"Destroyer" is not a fitting name for this class of ship.. I think a better name would be "Destroy'd-er".
I think many agree with me, that its a darn awkward class of ship. Its low hitpoints hardly justify its large sig rad. It's also way too slow for its hp. On first glance the sheer number of gun slots make it look like a juggernaut. But dont forget a painful 25% rate of fire penaity (which effectively negates 1 turret for every 4 you load). I could probably lay down more damage/sec with a skilled incursus. Described as an anti-frigate frigate, there are other classes which perform that job much better. And they are more survivable and useful. Cost effective? Well, if you get any ideas about loading t2 guns you'll find out that it isnt all its *****ed up to be in the economy department. All in all, i've lost more destroyers than any other class.
So why bother flying it if I criticise it so? I think its got charisma *kicks the bucket o bolts. Getting the most out of pieces of c*ap is my hobby. And I have heard some tall destroyer tales. Makes me jealouse.
I've heard that its best role is when flying in company. Say, have 2 destroyers hugging a battleship. Then it works. That way, you have a respectable spread of low calibre fire. If you try to out-orbit one of the destroyers, chances are you will catch fire from the second destroyer when your transverse/radial reaches zero 2 times per orbit. Thats probably its intended habitat.
But does anybody out there use a destroyer for solo pvp hunting? Please tell me if you have wicked set ups and what you've managed to beat. I've always had a soft spot for the cormorant and would love to revisit it sometime for fun. Though, i still think its a lost cause:)
Honk if you love destroyers!

Edited by: Pudoris on 17/08/2005 08:58:15 25% rof penalty did go as +25% rof... or I am just full of *hit :)
But what have I done, well about the only interesting thing I did was take out 2/10 serp, 3/10 serp complex and not v hard.. though I did have that economically not viable setup (amarr destroyer btw) and then I went into an angel 4/10 complex and lets just say that was not a good idea :)
And since I lost that rather expensive cheap ship due to mods... I have not flown one, but I just might again now :) after rekindling that memory.
edit: have no pvp experience of one except to see them blown up...

The only thing destroyers are really useful for are killing tech 1 friggies quickly.
I've actually fought 2 destroyers in my retribution... neither of em lasted long enough to get a second volley off :p
Their role is really good for empire wars when you aren't dealing with veteran players who can fly several races and classes of tech 2 ships.

Minmatar and Caldari are very usefull in combat. I personaly love Trasher and fly it often. It's the best destroyer in game atm imho. The destroyer do exactly what they were ment to do, and I solute CCP for doing this class of ship very good. If you wan't more fly assault frig :P.

p.s. Thrasher is for dmg, and you can use jammer on Caldari one! My corp mate killed a harpy using racial jammers :).

Destroyers work now. Ever since the missle changes they are useful, and they are probably the most bang you can get for your isk.

Eh. Was working defense for a mining orgy (read: mining gang) and I had my destroyer (catalyst) in .6 space. Lets just say that 3 .6 serpico frigates handed my ass to me. Took a godly drone from a corp mate to help me with the third.
Im not entirely sure how to outfit these buggers. Should I mix long range in with short? Focus on one or the other?
My impulse is to spread the ranges of fire out, but then Im screwing myself when the enemy frigates get close. Anyone got a good recomendation?
I honestly like destroyers because its just one more skill to train in order to get a nice larger ship. As opposed to the hoops you have to go through to get your first cruiser + proper outfit.

Thrasher is one of the best small ships out there, the best T1 going. It can absolutely *****T1 frigs, and a corp mate of my has enjoyed raping T2 frigs with his (mounting all T1 mods, JSYK).
I set up a Thrasher to test his outfit with T2 mods and was quite impressed with how solidly the Thrasher holds together, but I have not taken it out yet.
The rof on small Artys is abysmally slow, but having 7 of them makes a Thrasher very, very capable of putting a hurt even on unwary cruisers.
200mm T1 or T2 autocannons rip frigs apart with amazing speed... once you close the gap. A smart inty pilot stays well away from an AC Thrasher.
Cormorant runs a close second with blasters. I have not tested the Gallente destroyer, and absolutely LOATHE the Amarr model.
Life is pain...anyone who says differently is selling something. |

Cormorant...
high = 7x 150mm railgun II's
Mids = 20KM Disrupter, web, 2x sensorbooster II's
Low = MAPC
Will anhilate any tech II frig and most intys. Train destroyers lvl4, then run around with antimatter permantly loaded, a near 2000mm scan res and blast any inty/tech 1 frig stupid enough to get close you you.

Destroyer are definetly not for unexperience players with low skill points. If you're a new player, stick with frigates. For a destroyer to be remotely useful, you need the best fitting skills, eng 5, mech 5, and so on.
I bought a catalyst when I reached 5 mil SP and it's quite a blast. Filling his role perfectly as anti frigate ships.
Since then, and only with the cheapest mods, I've killed one AF with a mate, and solo cruisers and frig spawns in 0.3.
But definetly, not a ship for beginners, you won't be able to fit it right for the job it's made for.
And don't worry, no inty will dare approach you. |

I'm pretty new, with just over 600k sp and I've been flying a Coromant for a week or two. I've been fighting PvE in .4 space with pretty good success. When I see a cruiser with missile boat escorts, I run! I have destroyers at lv4 and I've upgraded to thorium ammo for my railguns. I'm still trying to figure out the best configuration for my ship per my limited skill set, but I like it well enough I'm hoping for tech2 destroyers in the future. Lack of speed is my biggest misgiving, like I said, sometimes I have to run But I'm experimenting on life without the AB and so far so good...
High: 3 150mm 2/scout 1/carbide 3 125mm 1/prototype 2/scout 1 Limos missile launcher Mid: AB, SH booster 1, kinetic and explosive dampners Low: Magnetic Stabilizer

Destroyers are designed to be escort ships, their role is to protect larger ships from tacklers.
When used as solo ship then their usability depends heavily on the fitting and the pilots experience. A Thrasher will wipe out most tech1 frigs and interceptors with ease and even most assault wonŠt stand a chance IF the pilot knows how to fit the destroyer. On the other hand their ability to engage larger ships like cruisers is very limited, they are simply not designed to do that.
Destroyers are (like battlecruisers) ships that are very often used by unexperienced players, which usually fail to use them effectively. Thats why so many people think their not worth their money.
