Ok I have a few corp mates that play Guild wars and i have had a quick look on there webpage and can get the game for 18 quid and i know u dont pay monthly fees which all sounds good.
But what is the game play like? I have seen people say WOW is just boring and u just grind away to get anywhere, but is Guild Wars like this? How does Guild Wars compare to EVE, i know its people running round pvping/npcing but can i do what i want when i want, do i have to kill stupid amounts of things to get anywhere etc?
Any advice would be much appreicated. ----- Trixy says "Keep ur friends close but ur enemies even closer" -----

Edited by: Layrex on 16/08/2005 10:58:51 I have it, played it for a day and gave it to a friend. It's not really an mmo more just an online rpg.
It's quite similar to most fantasy rpg's. Beautiful to look at, boring to play (for me).
wow is much better. ------------------------------

Actually played GW for 2-3 weeks , finished the story line in a week.Fantastic boredom took over.Joined a 'Guild' fought pvp(extraordinarally repetetive).Left game for a month..came back and found out I was the only one left in guild. But I got the Guild Hall .
Haha considering i contributed 10k gp and my GL 50k gp for the guildhall i got-myself a baragain.
Honest opinion as well to many kiddies on the servers.

Acctualy there not THAT much grind in GW. As the max level is 20... and you get most of the XP from the storyline missions (which are acctualy interesting the first couple of times you run through them). And if you havent reached level 20 by the 18th sotryline mission it gives you it anyway...

I have played and still do play Guild Wars. First off IMO nothing can compare to EVE as EVE is the best Online game ever. Thought GW does have alot going for it. It has nice graphics a very interesting story line. It also has PVP & PVE. I'm not gonna deny what the others above say yes it does get boring after a while but all you do is go play some EVE and come back later and it is fun again. There is a big patch otw for Guild Wars which is gonna add new lvl's for players who have finished the game and lots of other interesting elements to the game. IMHO i would say get itas it has kept me busy and entertained when i dont play EVE. And there is quite a few EVE players that play GW that i have spoken to

i play GW. I use it as a let off some steam, have some fun, quick type of thing. Similar to what i used to do with ut2004.
I actually quite like the pvp, shame there are so many little kids running around tho. -----------

It's a nice game, very lag-free and best of all it does not have elves.
But it does get a little repetitive.

I'm a RPG freak, love almost every one of them. But Lineage II is less boring then GW. For a quick fix, and some very nice graphics it's good. For anything else, get a real game.
Personally I'd rather play Dungeon Siege II ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Think of GW as Unreal Tournament but with a fantasy flavour. Erm, that should summarise it.
It is basically Diablo 2 - 3D Edition or WoW - Fast Paced Edition.

Nah, the people who expect that (and all the features, tedium, and grind that come with it) get bored fast. The PvE part is basically a single-player fantasy RPG with the option for multiplayer whenever you want. The PvP part is, as was said earlier, kind of a fantasy RPG version of Unreal Tournament.
It really isn't an MMORPG. The world isn't persistent. There isn't any crafting. There isn't much in the way of uber loot. The really expensive armor is different from standard armor only in looks. The PvP isn't for territorial control or relics or realm abilities.
It's a game designed around being able to start it up and do something within a minute. Grab some henchmen and do a mission or a quest or just kill some monsters. Create a PvP character at level 20 and enter the random arenas. Mess around with different skills, check out the crazy nonsense other people are trying. Not everybody is interested in that, but Guild Wars is superbly designed for it. I think the execution is nearly perfect and I love the game. |

GW is a lot of fun, with a few niggles. Though ANet designed it with many MMORPG pros & cons in mind, it does have some flaws. Having to fight your way through area after area to get from point a to point b can get tedious when all you want is to get there. You just cannot avoid fighting in those situations. But once you've discovered a town, you can instantly travel back there at any time which is great. Another annoyance is when you d/c during a PvE mission or PvP match, you cannot rejoin, but get put back to the mission/arena start point, which can result in lots of wasted time...which you might get anyway, as sometimes you can get to the end of a mission just to die at the last hurdle and have to start over.
Well reading the above is all quite negative, but honestly GW is a very good game. It looks lovely, sounds great, combat is fun and has a great element of strategy sadly missing from many MMOs. As others have said however, it isn't an MMORPG in the strictest sense. While your character is persistent, the world is not. There are servers for Korea, USA and Europe which seperate players (good for time zones) but there are international districts to meet in if you have friends overseas. The PvE and PvP parts are both great and there's lots to do, the devs are always tweaking and bug squishing and there's often new stuff added too. Considering all that and the fact there's no monthly fees, there's no reason not to play and see for yourself, even if you only play it with NPC henchmen as an online, single player RPG.

If u think about leaving eve for GW u will regret is soon. GW seams one of the best games when u first see it...after max 3-4 weeks...u`ll be bored...That game is dependent on a good story...it has one quite good but so very short...u`ll very soon get bored...I haven`t played wow but i saw it and i think is much better...

Guild Wars is fine for a change of pace. It isn't a mmorpg in any way, unless you think the definition of MMORPG is that multiple players can meet each others in town.
Guild wars is more of like Diablo, where the towns act as a hub - a meeting room - for other players. There you can get a group to finish quests and so on, but when you go out into the wilderness, you are on your own with the group you formed.
The game is beautiful graphically and the soundtrack is evocative - which comes to no surprise since Jeremy Soule composed it.
It's a fun game, and the benefits are that you don't have to pay subscription, but it'll never replace a full-fledged mmorpg if you're looking for that kind of game. ------------------------------------- A lonely cowboy who some call Hamill the Mark, |

exactly. i play it once in a while together with a few friends from my corp. it's a great game to play for a few hours a week. think diablo with good graphics and lots of people. and no, it's not really a MMO - more like a regular online RPG.
perfect during unscheduled downtimes or if you just need a day off of eve

It's a pretty good instant action type of game. The fact that if you just want to pvp you can skip the rpg section and make a level 20 (max level) char from the start is a nice addition.
For longetivity and depth it can't compete with eve but for a quicky pick up and play fantasy game with pvp it's pretty good fun.
