I've been giving some thought to what changes would make the most drastic improvements for the game--which things would add a lot of variety to player politics and combat possibilities.
1. Exclusivity for new, superior blueprints. These should be very rare NPC-dropped blueprints that spawn such that only one or two originals exist and only a few copies can be made. This would create price wars with a limited number of participants, which would quite possibly make it economical for one of the competitors to try to hurt the other via a military war. I think this would result in many new corp wars actually fought for economic reasons instead of pride.
2. Pirates in empire space. Not everywhere, but pirates should definitely be allowed back in low security regions of empire space, preferably on a system of admittance more gradual than the previous "0.4 and below is indistinguishable from 0.0, 0.5 and above is indistinguishable from 1.0" system. Right now the risk vs reward balance is gone from commodity trading--people can make millions upon millions while semi-AFK trading robotics without a worry in the world. And there's no excitement to the long trips through empire space anymore, cause there are no pirates to worry about at all. Also, from a pirate standpoint, being limited to strictly 0.0 space really cuts us off from a lot of important commerce and forces us into fairly predictable locations to find traffic. Even most non-pirates I've talked to seem to agree that the game lost some excitement when the sentry guns were added to 0.1-0.3 space.
3. Player stations. A lot of interesting PVP would follow if players had stationary, attackable, very expensive assets. And a lot of action would start to take place out in currently under-utilized regions out on the edge of the game world. I like the possibilities that station construction would produce for pirates: all the mineral shipments that would be funneled out into deep 0.0 space, the vulnerable construction project itself, and the need for constant guards or total secrecy. Stations would add a lot of depth to player politics. ___________________________________________
