From hearing other people's experiences and after reading various threads here it seems to me the POS market is currently oversaturated and it's hard to make it worthwhile. Being a newcomer to POS I'm wondering if there's any niche in the market to be found where still money can be made. I'm currently looking at setting up an operation in 0.0 run by myself and getting the POS to produce processed materials at most. I checked the market in Jita and there it seems Dysprosium and Promethium are relatively scarce, so if I get lucky enough to find a moon that provides one of these, will that be a good start for someone in my position?
And is there statistic available listing the rarity and general market demand of the various metals?

The market is currently a disaster area. If you start a POS you should be prepared to make absolutely no return on it for clear of a month.
The markets are static, and 'stuck' - trading is very limited, so stocks are building and prices are falling as people dump stock at a loss because they _need_ the cash to keep operating.
That's not a good market to be starting a business in.
You may well find you can buy a second hand POS, for a 'reasonable' price, and get started there.
I'm not going to say you can't turn a profit, merely that it will a) be a whole hell of a lot of work to find a suitable moon - promethium and dysporite _were_ the most valuable and rarest, technically they still are, but there's still overproduction going on. b) quite a lot of work to keep running - a small tower takes about 20mils worth of stuff each week, and about 10km3 of fuel. c) no guarantee you'll actually be able to sell your production anyway.
IMO the only reason to consider opening up a starbase at the moment is for reasons other than harvesting - as a base in a low sec region, with refinery and storage facilities to make ratting/mining easier.
That's not to say it can't be done, just that it's really getting very 'competitive' at the moment, so profit margins for the work involved are getting squeezed.

The market crashed the week the patch came out. I have already taken down all my POS's and do not expect to put them up anytime soon. I have over 2 billion in moon minerals and reactions that will probably never sell.
Advise, dont bother, you will just lose isk. Fluf CEO Elite Academy |

There are few parts of the market not in oversupply. Currently only Ferrogel and a few other minor reactions aren't in oversupply, and some rarer raws. -- Proud member of the [23].
Want your POS to make money? Call me up. I've designed POSs that make upwards of 50m a day. |

Best reason to get a pos is not for profit but for defense. Gives you a locale to rat and mine from and refit your ships. Gives you sovereignty if you're part of an alliance. In a big war having a friendly pos to base out of is a comforting feeling.

Thanks for the replies. I was already expecting the economical side of it to be looking grim so now I'm definitely planning on using the POS for other purposes as well, mainly mining and having a base of operations for doing complexes. I do plan on moonmining too though, but I''m just going to treat it as a side activity, or investment and stockpile the materials for later. Though so far I probed near two hundred moons now and still haven't found any interesting material, the best I came up with was Vanadium.. but I guess I just have to keep on looking.

how much of that 20mils worth of stuff do you have to get outside your system if you have an icefield already there? Money wise this is a non-issue as 20mil is just a few hours in a munnin away. How much is 10km of fuel and where do you get it?
Yah, I haven't done much with POS since exodus beta... hehe.

Yah, I haven't done much with POS since exodus beta... hehe.
A small tower uses: 168 Enriched Uranium at 168 m3 1008 Oxygen at 1008 m3 336 mechanical parts at 336 m3 336 coolant at 672m3 168 robotice at 336m3
Ice products: 14280 isotopes at 2,142m3 4872 Heavy water and Liquid ozone (assuming max load) at 1,949 m3 each.
If you have appropriate ice nearby, your supply lines are improved. However you may end up spending a fair amount of time mining each week. If mining just racial ice, you need 48 blocks for isotopes, but a further 147 blocks to fill the HW/LO requirements. (yield per block is 25 LO, giving a total required of 295 blocks)
If you've access to glare crust or dark glitter, you need 10 blocks of that to fill both HW/LO requirements. (Glare crust and Dark glitter produce 1000/500 or 500/1000 of HW/LO respectively).
So yes, if you have a belt in system, where there is both racial ice and one of the 'good' sources of HW/LO then you can cut down hauling a great deal. A refining array works at 100% yield for ice. 2,520 m3 of your fuel is only available from various sources in empire. The rest can be mined locally (if appropriate conditions prevail)

I wont retype my other Post.. but In summary, If you are doing it to make ISK, probably not. If you are doing it as part of your enjoyment of the game, then I love it.

To make isk, forget. I just brought down all my POS's. As a cheap outpost, they might be allright, but it is a real job to keep them up an running.
