First, the reverse engineering skill should be available for purchase. Items which are available for tech 2 upgrading should be able to be researched. If you reverse engineer a Moa you should have a established percent chance of success. A 5% chance on a ship would make sense to me, however, CCP can balance this with the time needed to reverse engineer plus the percent of success. If you are successful you would recieve a new blueprint in you locker for an upgraded Moa to tech 2, which could be named whatever CCP would like to call it. Unsuccessful reverse engineered ships would be destroyed. Perhaps if CCP felt charitable, you could recover a certain percent of the ships original mineral value.
Here are the advantages.
1. Increased demand and continual demand for tech 1 ships.
2. Hoarded minerals in lockers would be used and minerals would continue to be recycled.
3. Increased demand would increase ship prices and profits.
4. Tech 2 blue prints should have either no copies available or a very limited number of copies or risk to destroying the original blue print when making a copy.
5. There would be a meaningful reason for scientist.
6. The increases in tech would be player driven.
7. All corporations would have access to developing tech 2 blue prints but it would take significant effort and resources.
8. There sure would be a Tech race:)

Cool ideas.
Although, anyone with a brain will not be making copies of his BP if it the only one in the game.
But this doesn't cover people who have wallets for heads...
.

I think it would be nice to have some sort of system in the game to be able to trade "non-standard", i.e. not sanctioned by SCC, goods in the first place.
And I mean _trade_, not just sell to Agents.

Tech II items are already in the game, check out Power Capacitor Relay 1, they are on the open market.

They should give all the old beta players something kewl, like a mining laser or somptin.

Yea, CCP should give all beta testers something cool...I mean you guys caught all those nasty bugs....
