I forget exactly how I stumbled upon EVE... might've been a link on another forum I frequent. It was back when it was in development, though, and I followed it for a while before I forgot about it.
I was also around when they were recruiting for Beta players, but I didn't have a good enough computer back then...
Forgot about the game again, until July 2004, when I was finally able to play it. First impression: wow... overwhelming. Like Freelancer except a whole lot bigger. I loved the game at first. It was just so huge and expansive. There was so much room for... everything in the game. So much hope and potential. I was a newb then, thought that 100K ISK was a HUGE sum of money... joined a player corp, helped out a bit with mining ops, etc... then it got a little repetitive.
Got a little bored with the game after a while. All I really did was mine to make money. My interest lagged, until I decided to drop by the forums... Then I saw the alliance map, and the political drama that was the player run empires of the game. And then I really realized why this game was amazing. Haven't looked back since. Well... maybe twice, both times, again, because of mining. But no longer!
So... the question is, how did you hear about EVE and why you play it now?

I actually heard about it while while playing EnB. I signed up twice and ended up with 2 beta accounts, however my on-board vid card couldn't run it so I didn't get to play. After EnB sunset, I went out and bough FF XI, it needed a better card so I bought one. I played FF XI for about 2 days before I canceled my account. Had a new card so I gave Eve a shot and here I am still.

Haha, that's almost exactly how it happened for me too. Bought FFXI first, had to upgrade my computer... results: FFXI no longer here; still playing EVE.

Through a friend. I was playing DAoC and it was Beta season. A friend of mine through DAoC named Hazie, referred me to this amazing game. I signed up for beta, sure enough, I get access during the last weeks of it. We mine like rabbits and produce our first ruptures, etc etc. I fell in love with the game instantly. Quit after 1st month because everyone I knew disbanded, left to DAoC + FFXI after that. Gave those up and i'm here full time now, even more addicted.

I used to play Earth and Beyond until they announced they were closing it down. I was Spathi on Andromeda, L150 TE Admiral :D I had heard about EVE but didnt sign up until EnB was gonna be shut down. I do sometimes wish there were some aspects of EnB added to EVE and I definitely miss killing Voltoi in Antares and fishing in Cooper.

Came accross a page which discussed free MMOG. I'm guessing this thread was made when eve was in its beta, as many people said they player eve, and it was free.
I found the website, and though it wasn't free, I thought I would try it out in the near future anyways. I managed to find an old box at the store for about 1/2 the subscription costs, and have been here ever since.

I originally heard about EvE from a friend, back when it was still in development (late 2002?).
I heard from the Beta that the game was kind of boring, someone said all you could do was mine, so I didnt bother with it come release.
However, back in April last year, hugi.is offered it's members a free 14 day trial.. two of my friends tried it out, so I figured, what the heck, why not.
Almost a year and a half later, I'm still here, and playing as much as I ever did.
So much for eve being boring.

saw a small article about eve on pc.ign.com when the development had barely begun.. saw the picture of three executioners that turned out to be a screenshot and not a render.. was blown away by graphics and mature level of the game..
signed up for alpha, got accepted to EnB beta instead.. played that for a bit and met someone there who got into eve alpha but didnt have time to play..
he gave me his account (lester).. played on that since medusa phase and used my own beta acceptance account after phase 4 (lol had twenty by then due to mass signups) longest time ive been without eve consecutively since then was a month and a half after retail started.. was way too buggy to play, and i was focusing more on school exams at the time _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning.

I heard about Eve while playing an online text based game called Earth: 2025. Was in a big alliance of something like 200 people and one of the bigger names (not the biggest, but a well known guy) announced he was going to be retiring to spend time playing Eve (this was just about the time of Eve release I beleive). I thought it looked cool but I couldn't afford to pay the subscription, so I forgot about it. Then right before I went to Argentina I was looking for a new diversion, and I happend upon a free trial for Eve. Well, I started with the intention of only playing the two weeks, and a really awesome little noob mining corp hooked me in, and eventually provided the path to where I am in Eve today, still giving these guys my money every month. ----------------------------------

seen it on a shelf in US, in a box, when i was playing EnB, was looking for something that had more depth then EnB, bought it, didnt like the complexity, nor the seemingly emptyness after the Tut missions, but returned a couple months later to give it another try, and have been here little over 1.5 yrs, cant see anything on the horizon, that will take its place ----------------------------------------------- In the End , there can be only 1

There was an article on Slashdot about a guy who pulled off a big battleship BPO scam, read that and spoke to a RL gaming mate at work about Eve. As I was addicted to Elite and Eve seemed all that and more then I just had to get it. Got a bit bored midway through being in an empire 'bear corp, so I moved out of that corp and am now enjoying being in a 0.0 based alliance with a mix of NPC hunting (True Sansha spawns 4tw) and PVP.
I think there are two stages to the game in Eve, the empire way of life and then you go out into 0.0 and the world of alliances and that is when the real game kicks in as there is quite frankly nothing like it.

I was playing Homeworld 2...Realised even though it was fun it wasnt exactly what I wanted. Picked up Pc Gamer and was reading through it....realised EvE was on the demo disc. I thought 'Hmmm might as well give it a go' thinking that id give it a week or so and probably move on like i usually do. How wrong could I be!
Joined a corp within a month and never looked back...lets hope its around for a long time as I cant ever see it being beaten for many yrs to come.
People come and go and there will always be someone unhappy about something but in my book its the only game YOU can choose what you do and how you do it. It can be as challenging or as easy as YOU want it to be. No one says you have to do this or that.
If the changes that are implemented dont suit you...try something else. That way you discover different aspects of the game you might never have tried before.

I was playing freelancer just after it came out. I liked the game but there was alot of features that i wished was in it. What do you do when you want to express such feelings...go to the website and ***** ofc. I got to the freelancer forums and sure enough top of the page a 18 page thread with a title along the lines of "Things you wish were in freelancer". Page one concisted of the usual moaning and whining but about half way down page two there was a link "CLICK ME your prayers are answered" it said. The rest of the page and the following 16 pages consisted of "OMG" "holy crap" "I NEED that game" "when is it out?". Ever curious I clicked the link to find out what all the fuss was about. It lead to the eve beta site...
Suffice to say I signed up right away. Decided that my 56K modem wasnt going to be able to play this fantastic game so moved from the mountains of scotland to family in london just to get a better connection. The day i got cable my beta app came through.. \o/
Rest is history :)

I heard about it from another game I played while EVE was in Beta called Subspace, someone on there pointed me to this little gem and I signed up for the beta right away. Joined my first corp called Merchants Alliance with Dark Matter as CEO and was hooked from then on =P There's just no other game out there like EVE, and this game is everything I wanted in an MMORPG (well, except for a more involving storyline but that's for another thread).

Well long after my Amiga had been stashed away in the attic, I discovered EVE Online, which after some research turned out to be influenced by the two games I mentioned above, I fell in love straight away.

I read the PC Gamer UK article on EVE and WoW and thought it brought up a lot of good points on a MMORPG game. In WoW, what are my accomplishments? Nothing but hitting lvl 60 and going to the next high level area to treadmill some more. But in EVE, instead of epic armor sets, there's epic stories. I love the idea of a world of almost absolute freedom, where I can be who I want to be and the world takes notice.
And then I read the article about the Guiding Hand Social Club and Ubiqua Seraph and I was just in awe. This can't happen in any other MMORPG because they don't have the same freedoms as EVE has. I didn't join this game to exploit bad behavior, but the possibility that stories such as this can exist is simply a blessing. The realization of the fact that EVE is a real Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game brought me to the vast universe of EVE.

I came to Eve way before it went into beta. Back then I was playing Mankind, which was basically the first space based MMOG.
Mankind was great but after some time it just went down the drain because of the developers not doing what was necessary and the technical nature of the game, which made cheating all too easy.
So when I quit Mankind I searched for a new space based game to keep me entertained (I always loved games revolving around space... dunny why really) and that's when I stumbled across the Eve website. A few looks at the first screenies then woke my interest and after reading a bit more I basically got hooked, started whoring the forums and stayed here eversince.
Of course I applied for beta, got in at phase 3 and started my retail account shortly after release.
What's keeping me hooked to the game? Well, I guess it's just the complexity of the game and the nice community around it. Eve is basically the only game I play nowadays because evrything else just doesn't suit me anymore.
It's just cool.

Heard about EVE when I was beta testing EnB. Was totally into EnB, and swore I'd never ever play EVE. I even remember going onto the EVE beta forums back then and flaming some EnB-haters
But, then EnB came out, and I realized that, oops, I'd already gotten a JW to lvl 150, and a PE to 132, and already killed just about everything killable, and didn't want to wait months for a new patch. Brought my new PE up to lvl 50 and then quit.
Played PlanetSide for a while, but really needed an MMO to play occasionally (sometimes you feel like just playing a relaxing game). I tried SWG and it just sucked. Then my bro checked back up on EVE and reminded me about it. I'd just broken up with my girlfriend of just over a year and needed something to sorta bury myself in, and the rest is history. February somethingorother 2004 I started playing.

Was browsing the internet and somehow discoverd the Eve-Online website. This was before the betas had even started i think. Looked at some screens and i fell in love. This was the MMORPG i wanted to play. After a while i kinda forgot all about Eve, and somewhere in the middle of 2003 i signed up for my first MMORPG ever. I was SO exited when i got my box, and just drooled as i installed it, reading the manual and the things on the box. Made my first char, so impressed by the charmaking-thingy, and when i was first launched into space... i almost fainted. Did the very short tutorial there was those days, and i was all in the game.
I regret that ive had so many pauses. First i played a couple of months, then quit. Started again in 2004, dragging Xoria Krint in to the game (he will probaly thank me for life for showing him how great this game is :D) and we played alot. But then again after a few months I had another paus cause I was moving to another vity (studies). And somewhere in 2005 i went back to Eve (damn, its like a drug, cant just quit :P) and now i have promised myself that i should not take anohter paus! Atleast keep on training.

Was playing Starcraft like a ***** addict for 7 years. Never found anything that could keep my attention for a few days. A friend told me about this game and when I looked at it and he got thru explaining the basics (4 hours later) I thought damn too complicated. A month or two later I noticed he was more interested in the game than a 14 yr old is looking at their first boob, I decided to give it a shot. Going from Starcraft (I was one of the top ranked players and part of ~Die clan) to Eve was a HUGE change. Impressed by the graphics, overwhelmed by the things you had to learn and remember it became a challenge I had to meet. I'm still trying to figure it out.
The retail box was being sold in the U.S. at this time in very few stores (Fry's Electronics only place at the time in San Diego, at least I checked all the areas I usually look for games). Now it can't be found except online.
I stay for the ever dangling carrots of skils and content. The game has so much pontential and cannot truly be compared to any other game out there. ___________________________

discovering ccp`s website, my eye fell on a title named "eve-online" and decided to have a look after reading the faq i though "omg i need to have this ****!!!" and saw the date of release
with not much hope i decided to file for beta and perhaps 2 months later, on a cloudy cold morning i saw what many would have dreamt to see... an invitation to join beta!
checking the site and getting the client asap i found myself right in alpha
stuck till now, all cause of the giant bat flying over iceland _____________________________________________________ Proud ex-owner of Tenashi&Kirushi, gl new owners |

I have abolutely no recollection of what made me start Eve tbh.
Can't have read cause i dont read game mags. Prolly not seen any commercials since there arent any, or werent back then.
So, no clue. Fact is, i'm playing for two years plus now and made more then 5K posts on these forums according to some dude that says he can see my postcount.
So something must have tipped me off :/

Came into EnB about 5 months before sunset. Long enough to get really into it, just barely getting tired of it. I intended to play to the end, but the servers emptied after the announcement... in the next two days, after a period of anger, frustration and sorrow, the three servers had each dropped from their average 30% full to 5%. The difference was incredibly noticable. The only way to describe it to an EVE player is that its like flying from Pator to Jita and never seeing anyone. The economy in EnB was a barter system, and the skilled crafters were some of the first to leave, crashing that too.
EVE invited us all in for the trial, very nicely too, but I was very, very skeptical. The games, while parallel in concept, were 180 degrees different in execution. I spent 20 minutes trying WASD, Arrows and mouse trying to maneuver my ship before I realized I just couldn't. I gave the game 30 minutes and then uninstalled it.
A year later I got EnB out of my system, tried it again. I had tried a few more MMOs in the meantime and realized the excitement of EVE wasn't in the arcade-style piloting, but in actually progressing in new and exciting ways. Been here for almost 6 months now.
I sometimes miss true ninja-mining in a JE, mine and cloak, mine and cloak, mine and run, but not as much. Now I've got a Dominix. :) ------ I generally assume the following: 1. 95% of Empire Carebears don't get 0.0 PVPers. 2. 95% of 0.0 PVPers don't get Empire Carebears. 3. 100% of Ore Thieves steal just to upset the Miners. |

I was playing Freelancer Multiplayer and this dude talks about leaving the game and going to play EVE, he said a few things like playing some cash evry month n stuff. a few days later i googled about it. Found this EVE and read a lot of reviews and saw screenshots. But i couldnt afford to buy game so i forgot about it... later near Xmas, same year, i checked eve online again and saw that i could download the game and pay only 25$, how cool! Safer and cheaper than mailing the box from the UK! So i bought the game and a few days later my cousin did as well.
PLayed for 4 months with a character called Ahlaia, deleted it, and been playing with Dred since then 1.5years of eve already!

I got an eve mail saying to come back and try the game lol says I tried it in beta, now strehcing my mind back I think I did sign up for the beta but it would'nt run on my computer so I forgot all about it, but anyway joined and the rest is history, also because of the mail you'll find a higer than normal players in my age range as many were real beta testers that came back at that time.

Another MMORPG game, Darkspace, had just been revised and players were comparing it to Eve because of all the mining they were doing to earn money for their ships so I decided to check Eve out. On another note concerning the defunct Earth and Beyond and Eve. Eve is eeriely similiar at first glance but it is everything EnB should have been imo, but without the lag, lack of PvP and the annoying 'Tada' O'!

i never heard of eve, and still have never seen an ad for the game;) during first week of american release i caught a friend playing this at his computer at work. i was going to ask him an important tech question but... "omg what the heck is that?" he showed my how the ships fly around, then he opened the map... thousands and thousands of starsystems... omgomgomg. had 2 accounts the next day;) tried a couple other mmorpg's since then but cancelled them. nothing beats the single-universe, player controlled/effected dynamic universe that eve has. over 2 years later and still love it.

After playing shoot em up games and strategic stuff for years i did a search for space and simulation. I mean with all this new technology there has to be some sort of space simulator around right?
This happened last day in Beta. I played Beta for 2 hours before it shut down(or something). I then had to wait untill it was sold in the Netherlands and i drove 60km to a shop for it. Once i was connected i played 3 days got 5 mill isk made and then got rolledback. So everything i had dissapeared as i didn't excist pre-rollback-date.
But since then i've come a long way. Raindrop

Had an Icelandic friend over and we where enjoying our memories of the old commodore 64 days playing Elite, when he told me some buddies of his in Iceland where working on and Elite MK II. He send me the link to their website. All text at the time with some small vids of I believe it was a Vexor flying around.
I was stunned by the beauty of the graphics and the storylines presented. Followed the webby for a while, and then when my comp allowed I entered for Beta, got accepted and haven't left the game since apart from some rl vacation times.

i heard about eve about 6 motnths (from my nephew) before i started playing i was beta testing another game and when beta was over i decided after 3 years of playing that game i needed a change.
I came to eve for a break from playing the other MMORPG ( which shall remain nameless) and like it so much i decided to stay.
I am now addicted to it i think it is the best understated game on the market at this time.

Pc Gamer issue 152 and the Guiding Hand Social Club are what made me want to join. The fact that you could actually do something like that, and still be within the rules of the game showed how free form Eve is. It was a must have. I got it a month ago and never looked back.
I had to switch from a trial account to a full account as I bought the CD version, and the staff moved it with no problems. Everyone has been helpful in every way. Be it the rookie channel in game, or on the forums, I raise a glass to the gamers and staff. You are an example to MMO games everywhere. Originally by: Krulla I originally heard about EvE from a friend, back when it was still in development (late 2002?).
So much for eve being boring.
that one got alot of icelandic players, including me \o/ (they should do the trial thingie again on hugi.is)

I always liked Sci-Fi and wished it could be an online game, but I read the review from game spot and others and thought they could not be wrong by that much and so did not play until now.
I finally took it upon my self to try EVE and it was none of the bad things game spot said at all.
An awesome game. From now on I will always test things out for my self and take reviews with a grain of salt. Also the 14 day free trail with out asking for a credit card helped the issue.

I first heard about Eve when it was in late Beta stages. A friend of mine and I were huge fans of Microsoft's Freelancer. I said, someone should make an MMORPG in space. He said, They did! Few months later I bought an account, played for 7 months, then had to quit because of money issues and being laid off. Now Ive been back for 5 months on a whole new character, and loving every minute.

I played E&B from Beta until they turned it off. Bunch my guild mates were going to Eve and another bunch to Star Wars. I enjoy the spaceship aspect of these games so I decided to play Eve. It's been 19 months now. I have two accounts and enjoy the game. I still do miss much of E&B like walking and dancing in the space stations, the disco, and the shops, flying down on the planets and kill weird monsters and being killed.
Eve has some great stuff going for it but still I long for some of the stuff E&B had Eve could actully take some pointers from it.

Friend in another game (non-pay to play MORPG for which I deved) told me about free 30 day trial, and free download, without requiring credit card. So I figured hell, if they aren't even going to ask for a CC number, I might as well try it, nothing to lose, they aren't trying to TRICK me into forgetting to cancel like so many other lame schemes do, and they weren't making me PAY for a game and THEN ALSO PAY for monthly fee like many other lame schemes do. So I tried it, and I liked it, and I have been playing ever since.

Back in the day I signd up to a bunch of free betas.. free games, yay.
Anyways, CCP sent me an e-mail to join. I played for a while, lost my ship and well.. I was impressed with the game but it all seemed a bit harsh. I had a million other games to play anyways and had built up quite a character in earth and beyond.
Fast forward a year and I'm bored out of my mind, nothing to do. I get an E-Mail from CCP again saying "All old beta testers get 20 free days!" I thought "what the hell, I remember the music being good" and signed up.. The game still had lots of problems at the time but generally, it was pretty fun. Since then CCP has impressed me time and time again with their constant and undivided attention towards their game and what they want it to be, every time I think it's getting old they come out with something to make it alive again. I've taken a good number of breaks since I started playing again a year and a half ago but I've not uninstalled the game once. ________

Very cool btw Error. How they still treat ya and so on. Why I still play to be honest.
I was browsing on mmorpg.com and saw the screenshots and got hooked a year or so ago. Looked very cool and it was free to download/try. So why not? I played a lot of other PvP games like DAOC ect. Switched from there sucky balancing attempts to play Eve were it seems people think.
Unfortuanly I'm pretty bored. I pirate and I try to PvP when I can. It's just not as intresting when you're solo I guess. But I don't think I will leave or un-install eve. The community here is too good to just leave. Never have I once talked to a GM or Dev of any other MMORPG till I came here.
