I'm thinking of finally upgrading my good old ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB version) which I've had for about 18 months now.
I've totally lost track of what's hot and what's not in terms of video cards so I'm looking for some advice.
It'll have to be AGP 8x and worth the investment in terms of performance increase over my current card. I don' really want to spend more than ú200 on it either.

if it were me, maybe something like this or the ati version - bit more expensive
speaking of which I need to upgrade my graphics card, still have a lousy GFX 5600

I have x800XL 256mb and I love it :D
If you can wait ATI should be bring our its next generation in about sept/oct. And it will kick ass!

I bought a Sapphire Radeon x800XL 512meg 
but a mate bought the x850something that cost about the same and gets better results with that on most games. but on other games the extra 256megs of ram are nice

I'm intrigued - what game actually uses 512mb effectively? I read somewhere there were issues with how quick the extra memory could be accessed. I could be wrong though

turbo, huh? is that the turbo like on my 486 that just made the fans go faster and the HDD louder? that was awsome.
Try to look unimportant, they may be low on ammo. |

6800GT and x800XL are cheap, solid cards. There's no real competition for them at that price range.

Yeah and anything faster would only be limited by my PC3200 dual channel DDR RAM and AthlonXP 3200...........
I'll be upgrading to a completely new PC in 6 months but I needed a new video card for BF2

Dual 6800GTs 256mb on a gigabyte SLI board with an AMD 4000+ 64 & 1gb of 3200 ram gives me pretty good performance for most stuff - would a dual-core give anything better for gaming or is that mainly for apps?
I heard the 6800 Ultras had a few probs?

Dual 6800GTs = overkill.
No, the 6800 Ultras have no problems except for the ridiculous price.
A dual core would be quite useful if you run two EVE clients.

Saturday delivery didn't work out - they're delivering on Tuesday :/
Got a refund for the delivery cost though.
Just bought an extra 512MB of RAM too which will take me upto 1.5GB....

your best bet is to get a 7800 if you want high end, or wait a mounth or 2 for the new nextgen midrange cards to hit the market. a 9800 is no slouch anyway and should last you anyway till the end of the year. no point in spending money for a x800xt or a 6800U now when in a mounth they'll be cheaper and you can get a much faster part for the same price

which makes my point that your prolly best staying with what you got. since the x800xl will only be a marginal up in performance, you need to go to the 6800 series before you can get a significant booste and if you already have marginal hardware for the rest of your system you'll be cpu bound at that point anyway.
Most reviews state it doubles performance over a 9800 in HL2 and BF2.....
