Where does that leave the EVE community?
I mean this guy was taking it to an extreme but his argument was that he was simply fantasizing about his online activities. And the evidence to convict him was partly to do with his google searches.
But what does that entail for online groups who routinely fantasize and roleplay often time very immoral and illegal acts.
Considering the things said in local during "good fights" are borderline on the aforementioned behavior what does this mean to people who like to fantasize and participate in virtual crime.
If someone says "I want to kill you!" in game can that now mean that what you were fantasizing about killing them is now therefore punishable by real jail time.
I know sometimes I do troll on occasion and I don't really agree with what the guy did (he was off in the deep end and the fact he used his position to do illegal searches on persons should be punished), but it really distrubs me that you could be, in theory, thrown in jail because you were fantasizing virtual murder.
Does this mean that you can no longer engage in roleplaying activities that border on the darker side of the internet? That you now have to watch your words to what you say to people in local for fear of jail time?
Can you no longer say "I enjoy killing people in an online game". Is this where the verdict leads us? "Entitlement" is a euphemism for "I hate the way you play and it makes me cry like a baby". If you fantasize about being immoral it means you enjoy being immoral deep down. |

Not sure exactly how this affects the price of Dairy Products in the EVE universe.
The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the ho's and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' and I'll look down, and whisper 'no.' |

You read too much into it . If I was to say "Im a gonna kill you" in the games chat that is no biggie... that is normal when people are shooting their internet spaceships gunz at your ship or pod. However saying that and then using work resources to find you and hunt you down and call you and have tons of emails of how.... that is different. In fact I believe it is against the eula to make rl threats... then again i have yet to get mad at tha pixels.
Oh andmifnyou actually read it... he wasnt fantasizing about o line activities... just fantasizing. |

Had to Google wtf you were talking about, found this:
Quote:One day last summer, New York City police officer and accused cannibal-sex plotter Gilberto Valle typed this phrase into Google: sound you make with the knife before carving.
"That is not normal," assistant U.S. attorney Randall Jackson tells a packed courtroom Thursday...
Maybe it's the lack of context, but that isn't really a google query that sends chills down my spine or really strikes me as particularly twisted.
In a vacuum, that could be something as benign as a search for a descriptive word for that particular sound. |

As someone who works close to federal and state law enforcement, I can only begin to try to explain how much of an egregious violation his use of NCIC is when it relates to "fantasy." If not for the entirely illegal use of NCIC, he might have had a defensive claim. His fantasy was akin to me saying I'm going to come to your house and kill you, and then posting your home address. Having complete access to your records is a huge violation of privacy by a government agent who is talking online about how he plans to murder you. 315 4 CSM 8 |

The whole thing is a circus, like most court cases, but especially ones under the media eye.
Sad thing is, the guy will never get any real help in a system designed to exploit and punish. ~ Professional Forum Alt -á~ |

Happened in america, doesn't apply to me. Apparently booking your flight & accomodation to Iceland BEFORE you buy the tickets for the convention which is pretty much the only reason you wanted to go there in the first place is popular. |

Everyone needs to understand his use of NCIC wasn't using Google. He was using a federal database to research real people. 315 4 CSM 8 |

Hi,
I'm sorry but this topic isn't suitable for EVE General discussion and it borders on political discussion and topics that might not be considered to be teen friendly.
As such, I'm locking this thread. ISD Suvetar Captain Community Communication Liaisons (CCLs) Interstellar Services Department |
