would go for a 6800 gt/ultra and upgrade the cpu to a max speed you can put into your motherboard.

Originally by: FalloutBoy your best bet is to get a 7800 if you want high end, or wait a mounth or 2 for the new nextgen midrange cards to hit the market. a 9800 is no slouch anyway and should last you anyway till the end of the year. no point in spending money for a x800xt or a 6800U now when in a mounth they'll be cheaper and you can get a much faster part for the same price
I had a budget to think of...........and there's no point going for anything with higher spec since the rest of my PC would only bottleneck it.
which makes my point that your prolly best staying with what you got. since the x800xl will only be a marginal up in performance, you need to go to the 6800 series before you can get a significant booste and if you already have marginal hardware for the rest of your system you'll be cpu bound at that point anyway.
Most reviews state it doubles performance over a 9800 in HL2 and BF2.....
Yes, the x800XL does a lot more than a "marginal" boost. Even the 6800NU has a relatively large boost from the 9800, and the x800XL is almost as fast as the 6800GT, which is 50-60% faster than the 6800NU!
Result: Its faster. -- Proud member of the [23].

Why not wait till Xmas and get a Xbox 360, and hax it into your comp. Word is the vidcard in it is going to better than anything you could ever think of putting in a pc. I still have a 5700 ultra with 128ddrx2,AMD xp 3000, 1 gig ddr 3200 dual channel, and I get same fps on the FEAR demo as my cousin, who has amd 64 with 6800.
