Think I have a lot to say on this topic. I am relatively new player to EVE and the genre in general. less than a week. The Glallente rookie ship looks fine and acceptable to me, but my next ship was the Gallente Tristan. Oh well, I cant describe the disgust I felt! it looks like poorly designed robot! not the slightest similiarity to starship!!!
I am usually of those ppl who say "Functionality and efficiency is more important than look", but in this case, I really am considering not to buy subscription, and I still ohpe the higher class ships will look more appealing to me. I think u discharge this aspect to easily, its important aspect since I most of the time focused on it, and lol I want it to look fine, and not make me feel sick and loose appetite. seriously!
To give a great example would be from all Star Trek series: The starships are much better looking, look real and reliable. each race such as Federation, Klingons, Romulans have distinctive design, unified more or less for all classes. This isnt the case here in EVE, and I serioulsy hope the devs decide not to ignore this issue and invest some developing time on this topic.
About what was said that some might not like the new looks -the solution is very simple really: You allow the players to select the model and look of each ship. there would be of course few themes predefined: Default, Classic, Custom and few more perhaps :) then it will solve all arguments, and everyone will use the model he prefers to see for hours on his screen :) how does this sound? Perhaps even would be good idea to allow people make custom models?
BTW, right now I am on Gallente Destroyer Catalyst, and it still looks terrible!! for oen thing, the focus isnt on the ship's center! it forces me to zom out each time I leave starbase, and this is seriously annoying, because if I turn the camera on default zoom part of the ship is outside my view.. you know what I mean? this only prooves how little they invested into developing the models, otherwise focus point would be the ship's centre. Now about the Catalyst itself: I dont even know where to start, it looks like first draft of old engine wing for Boeing 747! draft which was trashed and collected by one of the designers few years later from garbage canister in some sector :D
Well thast all I have to say which I hope would contribute to solving this very grave problem :)
Any input and responses are welcome :)
