Edited by: Mercy on 22/07/2003 11:09:44 For the first time, I've done some serious NPC pirate hunting.
In my Maller, I took out four Serpentis Terrorists (20k) and two Serpentis Chief Protectors (50k).
The two 50k pirates, flying Moas, dropped; . 200mm Reinforced Titanium Plates I . Basic Magenetic Plating . Basic Reflective Plating . Indirect Scanning Dampening Unit I . Iron Change M (100) . Medium Capacitor Booster I . Partial Power Plant Manager: Diagnostic System I . Passive Targeter I . Tungsten Charge M (100) . Ship Scanner I
Basic armour plating from a 50k pirate in a Moa?
(The Partial Power Plant Manager is a souped up Basic Power Diagnostic System.)
The four Terrorists dropped; . Bloodclaw Light Missle I (10) . Dual 150mm 'Scout' I . M-12 Standard Launcher I . Medium Armour Repairer I . Tungsten Charge M (100)
The 'Scout' being a 150mm unit and so player demand is low.
This is a joke. Why should I hunt high end pirates, being webified and scrambled, when I can get all of this loot killing 8k and 6k pirates in 0.5 security systems?

I am not trying to be too critical but aren't you rather treating this as a traditional MMOG with its "mob" monsters ?
I was under the impression EVE was a little different than most MMOGs, for a start the levelling system is innovative, I don't see the "bigger monster = more loot" concept as central to EVE either.

Good lord, I only came out of the biomass vat yesterday, and I'm bored out of my skull with pirate loot threads already.
You could have saved a lot of time and effort by reading the various other loot-type threads.. -=-=-=-=- "Gargamel alone is best" - Bill Gates |

180k in a few minutes.
There was too much loot and it was destroying player manufacturing. Why should a fighter ever buy a single piece of equipment from a manufacturer when he can get dozens of medium turrets and at least a couple of special (better than standard) turrets as well? Rare drops were common (a contradiction in terms). IMHO pirate drops should be worse than manufactured stuff in most of the cases (as is the case in games like DAoC) to stimulate the player market. Even with the new loot tables (drastically reduced number of dropped items) fighters can continue to be selfsustained and flood the market with stuff that manufacturers could otherwise provide.
Naturally people whine and complain now - as always when something that was served on a silver platter is taken away. Nonetheless something *has* to be done to make manufacturing of stuff other than ships worthwhile.

I can earn more mining, I think, without the risk of loosing 25m worth of cruiser and equipment.

I'm still hunting in 0.2 area max...And as I've seen what done the last patch, I kept my money to buy a bestower for mining, as obviously I'll never receive enought from pirate loots... Since last patch, I'm not even able to take another miner I I always got stupid loots or smartbombs... 90% of my hangar is full of basic stuff. The last 10% is ammo, almost 10 interesting items I cannot fit on my punisher (one of them being a 150mm railgun ) and almost 10 smartbomb... Now I stockpile minerals doing some ninja mining in a 0.2 belt...I hope I'll earn enought to get my cruiser...
Loot table will e reworked in the next patch...I hope that means : -tech 2 items or -better loots and better distribution...
Currently it's even more interesting to move to 0.7/0.8 space to hunt weakest rats and earn (that's true...a friend got it) a CU vapor from them (\_/) (O.o) (> <)=Oveur (proof) "Jumping 50 systems I can like, have sex 150 times during that period" |

Quote: four Serpentis Terrorists (20k)
Now this is interesting, you seem have found some pirates that don't exist. Guristas Terrorists YES, Serpentis Terrorists NO.
Quote: two Serpentis Chief Protectors (50k). The two 50k pirates, flying Moas
Were you even there? At ALL? Rule of thumb for you: Thoraxes = PRETTY, Moas = UGLY. Serpentis Chief Protectors = Thoraxes.
And no, good loot is not guaranteed to drop regularly from any bad guys. What you might have got from the terrorists (from EVE-I): 150 Proto Gauss, V-M15 Multi-spectral Bracers And from the chief protector, all sorts of nice crap.
But you killed 6 pirates and you decide to come on the forum and moan about the loot? Good loot is good because it is rare. If every1 had one it wouldn't be considered so damn good, or sell for so much. Go and kill 50 or so pirates and then you can come and moan.

<<I am not trying to be too critical but aren't you rather treating this as a traditional MMOG with its "mob" monsters ?>>
Are there non-traditional MMORPGs with dangerous monsters which have no meaningful reward for killing them?
<<I don't see the "bigger monster = more loot" concept as central to EVE either.>>
Surely, if you have a deadly monster and a puny monster, and they offer exactly the same reward for killing them, no one in their right mind will try to kill the deadly monster?
In which case, the deadly monster - what's the point of having it in the game?

I expect you shortly will find other people telling you they do exist.
<<Were you even there? At ALL? Rule of thumb for you: Thoraxes = PRETTY, Moas = UGLY. Serpentis Chief Protectors = Thoraxes.>>
The Nullifiers are Moas and are 50k, which is why I ended up looking at the wrong entry in the data. I had two fights with what I think was the same Nullifier, which disappeared from the belt when I came back the third time - at that point the two Chief Protectors were present.

"Russian roulette does not appeal.

That's fine, it simply means fighting the high-end NPC pirates isn't for you.
For the risk/reward combo.. dunno, PC pirating or mining/trading through the 0.0 space maybe?..

Don't you get more bounty ISK and more Security Rating increase with a deadlier pirate ?
These are the core principles of EVE, not amassing huge piles of unsellable loot like other games.

<<The reward is the now picked clean roid belt which you can mine at your leisure :)>>
Sounds good, but I've heard a lot of horror stories about instant respawn, being stack webified, not being able to warp because of being "hung up" on a missile in the same way as a station, etc, etc.
I actually encountered one of the "dead zones" today, and I only visited three belts.
I warped in, and nothing was there. I looked around, there were three or four asteroids way off over to one side of the belt center.
So I warped out, figuring something was wrong - and as soon as I began to warp, all the pirates suddently became visible.
I had indeed been heading towards three tough pirates without being able to see them at all.
If I had not read about this bug in the forum, I might well have been killed by the game.
Anyways, mining isn't really possible - I'm on my own and even if I wasn't, there are too many blockades to worry about.

<<Don't you get more bounty ISK and more Security Rating increase with a deadlier pirate ?>>
I can earn more, and with almost no risk, mining.
If I hunt pirates, I earn less, and at far greater risk of loosing the 25m invested in my ship.
As for security rating - it goes up so slowly anyway, and what use is it?
<<These are the core principles of EVE, not amassing huge piles of unsellable loot like other games.>>
But...I AM amassing huge piles of unsellable loot. All I get from pirates are normal pieces of equipment. I can't sell that at all. I recycle it.
I'd love to amass even a small pile of sellable loot!

"I don't think much of the idea of reading every thread in the forum, regardless of it's relevence to my current activities in the game."
I never intended that you read *all the threads* Perhaps just the ones with 'Pirate loot sucks' 'New pirate loot', 'I've been looting pirates and all I got was this lousy armour mod'. There's loads of them. Serious.
And I'd be surprised if you got anything worthwhile from 6-7 pirates even before the loot change.

<<I never intended that you read *all the threads* Perhaps just the ones with 'Pirate loot sucks' 'New pirate loot', 'I've been looting pirates and all I got was this lousy armour mod'. There's loads of them. Serious.>>
My point was that why should I be reading a particular set of threads which have nothing to do with what I'm doing in the game?
I had no interest in NPC hunting, so I didn't read NPC hunting threads. I have no interest in mining, so right now, I don't read mining threads.
For me to have read the threads you're telling me I ought to have read, I'd have to be reading all the threads in the forum - why on earth should I be reading that one particular extra set of threads on piracy, when it had no interest to me?

oh, come on.
And if you're not a pirate looter, why should it even matter?
I will admit that a search fcaility would be nice, and may stem the tide of all these repeat threads. -=-=-=-=- "Gargamel alone is best" - Bill Gates |

I think you've lost the thread of our argument.
You are right that those threads are relevent to me. Those threads have however been and gone, and I did not read them when they existed, because I was not NPC hunting.
You said I should have read them. I said - why should I read threads which are irrelevent to me? when those threads were available, I was not interested because I was not hunting NPCs.

Just the other day I was discussing this game with a programmer friend of mine. One of the ideas he immediately hit on was "if he had access to the game's database" he would manipulate the situation so he could make a profit on Ebay. Namely he would make the game so it wasn't terribly profitable to do anything. Then he would find ways to generate ISK and high end items which he would then sell on Ebay for a real profit.
I really wish I hadn't talked to him now. Because it seems like such a likely scenario. It clouds my view of the game. Think about it for a few moments. The market and Trade Routes are very rarely profitable. All the valuable ore has been made inaccessable to all but members of the most powerful corporations. Pirate bounties and loot are a complete joke now. And Industrial types have been completely ruined by the prices for Factory slots, low demand for thier items, and the complete lack of any way to improve thier products.
If these things don't change. This game will never really succeed. The reason is found in basic human nature. We like to be rewarded for our efforts. Games like this are very enjoyable when we can experience a greater reward than we do in real life. I guess the exception to that rule is the hard core role-players who enjoy being able to "do things" and/or live in a way they cannot in real life.
Since these facts are recognized by other companies. They set thier games up so that starting players make progress rapidly at first. Then the risks and rewards rise proportionately at you spend more time. This game doesn't have that type of structure. So it's not really that fun being a n00b. And when you work your way up to say "flying a cruiser". You expect more rewards!
Problem is CCP doesn't seem to want this game to work that way. I think they don't have a really clear idea of what they want thier gameplay to be like. Either that or they have imported some "game-play expert" to tell them how to change things. But in either case it's just not working. The game is more about frustration and futility than it is about reward.

okay, we got some crossed wires.
I'm not having a go at you for not reading threads weeks ago.
I was just saying that this was a common issue, and that: a) if there was a search, or b) if there was a post on the front page of the forum, then adding your voice to that one would be better than starting a new one.
There was one at the top of the patch review forum when I posted the original comment, and that is also the reason why I posted that comment, as I had just come from replying to the other thread.
Anyway, no harm, no foul. .
