as they are themepark MMO's not sandbox ones, so experience in them really doesn't help you. There has always been only one server (so no they haven't 'lost servers'). Buying a character isn't the only way to become 'equal'. Its just a quick way to get into ships you want to fly.
And finally EVE is not 'half dead'... That statement is amazingly bad. EVE has been holding its numbers nicely since the issues in the Summer of Rage and the Jita Riots were addressed, increasing even. There is more interest in the game now that ever before and it will continue to run for years to come (touch wood).
It's probably already too late for you, as you seem to have made your mind up about what you want to do, but you should really take a breath and learn to adapt (I seem to be saying this a lot lately), because that will help you succeed in EVE more than SP or even ISK. |

A large concern of yours seems to be that you can't catch up to other people. What you don't seem to realize is that at some point training new skills doesn't result in much benefits while creating an even more expensive clone to insure.
Not sure you understand the 'buy a character' thing, either. This isn't WoW, you don't go buy a character from gold seller. You find one on the forums: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=277 |
