Eve's PVP death and resurrection system is far and away better then other MMO systems *cough* WOW *cough* currently out there.
But if there were no such things as medical clones, when you die, you reroll another character and start from scratch.
Would your play style be different? Would you be as willing to jump in your ship and fly into battle as readily as you do now? Would you be willing to gank that Mackinaw mining ice? How much of a risk would you be willing to take?
If there was an option to play with a hardcore mode given at character selection, would you choose it? Would you choose it if there were say a 3x skill mulltiplier?
I have played many MMOs over the years and the uniqueness of Eve's system seems to provide the almost perfect sandbox atmosphere that exists today. I was just pondering how things would be different if dead meant dead. |

Because having a game where some skills take months to finish and if you die, welp, do it again, makes total sense /sarcasm
If you want EVE to be like that, just dont update your clone. |

I have played such hardcore modes, but I think it is just an excuse by the game makers for not having a deep and thorough development path for your characters in the first place. It is then fun at the end of one's path to risk it all and to lose it in a freak mishap so one can start over again.
It only works when a game's mechanic is simple. Then it is a blast. Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling. |

I'm not suggesting they change anything. I was posing the question if clones didn't exist how would that effect your gameplay. |

I'd expect the outcry for a pure PVP server, by both PVP'ers and Carebears alike, to drive CCP's business strategy on such decision.

Seriously? You're asking this? Noone is going to invest potentially years of training to lose it in a fight. Noone! The only way that would work is a hardcore P2W system, not PVP.

You mean if Eve was run face-to-face in an abandoned warehouse, ala Fight Club? That kind of hardcore? No.

Hell, people do it in real life "PvP" every day. Though real life *is* notoriously P2W. |

Would make grinding skills rather pointless wouldn't it? Not to mention, 0.0 would become a ghost town.....Who's going to take a chance on losing a 100 mil sp character in his SC?

This doesn't really work for games beyond a certain complexity. There are just too many situations where you could lose your character for good and it stops to be fun after a while.
EVE has a pretty good balance in this respect.

Nope, absolutely no fun to grinding up the same skill over and over and over again.
A few games have tried it and ultimately it only attracts a very niche set of players and they've ended up having to scale it back to stem the bleed of players. I think DayZ is about the only game (mod) to make it at all work. |

Jovian space.
CCP will open up Jovian space, and by Jove, they've developed a region wide field that blocks the ability to transfer consciousness via pod technology. Big warnings in the gates before you enter Jove space.
Then pilots find that there are resources in Jove space (and only there) that are needed to produce some amazing new T3 ships. BPOs for those ships and components also only drop in Jove space.
Truly epic tears ensue. Loners will try and sneak in for massive profits, long hated FC's/corp mates will find themselves prodded by friendly fire when huge fleets try to control space long enough to get crazy rich. Epic. |

I do not think that word means what you think it means.
I'll even elaborate: "hardcore" in this context means "permanent death"

You bet I'd play. I'd skill up 14 hour arty thrasher pilots, fit them out dirt cheap, and suicide gank people's pods, shuttles, then pods, anything just to kill them. Once me, and the other heros of eve had suicide ganked enough of the 'hardcore' mode players to create a critical mass, causing them all to quit, and ccp to undo the function, bringing back eve to the way it is now, I'd go back to my main characters, and enjoying the game. |
