I'm thinking about starting up this year, as i move into univeristy (Edinburgh)
Whats best to start with? Some friends suggested Japonese Sword Art, Kendo or Iaido.
Whats your experience of these?

Good, any martial art is. Dedicated sensei you must seek. Also, dedicated gakusei you must be.
Always remember these, if you must: 1. Akido is the basic form of Kendo. 2. Karate-do is the basic form of all Karate, look for Shoto-kan, Ju-jitsu. 3. There is no such thing as the best martial arts unless you train 15 hours a day, 7 times a week and have a very good teacher ;)

It depends on what you want to do: do you want an emphasis on grappling and groundwork, or throws/takedowns. Or do you want to concentrate on striking, kicking, punching, or both, plus elbows, knees etc. Or a mixture of the 2 areas.
It also depends on whether you want to join a dojo for self defence learning, or simply to keep fit.
Or do you just want to hit people with swords? ---------------------------------------- Space-Slacker |

Akido is Japanese Tai-chi i.e. very soft and gentle, and it only complements Kendo. If you are really into swords movements, do Kendo and Akido together. Sword movements are very simple and limited. Why not try each form of martial arts for like 2-5 sessions and see whether will you like it or not?

Tae Kwon Do Not the pansy International Federation system, but the full contact World version which is the Olympic sport. Combine this with Judo (Popular Martial Arts means that clubs abound) and you have the perfect combination of range (TKD) and up close, (Judo)
Having been spoilt though, and taught by 2 Koreans (TKD came from Korea) one has found that the UK Sport is quite tame and not as technically advanced (exceptions to this blatant whitwash accepted!) Also, finding World Federation TKD clubs in the UK is quite hard, as the majority are into International Fed sport.
TKD kicks are the basis for Kick Boxing. Huge fun, excellent for cardio training, but dont play fight your mates after a night out on the beers as a misplaced axe kick and alcohol combo leads to trip to local A&E
