I googled it but most of the fits are pre-patch when they had small cargo holds and didn't answer my question. What are the best Rigs to put in one.
Current fit - High: 2 xSM1 Mid: Named Survey Scanner (forget which, dropped off a rat) Low: 3xMLU1 Rigs: None.
I plan on upgrading to MLU2s this week, should I upgrade to SM2s or stick with the SM1s?
Thanks in advance. |

Well.... given you are fitting out for max mining, you'll probably die to a single catalyst that wants to suicide gank you. If you fit:
[Retriever, Ice] Mining Laser Upgrade II Mining Laser Upgrade II Mining Laser Upgrade II
Survey Scanner II
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal I Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal I
Medium Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Medium Ice Harvester Accelerator I
It might take 2 destroyers to gank you.... potentially making it unprofitable to do so.... but someone might attempt to harvest your tears to make up the difference. The Ice Harvesting Rig is so, if you do switch to ice mining, you would ideally fit a DCU rather than 3x IHU....
Be weary of your surrounds.... in highsec other players still pose a threat to you. Concord does NOT protect you, they only avenge you.... meaning you can die before they show up....

Drones will do nothing to a gank. DC2 is your friend. Steve Ronuken for CSM 8 Handy tools and SDE conversions Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |

Damage drones won't do much to save your ship, but EC drones can be a life saver.... (if you are lucky) |

3x mlu. 2x strips 5x of any light combat drone.
done. Want miners to move from high sec to null sec? Then give them a reason to join player corps, and stop null sec grav sites being worth less isk/hour than high sec asteroid belts. Really isn't difficult. |

You're at the point where you have to start making risk vs reward decisions. The retriever is fairly cheap and gets fairly good yeild, but if you don't build any tank it can get blown up very easily. When you start adding tech 2 mods and rigs to the ship you need to make sure you're not spending your money on something that's going to be blown up easily.
I think the suggest to add 1 em rig, 1 thermal rig, and 1 extender rig is good, but I would definitely add a damage control in place of one of the MLU's. That module will add more survivability than any other module on a retreiver.
Personally, I chose to fly a procurer. It doesn't have the large hold that the retriever does, but it's super cheap (easy to replace) and can be decently tanked with the 4 mid slots it has for very little investment (meta 0 mods do the job and cost pennies). But I can understand why the retriever is attractive with the large ore bay. So try to think about how much risk vs reward you're willing to fly, but if you stick with a retriever I would strongly suggest that you set aside one low slot for a damage control, especially before you add any tech II mods to it. |

With a retriever you need 1 or 2 processor overclocking rigs to fit 3 MLU's especially if you are using T2 strips. this does not leave much for a tank. But leaves you with a great yield, in fact a covetor needs mining barge trained to 4-5 to beat the yield of a retriever with 3 MLU's.
If you go all tank you can fit a shield extender rig, em shield resistance rig, and a thermal shield resistance rig, plus a invulnerability field in the mid, and DC II and 2 reinforced bulkheads in the lows for about 20k ehp.
You can swap the em rig for a second shield extender rig since cataysts only do themal/kenetic damage. If you want a little more yield you can drop one or bothof the reinforced bulkheads for MLU's and still have about 16k ehp.
But really depending on what system you mine in, the extra yield from a max yield fit will only take a few hours to pay for the ship. even if you lose 1 every 5 hours of mining you will still be ahead. retrievers are cheap to replace.
If you really want tank a procurer can get over 60k ehp and still match the yield of a retriever with no MLU's |

You can easily fit 3x MLU2s and 2x T2 strips without a processor overclocking rig if you have half-decent fitting skills. Don't have much room left for tank, though... |

Hope U R posting with an alt because FYI after posting that fit here I wouldn't be surprised if one of James315's followers will run an agent locator on you & gank you once you show up on his watchlist Ripard Teg-á for CSM 8 |

why yes, you will be dying if you fit anti-EM shield modules to guard against a suicide ganking catalyst. |

To be fair, if you leave a 0% EM resist hole you'll meet a gank thrasher instead. Without somewhat balanced stats you're just picking your poison. |
